Thursday’s national forecast

Upper North Island

Cloudy with a few showers, rain moves into Northland this morning then pushing southwards reaching Auckland, Waikato and the Bay Of Plenty this afternoon. Rain will be heavy especially in eastern areas. Northeasterly winds strengthen rising to gale at times in the east then changing strong to gale northwest overnight. Conditions quite humid with temperatures in the low to mid twenties.

Lower North Island

Cloudy with the odd shower, turning to rain during the afternoon and evening as a big front sweeps down from the north. Rain may be heavy, especially about the likes of Taranaki. Showers may be heavy for a time pre the front due to potential thunderstorm activity about inland hills and ranges. East to Northeasterly winds strengthen in the evening, coastal gales may develop especially along eastern coastal fringes and Taranaki. Afternoon temperatures in the low to mid twenties.

Upper South Island

Morning cloud breaks to sunny areas and thickening high cloud, isolated showers develop about inland hills and ranges during the afternoon, some may become heavy with thunderstorms then easing in the evening. Later in the evening and overnight rain moves onto the top of the South Island then later in the night or towards dawn on Friday for Canterbury, this rain will be heavy. Winds generally light for most then easterlies strengthen in the evening / overnight about Nelson and Marlborough, gales likely for the Sounds and about Farewell Spit. Temperatures in the low to mid twenties for most this afternoon, perhaps high twenties for some inland isolated areas.

Lower South Island

Morning cloud breaks to sunny spells, cloud builds in the afternoon for inland areas with heavy showers and thunderstorms developing for some then easing later this evening. Winds light for most, tending onshore this afternoon. Temperatures in the low to mid twenties.
