Category 4 Cyclone Hola may reach Cat 5 by Friday, tracking towards northern NZ

Cyclone Hola has rapidly intensified to a Category 4 cyclone Thursday with sustained winds of 170km/h at the centre expected to rise even further to 200km/h by tonight or Friday morning and then ramp up even higher on Friday itself.

Tropical Cyclone Hola formed Wednesday morning and is likely to intensify further in the coming days, potentially reaching Severe Category 3 status on Thursday or Friday. In just 12 hours it has already reached Cat 2 status.

The storm is going to impact Vanuatu for the next few days and potentially New Caledonia too.


Cyclone Hola forms near Vanuatu (+4 Maps)

Cyclone Hola has formed this morning near Vanuatu and is a category 1 tropical cyclone. Central air pressure is 994hPa.

Hola is moving south west at 8 knots and is intensifying over sea surface temperatures of 28 to 30 degrees Celsius.


Large low to form over the North Island next 24 hours, heavy rain for some (+5 Maps)

A front currently lying across the Tasman sea will move northward and form a new low pressure system near
Northland on Wednesday morning. This developing low is today creating for very calm, humid, conditions in the north and this has lead to fog affecting flights at both Hamilton and Auckland domestic airports this morning.


Vanuatu, New Caledonia on alert as Tropical Cyclone formation begins (+6 maps)

A storm is developing near Vanuatu and is almost at tropical cyclone status with sustained winds circulating around the low at just below gale force and air pressure around 1000hPa. When winds reach gale force (63km/h) at the centre it will be given the name "Hola" by the Fiji Met Service and it will be a category 1 cyclone.

The third tropical cyclone in a matter of weeks is expected to come into the New Zealand area this weekend and may impact land, although modelling is still not locking in the future path.

The storm will be named “Hola” most likely on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest by the Fiji Met Service.

The leftovers from Aussie's Cyclone Kelvin to affect NZ early next week (+4 Maps)

The leftovers of an ex-tropical cyclone are coming towards New Zealand - but not how you might think. The remnants of what was Cyclone Kelvin, which made landfall the other day in north western Australia, will drift out over southern Australia and the Great Austraian Bight over the next few days to merge with a Southern Ocean system and form a new low on Monday over southern New Zealand.

Gita has gone and a large high is moving in behind it to bring a mostly dry, warm, weekend. However by Sunday the westerlies will be picking up in the South Island as a new low starts to develop in the Southern Ocean.
 
This low is being partially fuelled by the remnants of what was Cyclone Kelvin.

New Zealand still has another 36 hours or so of dealing with Gita's remnants but the worst has passed, generally speaking, for the country.
