A large high is in control of New Zealand's weather for the next few days bringing mainly settled, sunny, weather. Light winds means some heavier frosts tonight, especially through the South Island interior.

Rain continues in western regions bringing a period of heavy rainfall reaching 30mm per hour in some areas. Northerly winds and wind gusts will be enhanced and possibly exceed 120 km/h before the passage, mainly in the ranges and exposed parts of the east/central NZ. Elsewhere just a bit blustery, nothing to stress about.

The southerly change this week has already moved through and while snow did fall lower than initially forecast it has not been a major event with some places very quickly bouncing back to normal today temperature wise.

UPDATED 10:11pm:  Reports are coming in of isolated snow to sea level in Dunedin, mainly around Portobello Road area. A cold front has started to march up the South Island bringing snow generally down to about 150 to 180 metres where it is settling for now. Some snow flurries are going lower to around 100m with sleet and hail to sea level.

On Tuesday night the MetOcean Solutions wave buoy moored in the Southern Ocean just south of New Zealand recorded a massive 23.8 m wave.
