Thursday’s national forecast

A front pushes northwards over the South Island today reaching the lower North Island later this evening / overnight. Some instability for parts of the upper North Island ahead of the front and the lower South Island in the east behind the front.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Sunny spells with a few isolated showers, mainly in the afternoon. Showers possibly heavy with thunderstorms then easing evening. Northerly winds.
Highs: 22-25

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Sunny spells and increasing cloud, the odd shower possible. Rain develops later in the evening, breezy west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 20-25

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with some high cloud developing later in the day, spots of rain spread into the Wairarapa in the evening then further north overnight. Breezy north to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 26-30

Wellington

Becoming mostly cloudy in the morning, some rain develops late afternoon or evening then clears overnight. Strong to gale northwesterly winds.
High: 20

Marlborough & Nelson

Mostly cloudy, some rain develops about Nelson late morning and Marlborough in the afternoon. Clearing overnight as gusty northwesterlies change westerly.
Highs: 19-22

Canterbury

Thick high cloud with a few spots of rain, some sun for a time after high cloud breaks away in the afternoon then late afternoon or evening coastal showers possibly heavy moving into South Canterbury first then North Canterbury later or overnight. Northerlies ease tending southerly in the afternoon.
High: 24

West Coast

Morning rain possibly heavy then easing to showers in the afternoon as gusty northerlies change westerly. Sunny spells at times from afternoon.
Highs: 17-19

Southland & Otago

Sunny spells, occasional showers from afternoon about Southland and coastal Otago (possibly heavy with thunderstorms and hail). Central Otago mainly dry although the chance of a shower from afternoon is there. Breezy westerly winds, strong about coastal Southland.
Highs: 15-21
