Thursday’s national forecast

Our tropical low passes out to the east of the country today and in behind it is a southwesterly airflow, which will be fairly gusty over the North Island then easing this evening. A front moves of the lower South Island this afternoon and delivers showers to Southland and perhaps coastal Otago.

Auckland & Northland
Early showers clear then expect sunny spells with gusty west to southwest winds. Winds will be strong about Auckland. Winds ease for all in the evening.
Highs: 16-17

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Early showers clear then expect sunny spells with brisk west to southwest winds, easing later in the evening.
Highs: 15-18

Eastern North Island
Early showers clear then sunny spells increase with skies becoming mostly clear by evening. Breezy southwesterly winds, easing in the evening.
High: 18

Western North Island
Morning showers clear then expect a mix of sunny spells and some cloud with westerly breezes. Winds about northern Taranaki will be brisk and gusty.
Highs: 15-16

Wellington
Morning cloud clears to mostly sunny weather by midday, strong southerly winds ease dying out in the evening.
Highs: 14-15

Nelson
Becoming sunny in the morning, west to southwest winds.
Highs: 17-18

Marlborough
Any early showers clear then becoming mostly sunny, light winds may tend east to northeast in the afternoon.
Highs: 17-18

Canterbury
Any early showers clear then sunny areas increase, becoming mostly sunny by midday. Southwesterly breezes ease dying out later in the evening.
Highs: 16-17

West Coast
Showers move into Fiordland this morning then further north in the afternoon. Expect mostly sunny weather before this front moves through with southwesterly breezes which die out in the evening.
High: 16

Coastal Otago
Mostly sunny with light southwesterlies, winds freshening up a little in the afternoon with a few showers then dying out at night.
Highs: 14-15

Central Otago
Mostly sunny with light westerly breezes tending a little more southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 16-18

Southland
Sunny at first with light northerlies, winds change southwest around midday bringing a few showers which then clear evening. Southwesterlies die out in the evening too.
High: 15
