Heavy rain will continue across the western and northwestern regions of the South Island today. The best chances for heavy rain will move from Westland this morning into Nelson and northwest Marlborough for this afternoon and this evening. Heavy rain could also affect Taranaki tonight.

Winds will be a factor as well. Gusty north to northwest winds are expected for these areas.

A map of significant climate events for the United States in June looks almost apocalyptic: hellish heat, ferocious fires and severe storms leaving people injured, homeless and even dead.

That followed a warm winter and early season droughts. News came Monday that the mainland United States experienced its warmest 12 months since the dawn of record-keeping in 1895.


High hangs on for much of the week

Monday is looking like another sunny day

High pressure continues to slowly move across the Tasman Sea, controlling our weather as it does.

That means a settled day is expected across most of the country.  Gisborne is likely to see a few showers tomorrow.  Hawkes Bay could also see some showers, but the chances are not as great.

The rest of the country will see a mainly sunny day.

Across the North Island, most areas are seeing plenty of sunshine, although eastern parts of the NI, including Wairarapa and Wellington are going to be a bit cloudier.

Much of the South Island is looking sunny at this hour as well.  However, some far eastern and far southern spots are likely to be a bit cloudy.


Winter could end on a dry note

Unsettled weather slowly returns late next week

The big area of high pressure that has provided much of the country with settled weather this weekend, will continue to do so for the early part of the next week.  In fact, most of the North Island could stay dry all week long.  Parts of the South Island are a bit of different story.
