MPI: ‘No invasion’ despite more fruit fly discoveries

The Ministry for Primary Industries says there isn’t a fruit fly invasion in Auckland, despite two more of the pests being found.

Seven Queensland fruit flies have been found in the past 10 days.

But the MPI says because they have most been found near one property, they think they’ve contained the flies.

The MPI says it does expect more fruit flies to be found

But officials are pointing to an incursion by the Mediterranean fruit fly in 1996 – when 41 adult flies were found – as an example of why the findings don’t mean the fly has established a foothold in New Zealand.
