Friday’s national forecast

A front passes over the North Island this morning with rain easing to showers, some of which could become heavy with thunderstorms this afternoon in the east. The South Island sees showers in the south and east, showers becoming heavy for inland areas of the upper South Island this afternoon some with thunderstorms and hail especially Nelson / Marlborough.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Early heavy rain eases to the odd shower, expect sunny spells also, brisk southwestesterly winds strong at times about Auckland.
Highs: 20-22

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Occasional showers, clearing at night. Breezy west to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 17-19

Eastern North Island

Heavy rain this morning, gradually easing and clearing from the south. Showers develop again in the afternoon some of which may be heavy with thunderstorms then clearing later in the evening.
Highs: 22-24

Wellington

Showers with brisk cool southerlies.
High: 16

Marlborough & Nelson

Sunny spells, afternoon showers possibly heavy with hail and a risk of thunderstorms then clearing in the evening. Afternoon easterlies for Marlborough. Southwesterlies about Nelson ease and winds become variable in the afternoon.
Highs: 18-20

Canterbury

Showers, mostly inland. Showers from afternoon possibly heavy (especially inland) as light winds tend southerly. Showers ease later in the evening then clearing overnight.
High: 18

West Coast
Sunny spells, chance of a shower or two otherwise mainly dry. West to southwesterly winds.

Highs: 16-19

Southland & Otago

Showers, easing from afternoon and clearing in the evening about Southland. Otago sees more frequent sunny spells with only the chance of a shower in the afternoon. Gusty west to southwesterly winds.
Highs: 14-19
