Wednesday’s national forecast – Low to the east

A southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today with a large low centred to the east of the North Island. Showers for western regions. Eastern regions now looking drier than anticipated a day ago, rain or showers for the lower South Island clears from the north.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Partly cloudy with occasional showers, Bay Of Plenty stays dry. Auckland and Northland may see the odd isolated heavy shower with thunder in the afternoon. Southwesterlies freshen up after midday.
Highs: 14 – 16

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Cloudy areas, a few showers, more so from afternoon. West to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 9 – 15

Eastern North Island

Partly cloudy, a few showers possible along the coastal fringe. Showers a little more likely for Wairarapa later in the evening as southwesterlies freshen.
Highs: 13 – 16

Wellington

Partly cloudy, any early showers clear then later in the evening showers move back in. Southerlies pick up later in the day.
High: 12 – 13

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly sunny with some high cloud, Marlborough may see a few showers this evening. Southwesterly winds.
Highs: 13 – 15

Canterbury

Showers clear from the north this morning and sunny areas break through. Winds are light tending southwest after midday.
Highs: 9 – 13

West Coast

Partly cloudy skies with the odd shower, South Westland is cloudier with showers but these clear from the north, Fiordland has rain for much of today especially in the south. Winds are mostly light, perhaps tending southwest later.
Highs: 12 – 15

Southland & Otago
Rain eases to showers this morning, clearing this afternoon but remaining mostly cloudy. Showers ease for Southland, pushing back in a little more later this evening. Winds are mostly light.
Highs: 8 – 12
