Thursday’s national forecast

A westerly airflow lies over New Zealand today, a weak front straddles the upper North Island while another fairly weak front moves onto the lower South Island in the afternoon.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Mostly cloudy with a shower or two then drying out in the afternoon with some sun breaking through. Areas of rain move in again overnight from the west. Northland sees cloudy areas and occasional sun with westerly winds.
Highs: 18-21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Showers, clearing around midday for most then some sun breaks through. Overnight some further rain pushes in again from the west. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 14-17

Eastern North Island
Morning showers for the Wairarapa with a southwest change then clearing away. Southwesterlies push into Hawkes Bay and Gisborne in the afternoon however looking mainly dry with some cloud. Sunny areas and some high cloud before the southwest change moves through.
Highs: 18-20

Wellington
Early showers clear then becoming mostly sunny, light southerlies tend northerly around midday.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning cloud with the chance of a shower, becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon. Light winds tending onshore in the afternoon.
Highs: 17-19

Canterbury
Any early showers clear then some sunny spells increase, east to northeasterly winds. Chance of an isolated heavy shower about South Canterbury in the evening then breaking away at night.
Highs: 14-16

West Coast
A mix of sun and cloud with any early showers about Buller clearing away, southwesterly winds. A few patchy showers about Fiordland.
Highs: 14-17

Southland & Otago
Dry first thing about Southland then around midday a southwest change moves in bringing a few showers which then clear late afternoon. Otago is mostly sunny, chance of a shower late afternoon / evening as light winds tend southwest.
Highs: 13-18
