Saturday's national forecast - rain band slowly moves up the West Coast

High pressure still holds over the North Island for Saturday but is being pushed off the South Island due to a weak area of low pressure and a cold front with some heavy falls.

NORTH ISLAND:
Light winds for most at first but northerlies becoming strong in Wellington today and brisk in other exposed parts of the lower North Island. A very light easterly possible in Northland. Dry everywhere just an isolated light shower risk in eastern Northland. Some fog patches first thing.

SOUTH ISLAND:
Rain moves up the West Coast with some heavy falls. Only a little spills over into Southland and Otago and it's a bit patchy with large dry areas, while others may get some soaking rain. Overnight showers and rain more likely in the east. Some rain or showers late today or this evening in Nelson. Morning fog in Canterbury.
