Taranaki hit by storm, heading north

Filed in:

Stormy weather has now hit Taranaki.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the squalls and thunderstorms are moving a little slower than expected but are still moving north and tonight Waikato, Auckland, Northland and Bay of Plenty will start to see rougher weather moving in.

NZHerald.co.nz is reporting that the storm has now hit Taranaki, with the fire service dealing with flooding in Opunake and high winds in New Plymouth lifting a roof from a house.

The lightning tracker at WeatherWatch.co.nz is detecting a sudden influx in thunderstorms with over 900 strikes recorded in the past 60 minutes mostly around Taranaki and out to sea.

The crown forecaster earlier issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northern Taranaki.

Those thunderstorms will tonight move up and into the west coast of the North Island hitting Auckland after 6pm.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says they will come in surges, not a constant stream.

Lightning Storm

Awesome lightning show out west Auckland at moment, Coming over the ranges

Lightning Tracker

...is looking very colorful esp around AK, Waikato and Taranaki, but not much around South Island and Canterbury, in spite of Cb tops breaking off from the ranges all day, and giving us the odd spit!!

....but, wouldn't be surprised if we see some "summer lightning" to the far, far west of CH tonight....keep looking... 8 - ]
