I don’t know what it’s like at your place, but here in the western Waikato we had some shaking going on early this afternoon.

And it wasn't an earthquake.

Low pressure will shaking up our weekend weather.  This system still looks to be a fairly quick-moving system and is unlikely to produce widespread severe weather.  However, we will be keeping an eye on a few places today.

A hail shower in Porirua yesterday afternoon produced this strong funnel cloud - had it touched down it would've been a small scale tornado or waterspout.

Strong winds target Central NZ, Deep South

It will be another day of strong westerlies across the country.  The main focus for the strong winds will be about central New Zealand and the lower South Island.


More rain and wind for Monday

Central New Zealand and parts of the South Island could see more rough weather on Monday.

Another piece of energy will help further destabilize an already unstable situation.  So whilst there has been some easing today, redevelopment of severe gales and heavy rain is possible for tomorrow.


Heavy rain and thunderstorm threat update

Thunderstorms were rolling across central New Zealand and the central North Island this morning, producing brief heavy rain and small hail.  WeatherWatch.co.nz Facebook reader Andrew Blair reported thunder and lightning over Levin early this morning.  Facebook reader Cheryl Johnstone reported some hail as well.


Thunderstorms, heavy rain still possible today

Central New Zealand will be the target for thunderstorms this morning.  Lighting tracker continues to show strikes offshore, west of Nelson north to west of Tarankai.  That includes strikes showing up along the Kapiti Coast.
