Temperature Trends: Overnight Thursday and daytime Friday

Still cooler than normal for most of the country overnight tonight in a southwesterly airflow. Alexandra is the coolest spot on 6 degrees meanwhile Auckland gets down to a low of 16.

Average to above average temperatures for most of the North Island on Friday, a west to southwest breeze keeps temperatures about western coastal areas a little cool. The interior of the South Island starts to warm up with coastal areas still average due to onshore winds in the afternoon.

Above average and below average temperatures What is an average temperature measured over how long?

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question. The averages are based on historic temperatures for this day (or night) over the lifetime of weather stations. Some stations may only be 30 years old, others may be 70+. IBM than compares that to other weather data in the area from that date to help make it more granular - but also to give it a simplistic/even look.

It's not a perfect science due to the NZ Government limiting so much data we all collectively tax fund - unlike any other modern nation. We hope the Commerce Commission investigation into Niwa and MetService results in changing this setup to help dramatically improve all weather data in NZ - including the forecasts that *all* Forecast Outlets (both Government and private) provide back to the public at no charge.

Cheers
