NZ's MetOcean measures largest wave ever recorded in Southern Hemisphere

On Tuesday night the MetOcean Solutions wave buoy moored in the Southern Ocean just south of New Zealand recorded a massive 23.8 m wave.

New Zealand is in an air pressure sandwich today with a big high moving towards the upper North Island at the same time as a big storm churns by well south of the lower South Island, nearer to Antarctica.


Drier than normal trend for most of New Zealand next 7 days (+3 Maps)

2018 has had plenty of rain events with most regions actually wetter than average for this time of the year. Soil moisture maps indicate just a few dry spots (like around Taihape, Gisborne and between northern Auckland and Whangarei) but none of these dry areas are serious, although they may be limiting pasture growth a little lately.


Aucklanders deal with more trees down and power outages on Saturday

UPDATED 5:04pm --- A burst of gusty to gale force winds on Saturday cut power to over 1000 Aucklanders and brought trees down, some even on to vehicles.

Branches heavy enough to crush cars and buildings, roofing iron ripped off and blown at speeds faster than the limit on our open roads, just a taste of what the network of powerlines and powerpoles across Auckland faced on Tuesday night as hurricane force winds hit Auckland with gusts over 200km/h.

Wednesday is the coldest day of the week for the North Island with the southerly flow firmly blowing across the day. It's a similar story in the South Island with hail showers and cold winds although conditions are easing back a little today in southern half of the island.

Update: Colder change moving into northern NZ with gales peaking tonight/overnight

UPDATED 9:06pm --- Colder air continues to move northwards this evening as the centre of the low causing the extra winds makes landfall in the western Waikato / South Auckland area. The public rain radar shows the centre moving in as of now/mid evening.


Tropical Cyclone Keni now Severe Category 3 storm, will merge with NZ low (+6 Maps)

Fiji is dealing with the wind and rain from Tropical Cyclone KENI this afternoon as it is upgraded this afternoon to a "severe" Category 3 tropical storm and is now as close to Fiji's main island as it will get.


Settled Sunday, but heavy rain for some on Monday (+Rainfall maps)

It is a mostly sunny Easter Sunday across New Zealand with light winds under the influence of a high pressure. It is dry across the country after overnight showers.

On Monday the high pressure belt shifts eastward and southern parts of the country will be affected by a
trough coming from the west on Monday.
