Wednesday’s national forecast

A front moves northwards over the South Island today reaching the lower North Island this evening, northwesterlies ahead of the front then changing southwest.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

A mix of sun and cloud, sun more likely in the afternoon. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 24-29

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle from afternoon, breezy west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 20-22

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud although some sun breaking through at times, the odd spot of rain spreads into the Wairarapa from afternoon (clearing evening) then perhaps further north overnight. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 28-30

Wellington

Cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle developing in the morning, clearing later in the evening. Strong northwesterly winds gusting to gale at times.
High: 19

Marlborough & Nelson

Thick high cloud, a few spots of rain in the afternoon / early evening (especially about Nelson) otherwise mainly dry. Brisk to strong northwesterly winds.
Highs: 22-26

Canterbury

Any morning showers clearing, afternoon sunny spells break through. Southerlies tend easterly in the evening.
Highs: 18-20

West Coast

Heavy morning rain eases to showers around midday which clear in the afternoon, breezy northerlies change southwest.
Highs: 19-22

Southland & Otago

Sunny spells about Southland, westerlies becoming brisk to strong in the afternoon with the chance of a shower or two. Otago sees any early showers clear, dry for a time with some sun then an isolated shower or two is possible again in the afternoon and early evening.
Highs: 16-23
