Weather expected for 4 hour drive

Hi, we are heading to Geraldine from Queenstown tomorrow, heading off around 9-10am. Trying to work out the weather from here along Lindus Pass and past lakes..., will there be any snow and is it raining the whole way? Just trying to assess the best and safest route to take. Thanks!

Hi there, that's quite a

Hi there, that's quite a tough question to answer because snow and rain will be in various elevations along that route. Generally speaking yes you may encounter snow, as Queenstown has snow in the forecast today and so too does Otago down to about 200m for a time. Keep up to date with NZTA for highway conditions.

Cheers and safe travels

Wrong weather station for Hawea Flat

The station you get info from for Hawea Flat - Observed at 7:50pm from: The Castle (ITKIHAWE3). This Station is actually for Ararata Road, Hawera.

Hi there thank you for that.

Hi there thank you for that. We'll see what we can do about that. We're hoping to improve our observations network in 2020. Thanks for this (great getting the Station ID as we can then easily identify it).

Kind regards

forecast

metservice says tommorow could be thundery while you guys say its patchy rain? will there be thunder? or just showers?

Hi there, we have a slow area

Hi there, we have a slow area of patchy rain which is now clearing away with a few showers behind it. We've just updated Saturday and it's a drier morning with showers or patchy rain developing later. There may be some heavy downpours later and looks like a low to moderate chance of an isolated thunderstorm or two later. We'll be closely watching the Auckland weather on Saturday.

Forecasts

Hi Philip and the team I still think you guys are the most reliable, consistent weather reporters. Keep up the great work, you all do an awesome job. I plan my weeks and weekends around your forecasts and I have never been disappointed. Have a great weekend :) JS

Hi JS, what a really lovely

Hi JS, what a really lovely message to get, especially after the negative press we received due to our Government competitors. Thanks heaps - we work really hard to be as accurate as possible, always room for improvement but messages like yours make it all worth while. Thanks so much, have a really lovely weekend.

Cheers

Bad Weather

Obviously Duncan was right in the first place. Metservice predictions are showing deteriotaing weather each day. There is a high chance of heavy snow at 400m showing on their outlook. Yesterday it was 500m moderate chance for the same area. What will it be tomorrow and then on Sunday and Monday? - 100m lol. Stacy

auckland thunder

hi when is the next chance auckland is getting thunder. I was woken by some lightning and thunder on monday. but when will we get a good thunderstorm?

Oh wow that's the million

Oh wow that's the million dollar question!! :) We may see some around on Sunday PM and Monday - otherwise nothing really locked in just yet. Auckland gets better chances of thunder in spring and late summer usually (October and February are often a couple of good months).

Thanks

thanks alot. you guys are the best. better than the forecasters of niwa that thinks they know everything

Snow for wanaka/queenstown

Are we likely to get any decent amounts of snow on the hills and mountains in Wanaka and Queenstown with this latest low coming? Or will it be more centred for the Canterbury area? Many thanks.

Hi there, no we see some snow

Hi there, no we see some snow for Wanaka and Q-town too, from Saturday to Tuesday are the main chances for slow flurries into those main centres. See our hourly 10 day forecasts for more for Queenstown and Wanaka (we have EVERY small part of NZ covered -  tried testing us!!)

Severe low pressure

Thanks for the work you do I find your forecasts pretty spot on.Have heard about this deep low in the Southern Ocean,me and the boys at work started wondering what would happen if a low like that made a direct hit on NZ.Would it be like the big snow in the early 90's (I'm in Christchurch) or not so bad or maybe worse.Has a low that deep hit us before?Just trying to clarify the classic smoko debate amongst us wannabe weather forecasters.Once again thanks for the forecasts.

Oh what a great question!! NZ

Oh what a great question!! NZ is a frustrating country for extreme weather - our mountains and ranges break up this severe weather and it can actually enhance the extreme conditions for some while weakening the weather for others. This is NOTHING like the mid 90s blast, you need a more easterly flow of moisture into Canterbury for that to happen. This set up is much more S to SW so that is usually drier for you. BUT....we must say the complicated nature of this set up says you also need to be up to date as there may be a SE lean to the winds for time which could be more interesting for Canterbury. But again....overall the region doensn't look as wintry as others.

