Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the supportive message and for the idea! Yes noticed that smog yesterday - the precursor to the fog we have this morning. We have actually built a fog forecaster we are trialling and in theory it could have smog attached to it. The issue in NZ is that the Government really loves to limit how much data is out there (unlike ALL other first world nations) - so because the Government makes NIWA and MetService agencies heavily commercial it means WW can't access tax funded/owned data to make products like this. So WW not only has to pay the Govt taxes for data we then cannot use, but we also have to heavily pay for data offshore just to be able to run our company!  So it's a little complicated but we are getting there - we hope to have a fog (and maybe someday smog) forecasters out in the near future though :)

Cheers!

Rain records

Hi How do I find out what the rainfall level was on a particular day

Hi there, unfortunately we

Hi there, unfortunately we cannot freely share tax funded data due to MetService and NIWA's own commercial priorities - we get legal threats from these Government Agencies if we try to share tax funded data. So you'll need to contact either of them directly. NZ is the only country in the world to operate this way, hugely limiting how we can help with simple requests like this.

Kind regards
WW

Winter

Where is winter.. it’s kinda scary how warm this winter has been. Really havnt felt the cold at all this year in Auckland..This surely can’t be normal or a good thing..

Hi there, very good question.

Hi there, very good question. The daytime highs are especially above normal and we have even warmer than normal weather coming in the weeks ahead. In Auckland many people notice spring conditions in early August so there isn't much time left for winter to 'do its thing'. In saying that, it was mid August 2011 when we had a nationwide Antarctic blast that brought snow into Auckland and Northland - so we can never rule out a major blast, but as for daily conditions winter is definitely spluttering this year here.

I’ve still got tomato plants

I’ve still got tomato plants in the garden in perfect health..Hasn’t been cold enough to kill them even

Just stop it happening...

I have moved 500km away from where I lived in Pukekohe to Palmerston North and can easily find the City weather forecast but can't for the life of me stop the site opening below that to Pukekohe. I have tried everything! Thanks. Di

Hi Di! Are you talking about

Hi Di! Are you talking about your desktop computer or mobile device? Sounds like you may have a caching problem (it's trying to auto remember where you live). You may need to clear your cache to reset. We're overhauling the site in spring which will fix some of these bugs. Hopefully that works for you. Let us know if it doesn't!

Past data history

Hi, I was wondering if you have a section where we can look up past weather history. I wanted to see what the strength of the wind was for yesterday here in Hampden on: wednesday 3rd night /thursday 4th early morning . It seemed extreme! The closest place is Oamaru where I can find that it is recorded on another site but it would have be a different strength here. Thanks Michelle

Hi Michelle That is something

Hi Michelle

That is something you will have to contact Metservice or NIWA about as they hold that type of information. Good luck! :)

Weather station data

Hi guys.PWS ITAURANG51 observed at 7.39am saying it's 37deg.The last 3 day's high temps have been incorrect.Cheers Deano .

Morning Deano, as nice as 37

Morning Deano, as nice as 37 degrees might be for some it is clerly wrong! :) We've removed it for now - so it should automatically transfer to another nearby station today for you.  Thanks for the update.

Tekapo

Hey - I really hate how no station has Tekapo as a weather forecast destination, despite the weather balloon being there. It is always linked to Twizel or Timaru, both at lower altitudes. We travel to Tekapo every July and I am across all weather sites for weeks in advance but I still end up doing my own weather analysis of various maps. Comment???

Hi there, you'd need to ask

Hi there, you'd need to ask MetService about this as we're only a free service but they are the tax funded weather service for Government. We have tried to get a few local ones in that area on our observations page - but the lack of population there would be the main driver for not too much data - in saying that, heavily touristy so makes sense for more focus. Thanks for the message - we're improving the quality of forecasts around NZ and we do have specific 10 day forecasts for Tekapo you may find helpful and accurate.

Opinion please

Hi..given it is winter..it will get wet at some stage..(yes/no?)..at what point is any long range forecast predicting this.. thanks again for your excellent service..

Great question - at this

Great question - at this stage high pressure looks to dominate the start of the month so perhaps more of the same for at least the next 14 to 21 days. A lot of high pressure systems still extending from Australia.

Warm July weather in Auckland

Hi there, Just wondering if you can tell me why we're having such warm weather in Auckland with overnight lows of 12 degrees. Thanks!

A subtropical northerly

A subtropical northerly airflow is being directed over New Zealand at the moment hence the warm nights, it will eventually change later this week with the direction changing to the south. Won't be as warm then!

July in Dunedin

Hello WW Team Do you have a forecast for the month of July for Dunedin? As in, cold, wet, snow? Or more like this past week? You guys are my weather go-to guys when I have this kind of question. Thanking you and keep up the excellent work A.C.

Can let you know through till

Can let you know through till about mid July, beyond that it starts to turn into a guessing game.

Northerlies and the slightly warmer weather which we are having at the moment will go on Thursday as winds tend colder southwest. Only Friday looks to see a period of showers otherwise it's mainly dry. Temperatures start to warm up again from Tuesday 9th then it may stay relatively mild till mid July when a period of cold southwesterlies moves through.

So there doesn't appear to be any big snow dumps in the forecast for Dunedin for the first half of July at this stage, looking mainly dry. Temperatures fairly average for the time of year, edging into warmer then normal periods at times.

Hope that helps, and thanks! :)

Cheers

By then an anticyclone may be pushing in from the Tasman clearing out the weather we are about to be dealt to this coming week, so hopefully it will be mainly settled.

