Monday’s national forecast

A front moves over the North Island this morning then a low follows and crosses this afternoon, potentially unstable conditions for many with heavy areas of rain in the north. A slack pressure gradient over the South Island brings weather that is a bit more settled however afternoon / evening isolated showers develop about some inland areas with the chance of a heavy fall or two.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Heavy rain with some thunder possible early this morning then easing, further showers this afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms. Gusty northerlies tend westerly around midday then brisk to strong southwest later in the evening or overnight.

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Areas of rain, heavy about Taranaki this morning then again this afternoon for many with possible thunderstorms as northerlies change south to southwest. Rain eases later this evening.
Highs: 16-19

Eastern North Island

Some morning scattered rain then it may be dry for a time before a southwest change pushes into Wairarpa mid afternoon then reaching Hawkes Bay and Gisborne by evening with rain. Rain may be heavy with thunderstorms this afternoon then easing later in the evening.
Highs: 17-19

Wellington

Cloud increases this morning, afternoon rain as northerlies change gusty southerly.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, some rain develops this afternoon especially about the Sounds (chances are it may remain fairly dry elsewhere) then clearing in the evening. East to southeasterly winds freshen.
Highs: 18-19

Canterbury

Mostly sunny this morning, mid afternoon onwards isolated showers develop for some inland mainly Banks Peninsula southwards. A few of these showers could become heavy then clearing away in the evening. Light winds for most tending easterly near the coast.
Highs: 17-19

West Coast

Any early showers clear then expect sunny spells, there may be further isolated showers later afternoon / evening inland about the ranges. Light winds tend southwesterly this afternoon.
Highs: 16-20

Southland & Otago

Mostly sunny this morning, cloud builds a little from midday then there may be a few afternoon showers especially inland with the chance of an isolated heavy fall. Any showers clear in the evening. Light winds for most, westerlies about Southland.
Highs: 15-19