Sorry we can't be more precise for you - just the nature of this set up!

Cheers for your awesome support!

Rain in Rotorua

Hi there, My daughter is having her 6th birthday party this Saturday (10th) and it is fully planned to be outside - we have a large section and very small inside house. My question is simply, is the rain in Rotorua on the 10th going to force us to move indoors or is the weather going to be better the following Saturday (17th)? I am very much considering postponing till then if the weather will have no rain. I know this is a hard question to ask about next weekend with it being so far in the future. Thanks so much!

G'day there By the looks of

G'day there

By the looks of things, Rotorua is dry this Saturday morning (10th) then the odd shower may start to move in from afternoon. The following Saturday (17th) is much the same however it may stay fairly dry till evening then rain moves in.

Winds from the northwest both days.

Sort of a half n half answer, hope it helps either way.

Cheers
Aaron

Thanks so much Aaron!

Thanks so much Aaron!

Will there be any nasty

Will there be any nasty weather in Christchurch due to the storm?

Hi there, at this stage

Hi there, at this stage Christchurch may have some cold rain this weekend with heavy snow above 400m on the ranges/hills with single digit highs. No severe weather for the city in any forecast though at this stage.

Hello, can you please advise

Hello, can you please advise why there is frequently a significant disparity between your forecast and that of metservice. For example currently for Saturday 10th August you forecast "Sunny spells, risk of a shower otherwise mainly dry. Nor'West winds. 30% chance of rain; while metservice predicts " Rain turning to showers, chance heavy. Northwest strengthening. Similarly you predict dry days wed and fri next week with 20% chance of rain and metservice predicts " Showers with southwesterlies" both days. It's a bit confusing and I'm trying to plan exterior painting. Can you let me know when weather might settle and have full dry days? Cheers Sharon

Hi Sharon, we both get our

Hi Sharon, we both get our data from various similar sources but we both interpret them in different ways sometimes. The data we use from IBM in our long range forecasts has been verified (independently according to IBM) as being more accurate than the NZ Government forecasters. We'd like to think our 5 day forecasts written by WW are accurate too. So it's really up to you to decide which forecaster seems most accurate for you. We often have different opinions, a bit like how restaurants can have the same ingredients but produce different menus. Long range forecasts can flip flop more though, so they are harder to be certain of, but a 20% chance of rain later next week with sou'westers does usually mean a few showers will be caught up in it - so we both have similar forecasts for Weds - Fri next week by the sounds of it. As for this Saturday, our maps and computer models still suggest there may only be showers but we'll be updating that again overnight when the next set of data comes in and helps us fine tune things. Hope that is helpful.

Awesome, many thanks for your informative answer :)

Wind

Hi I want to know how windy it will be for Auckland because of the storm next week

Hi there, if you click on our

Hi there, if you click on our Auckland forecast you can see Hourly forecasts for the next 10 days out, showing wind speeds for each day. Auckland may get up near gale force at times but it's not likely to be any stronger than the wind we just had.  So "blustery at times" may be a good way of phrasing next week's weather in Auckland.

Temperatures

Hi there, when do average temperatures start trending upwards again?

Hi, thanks for the question.

Hi, thanks for the question. Temperatures are trending upwards for the rest of this week, then drop after this big low passes by on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. Things look to warm  back up again later next week and going into next week. As for more generally speaking, usually by mid August (another week or two) we often tend to notice that 'spring bounce' in the temperatures.

Snow Dunedin next week

Hi I see the talk of giant low crossing country next week. I know it may be too early to know. But will there be heavy snow in Dunedin and will it be down to sea level. Thanks.

Could be something around the

Could be something around the 13th / 14th August but that is a week away and model information can change a fair bit in that time frame. At this stage it looks like it may only be brief snow to sea level if it does happen, once again, nothing garantueed this far out.

Will have to wait and see! :)

Air pressure

Nobody seems to bother putting current atmospheric air pressure figures for all the main centres on their forecasts anymore why is that ? When air pressure tells so much about what is going on and likely to happen in the near future.