Auckland rain

Hi how hey heavy is the rain going to be this Wednesday for Auckland thankyou

Hi there, the latest rain

Hi there, the latest rain maps suggest moderately heavy rain on Wednesday for a time. Will probably be until Monday before we can lock in with a bit more detail as this set up is a little messy.

Whakatane rain

Hi there! Could you help me understand what are the odds of the weather turning to rain in the morning of July 2nd between Whakatane and Whakaari, please? Thank you so much!

Hi there, looks like NE winds

Hi there, looks like NE winds picking up and a few showers about at this stage.  All the best and keep an eye on our detailed Whakatane forecast for more details. :)

Snow gods

Hi, Can you please have a consult with the North Island Snow Gods and see what they are up too? We can't get any info from them and are hoping that you might have a more direct link with them!! Are they planning on sending us a good dumping of the white stuff anytime soon? any big winter storms due?? ie before the school hols...Ruapehu isn't looking as icing sugar coated as she should so they need to get a wriggle on ;-) Many thanks in advance and for all your awesome weather watching!!

Hi there, we'll do our best

Hi there, we'll do our best BUT sorry nothing significant at this stage, it's either too dry or then too warm. Might be some snow a week from now. All these highs from Australia are bringing either warm air, or, dry. Dry seems to be the biggest issue for the North Island. We're looking closely for the next snow event so check back for any news and weather updates. Thanks for the support too - it's very much appreciated!! :)

sun or cloud

Hi - do you get much sunshine hours at this time of year?

Hi there, at this time of the

Hi there, at this time of the year (Just 5 days past the shortest day of the year) we have the lowest sunshine hours available. Lowest hours are in the south of the country. For example Invercargill has a sunrise at 8:30am and sets around 5:10pm...around 8 hours and 40 minutes of possible available sunlight (if it's not cloudy!). Compare that to Kaitaia in the north which has sunrise an hour earlier at 7:30am and sets just before 5:30pm - almost 1 and half hours more sunlight with 10 hours available sunshine hours when it's not cloudy or foggy.

Auckland fog

Hi there, Just wondering your thoughts on the chance of fog tonight/early morning tomorrow for Auckland Airport? Cheers

Hi there, there is a chance

Hi there, there is a chance of some fog patches tomorrow morning but clear skies too. Here's our latest data indicating some chance - but the forecast also suggests it may not be too serious, or at least broken up.

Kind regards
WW Team

thanks heaps for your

thanks heaps for your detailed reply!

Inland Otago

Hi Philip Any chance at all that the forecast might change and bring snow to central inland Otago (Naseby area) next week? Earth.nullschool maps look like it might, but seems to be hard to tell. Will an Antarctic low manage to bust through that infernal high to deliver us a fresh snowy blast before the school holidays begin and the slopes become crowded? Or is it just destined to be cold, wet rain? Snowfully yours, AJ

Hi AJ, thanks for the

Hi AJ, thanks for the question. Had a good look and from what I can see Naseby looks basically bone dry for the next 10 days. There may be some spits mid to late next week due to heavy West Coast rain that is possible briefly. We may have to wait another two weeks to get a decent southerly at this stage. We are snow sorry. :)  Phil.

Waitarere Beach, Levin, Manawatu

Is there any chance of a frost at Waitarere Beach tonight? Thanks

It's looking fairly chilly

It's looking fairly chilly but being close to the coast a frost isn't looking as likely as say Levin which is a tad further inland. 2 or 3 degrees overnight does look possible for you though.

Cheers

Forecast

Just wondering why there's a difference in the forecasted temps between the regular and full forecasts. Tonight for Watkworth is forecasted at 9 degrees, and for the full forecast it is 5 degrees. Just wondering which one to expect. Thanks

The 5 degree overnight temp

The 5 degree overnight temp is more for southern rural parts of Auckland, Warkworth would not drop as low overnight.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Aaron

No rain

Today in Auckland the forecast said strong winds and rain but nothing happened

Hi there anonymous, not sure

Hi there anonymous, not sure who you are but someone appears to be writing to WW daily frustrated with MetService forecasts not WeatherWatch ones. Since Friday we've gone out of our way to saying basically little rain or wind would be coming to Auckland for Sunday. This was supported by multiple news graphics and even rainfall maps showing that.

We are a free service entirely independent of the MetService, MetOcean and NIWA forecasts your taxes all fund. You'll need to write to MetService to ask them why they had such big forecasts today (MetService also prompted Auckland Civil Defence to issue statements about adverse weather today.our forecast since Friday said some patchy morning rain (less than 5mm) then sunny spells and mainly dry with light westerlies picking up a bit in the afternoon.

In the future we won't be replying to people angry about MetService forecasts - we work REALLY hard to provide our own forecasts and none of them today indicated a stormy day for Auckland.

Kind regards and thank you for using our entirely free service.

Unfortunately the NZ Herald

Unfortunately the NZ Herald jumped on the bandwagon as well and had a story about how "wild and windy" it was going to be. Shame they don't listen to you.

Whether or not

Hi there, Don't take it to heart....you do a real good job!

east auckland downpour

just had a heavy downpour passed through. looking as though there can be more?

Hi there, we just expect a

Hi there, we just expect a couple of showers tonight, possibly a little heavy, but plenty of long dry spells. Increasingly dry weather overnight.

Thunder

hi Im in south east Auckland and I just heard thunder. Thats not in the forecast. dark clouds around though.

Hi there, cheers for the

Hi there, cheers for the local update and thank you for using our entirely free service. There is no lightning data showing up in the past 60 minutes anywhere in the North Island but looking at rain radar it's possible there was a single isolated rumble way out to sea in the Gulf. We wouldn't normally include that in a land forecast though. Main rain bands now clearing to the south with showers moving in from the west later.

Cheers
