Saturday’s national forecast

A northwesterly airflow lies over the country today, a front works it’s way northwards over the South Island this afternoon then onto the lower North Island this evening. Heavy rain in the west with the front, only the odd shower spreading eastwards. Winds in the east strong at times from the north or northwest however.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Early rain (possibly heavy) eases to the odd shower, perhaps a sunny spell breaking through. Rain again overnight with a few heavy falls. Increasing northwesterly winds.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Early morning rain eases to the odd shower, perhaps a few sunny spells also. Later in the evening rain moves in again becoming heavy overnight. Gusty northwesterly winds.
Highs: 15-17
 
Eastern North Island
Early morning rain clears then mostly sunny, overnight further rain moves in spreading from the west. Winds during the day gusty from the northwest rising to gale overnight.
Highs: 19-20
 
Wellington
The odd shower, rain later in the evening becoming heavy overnight. Northwesterly winds rising to gale by evening.
High: 15
 
Marlborough & Nelson
Increasing high cloud, rain spreads from the west in the evening. Northwesterly winds strengthen from afternoon rising to gale by evening about Marlborough. Winds may reach severe gale later in the evening about Marlborough.
Highs: 14-16
 
Canterbury
Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, a few spots of rain possible late afternoon or evening. About the foothills expect more persistent areas of rain spreading from the west at times late afternoon / evening. Northerlies winds strengthen rising to gale about inland areas from afternoon then easing in the evening, winds may remain fairly gusty overnight about parts of northern North Canterbury.

West Coast
Cloudy, rain about South Westland with heavy falls spreads northwards in the afternoon. Thunderstorms are possible also. Winds strong from the north or northeast.
Highs: 13-14
 
Southland & Otago
Cloudy with some rain developing in the afternoon, clearing mid afternoon about Southland as gusty northerlies change westerly. Areas of rain continue for Otago especially in the north.
Highs: 11-14
