Saturday’s national forecast

Southwesterlies continue to flow across the country today bringing cold temperatures, many regions see showers once again although for many about the upper South Island it could be a fairly dry day in store. Heavy showers for the west of the North Island with possible thunderstorms.

Auckland & Northland
Strong southwesterly winds, gusty especially in the afternoon. Occasional showers, heavy at times about Auckland then clearing in the evening.

Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy periods with brisk westerlies, winds tend southwest in the afternoon
bringing showers which then clear in the evening.
Highs: 13-14

Waikato & Central North Island

Showers, heavy at times with small hail. Gusty westerlies tend a little
more southwest in the afternoon then showers clear in the evening with cloud
breaking away. Snow about the Central Plateau down to 500m, clearing in the
evening.
Highs: 10-12

Eastern North Island

Mostly sunny with gusty northwesterlies, winds change southwest mid to late
afternoon bringing showers which clear in the evening. Some snow about the
Wairarapa down to 500m and 600 to 700m about Hawkes Bay /  Gisborne.
Highs: 13-14

Western North Island

Showers, heavy at times with small hail and the risk of a thunderstorm.
Strong west to southwest winds. Showers clear in the evening with cloud breaking
away, winds also then ease.
High: 12-13

Wellington

Periods of cloud with brisk westerly winds, late afternoon winds change to
the south bringing the chance of a shower any of which clear in the
evening.
High: 12

Nelson

Mostly sunny with cloud a little more frequent from midday, cool
southwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-14

Marlborough

Mostly sunny with cloud a little more frequent from midday, cool
southwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury

Sunny spells with fresh cold southwesterlies freshening in the morning. The
odd shower and some small hail is possible right on the coast (mainly Banks
Peninsula), any of which ease in the afternoon and clear by evening. There could
be a few light snow flurries on Banks Peninsula to 500, possibly 400m
also. For inland North Canterbury a few heavy showers with hail last till this evening then clearing.

West Coast

Fairly dry with periods of cloud and sunny spells, cold southwesterly
winds. Greymouth northwards sees showers and small hail at times with snow to
400m then clearing away during the afternoon.
High: 11

Coastal Otago

Strong southwesterlies gusting to gale force on the coast, occasional
wintry showers with small hail at times. A few snow flurries to low levels (100
to 200m) too then clearing in the evening with southwesterlies easing. Near
Oamaru conditions will be mainly dry for much of the day with showers more
frequent about the Otago Peninsula and southwards.

Central Otago

Wintry showers and small hail with snow flurries to low levels (100 to
200m) clearing in the afternoon and cloud breaking away. Cold southwesterlies
ease in the evening and tend northwest overnight.
High: 7

Southland

Wintry showers and small hail at times, snow flurries to low levels (100 to
200m) then clearing mid afternoon with cloud breaking. Cold southwesterlies ease
and winds tend northwest at night.
High: 8
