MARINE: Strong SW winds create dangerous waves around NZ this week (+2 Maps)

Filed in:

The strong Sou'West flow across NZ plus low pressure over the Tasman at the weekend has generated dangerous waves for western and southern parts of the country for Monday, then a new surge comes in to the south later Wednesday and across Thursday.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the wave heights in the west will be 6 to 8 metres during Monday afternoon, incredibly dangerous for small vessels. People should also avoid fishing on rocky western areas, like Auckland's west coast, until conditions ease.

Wave heights and swells do reduce on Tuesday but around Wednesday and certainly going into Thursday even larger waves (over 8 metres) will push back into southern and now eastern parts of the South Island as it surges up the country from the Southern Ocean.
