Thursday’s national forecast

A ridge lies over the North Island today meanwhile a weakening front pushes northwards over the South Island bringing in a southwest change.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy areas, sunny spells at times. There may be a brief shower or two also mainly about exposed eastern spots like Coromandel, Great Barrier Island, northern Auckland and eastern Northland etc. Easterly winds.
Highs: 15-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Sunny areas and some high cloud, light northeasterlies.
Highs: 14-17

Eastern North Island

Mid level cloud north of about Napier, a shower or two for East Cape just north of Gisborne. Napier southwards expect sunny areas and high cloud. Light east to northeasterly winds.
Highs: 16-18

Wellington

Plenty of high cloud with breezy northerly winds.
Highs: 16-17

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny areas and some high cloud, north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-19

Canterbury

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, a few late evening / overnight brief showers as northerlies change southwest.
Highs: 18-20

West Coast

Showers, turning to rain about South Westland in the morning then this rain moves northwards into North Westland by evening. Rain may be heavy but it will ease as it pushes northwards along the coast. Northeasterlies change southwest overnight.
Highs: 13-15

Southland & Otago
High cloud, showers develop in the afternoon as northerlies change westerly. Showers may not reach coastal Otago till evening. Skies dry by night time.
Highs: 14-16
