Friday’s national forecast

A front moves off the top of the South Island this morning then gradually moves northwards over the North Island for the rest of the day. Rain or showers out west with the front, high cloud and just a spot of rain out east.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mostly cloudy, occasional sunny spells especially about Northland. The odd shower from midday Auckland southwards then expect late evening / overnight rain. West to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-19

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Cloudy, showers or some rain develops late morning then clears overnight. Breezy west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 14-16

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud, some sun possible now and then. The odd spot of rain possible too otherwise mainly dry. Northwesterly breezes a little gusty about the Wairarapa.
Highs: 18-20

Wellington

Morning showers then clearing, perhaps a few afternoon sunny areas otherwise mostly cloudy. Gusty northwesterly winds.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson

Thick high cloud in the morning with a few spots of rain then expect sunny areas and drier weather in the afternoon. Breezy northwesterlies ease in the evening.
Highs: 16-20

Canterbury

Early high cloud clears then sunny with northwesterly breezes. Overnight winds change southerly with some cloud and the chance of a shower.
High: 20

West Coast

Early rain eases to occasional showers, west to northwesterly winds.
High: 14

Southland & Otago

A few morning sunny spells for Southland, mostly sunny about Otago. Mid to late afternoon expect showers as west to southwest winds freshen.
Highs: 14-15
