Tropical Cyclone Keni now Severe Category 3 storm, will merge with NZ low (+6 Maps)

Fiji is dealing with the wind and rain from Tropical Cyclone KENI this afternoon as it is upgraded this afternoon to a "severe" Category 3 tropical storm and is now as close to Fiji's main island as it will get.

It is a mostly sunny Easter Sunday across New Zealand with light winds under the influence of a high pressure. It is dry across the country after overnight showers.

On Monday the high pressure belt shifts eastward and southern parts of the country will be affected by a
trough coming from the west on Monday.

A few early light showers and morning clouds may greet some northern New Zealand regions as the front that brought rain to the West Coast yesterday completely disintegrates over the upper North Island.

Thursday and Good Friday will see high pressure crossing the country bringing mostly calm conditions to both main islands.

However a cold front which earlier in the week brought heavy rain to the West Coast is trapped under this high and is falling apart, delivering a lot of cloud to the North Island and a few showers and isolated downpours.

Cold front with heavy rain moving up NZ forecast to weaken over North Island (+4 Maps)

A cold front is slowly grinding up the West Coast on Tuesday bringing heavy rain and blustery winds. A low pressure system in the Southern Ocean is generating the front while higher pressure in the north and east is slowing its movement northwards.

Tonight and into Wednesday this front moves into the the North Island and starts to decay.


Monday's weather pause before Tuesday's change (+3 maps)

The working week before Easter Weekend sees a fairly settled Monday but a change arrives as soon as Tuesday, mostly for the South Island, thanks to a cold front and Southern Ocean low pressure system.

North Islanders will be mostly unaffected by this next cold front until Wednesday and Thursday when some rain slides up the western side of the island.

A very narrow but intense area of weather lies just off the western coastline of Northland, Auckland and Waikato as of late Saturday morning and is very slowly tracking eastwards towards land. It will cross over the upper North Island over Saturday PM and then across Sunday.


Temperatures tumble today but soon start to lift (+2 Maps)

A cold front and southerly has significantly cut temperatures back in the South Island today. Temperatures are markedly low because of the dominant southerly winds and the lack of daytime sunshine.

Maximum temperatures may struggle to even reach 10C in some areas. 

Parts of Canterbury will be over 8 degrees colder than average for mid March.