Hi there, we're launching a

Hi there, we're launching a new rural focused website very soon and it will have much more data on it, including air pressure trends for 10 days out plus hourly updates for each of those 10 days. So we've answered your question - we still do it (or are at least bringing it back!). We'll be announcing this new site in the coming days...so yes, very near future! :)

Are there any polar blasts coming for the country in the foreseeable future, if so, how low will snow be in CHCH

There may be a cold blast

There may be a cold blast again next week - see Phil's latest weather video as he touches on this. As for Christchurch, nothing in the next week sorry.

Snow - Golden Bay Takaka Hill

Your Tuesday am snow map needs to adjust a little northerly! I'm at 600 m on top of the Takaka Hill... saw them put the snow plough through at midnight - then give up and close the road... still snow falling medium-light this morning, sun from the east but snow cloud from the Kahurangi in the south west. We have about 12-15 cm on the property, right up into the highest beech trees - you wouldn't want to drive in it, since we still have road edgings out from Cyclone Gita 2 years ago... The weka are very baffled... Jac

Really appreciate the local

Really appreciate the local update Jac, much appreciated! Poor weka!!

Stay warm,

Hi

Are we going to get snow all round taupo tonight or tomorrow

Hi there Use these maps and

Hi there

Use these maps and you can see where snow may fall around NZ over the next few days.

https://www.snow-forecast.com/maps/dynamic/nz

windy.com also has some usefull maps once you learn to navigate around them.

Basically Taupo itself will probably not see snow but there may well be some about surrounding hills / mountain ranges.

Hope that helps!

Snow in Dunedin tonight?

Hi I wonder will be snow in Dunedin tonight, I miss snow so much Cheers

It may get close overnight

It may get close overnight but perhaps just a tad to warm for anthing to settle at sea level, more then like sitting above 100 to 200m.

Here's hoping a few flurries make it to you :)

Snow in Ohakune and Waiouru

Hi Team, I would appreciate if your team can tell if it is going to snow in Taihape, waiouru and Ohakune anytime on sunday. If yes will there be accumulations on the road? I am excited to know about this ground level snow before I could plan my trip this sunday. Cheers, Vicky

Hey Vicky, yes there is a

Hey Vicky, yes there is a chance of low snow around Central Plateau. It's unclear how heavy it will be, probably not too major, so hopefully the highways can remain open but there could be some closures, especially overnight. Snow isn't currently forecast by us for Taihape, but Waiouru, Ohakune, National Park and possibly even around Turangi snow is possible. Also, please note you can search on our website and app for every single NZ location...if there is a place name on Google maps, we have a forecast for that location. This is a service tax owned and funded MetService and NIWA do not  provide.

All the best, safe travels and keep up to date with NZTA for high conditions too!

Governors Bay weather, 10/11th Aug

Hi there, I've got family coming to visit us in Governors Bay, CHCH, next weekend. I'm trying to figure out (and book early) if we'll be able to do some outdoor activities... or will it be too wet? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, next weekend looks a

Hi, next weekend looks a little uncertain at this stage but the current forecast we have looks mainly dry - but shows some chance of showers.

Here's our 10 day forecast for Governors Bay:  www.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/Governors%2520Bay%2C%2520Lyttelton

It also includes hourly forecasts which, closer to the time, will be more helpful too. All the best with the planning and keep an eye on Phil's weather videos next week too for more context as to what's going on.

Cheers :)

Snow Dunedin

Please tell me it's going to snow in Dunedin - it's been a disappointing winter!

Hey there, yes it's certainly

Hey there, yes it's certainly been a mild winter so far overall but August (at least the first half of it) looks quite different with cold snaps. The one this weekend will be very cold in Southland but probably not cold enough in coastal Otago for any significant snow in Dunedin. There might be a few isolated flurries, especially higher up. Monday has the best chance with snow possibly falling in the city - but it's not likely to be much if it does fall, and probably mixed with rain and hail. Double digit highs by Tuesday. Another possible chance for low level snow possibly in 10 days too (not yet locked in).

Cheers :)

thunderstorms in wellington / Porirua?

Good morning, is there any chance of a thunderstorm for the next few days? And when? Cheers Thomas.

Hey Thomas, there may be a

Hey Thomas, there may be a few thunderstorms around the country due to the swing in temperatures coming in however they will be isolated and hit and miss along the western side (for the most part). So yes some chance, but whether it hits Porirua or Kapiti or Taranaki even, that is the question that's hard to answer in advance.

Cheers
