ANOTHER CRACKING AUCKLAND SUMMER'S DAY...

...FIFTY SHADES OF GREY!!!! Why is there so much cloud?

Hi there - it's a bit

Hi there - it's a bit depressing each morning isn't it!?  The westerlies are to blame. La Nina this year is weak and hasn't yet really had much impact on New Zealand so instead the westerly pattern (from spring) is still going. This summer was never (in our mind) going to be a sunny one for Auckland but we did think it would be a little warmer than this. We may have to wait until January for more of a change. Sorry!!!

Cheers

Worst start to summer

The weather in Auckland has been bad, really bad. I am amazed at how close Coromandel is yet they have sun and temperatures 4-5 degrees warmer than us. I really hope January brings a change, so far there hasn't been a day where I have thought I need to go for a swim to cool down. I am still wearing long sleeve T's most of the days because of the cold winds and lack of sun shine!! moan moan

Enjoy it!

I for one is loving this weather!! It sure beats sun burns and the beaches are not even crowded, its fantastic. Lets hope it sticks around!

Move to UK then

If you love this weather then move to the UK. Pretty sure you are in the minority. Most of us love a bit of sun and warm in the few months of summer..

stars in the sky too bright

I have noticed for the time of November and now into dec.starting SW seems ending NW a star like none other than I've ever seen before its so bright cant even almost stair at it to long its more as if its a reflection on another moon of another light source or something just hitting the very tip of a celestial body of some kind CAN ANY TRUE EXPLANATION B TOLD HERE WITHOUT SOME CRAZY LIE . WHAT IM SEEING , seeing is believing ,my eyes are not crazy!!! its not just me rite

Bright star

Would it not be Venus?

Waiheke Island New Years Eve

Hi Whats the weather looking like on Waiheke for New Years Eve? Cheers

G'day there NYE, it's looking

G'day there

NYE, it's looking mostly cloudy. Chance of a shower or two during the day but expect long dry spells too. Winds breezy from the west or southwest. New Year's Day sees morning cloud break to sunny spells, southwesterly winds.

So it isn't looking that wet or anything however a shower or two is possible for much of the day and evening then starting to dry out more overnight.

Hope things go well for you! :)

Rain for the night

Hi I live in the Auckland Area and was just wondering if we will be getting heavy rain tonight. We are camping at the moment and just want to be prepared.

Hi there, yes we do expect

Hi there, yes we do expect the odd heavy shower, easing overnight. All the best!

Wind

Why is it still so windy in tauranga, usually it's a lot calmer by now...or am I wrong?

Hi there - we have a bit of a

Hi there - we have a bit of a spring pattern still with us (high pressure to the west, low pressure to the south) . The winds may be a bit off and on, as they sometimes can be in December. Remember New Zealand is comprised of two small islands in the roaring 40s, so unless we have a big high over the top of us our weather does tend to be cloudier and windier.

Auckland "summer"

Merry Xmas guys, Wow the forecast for the first week of holidays in Auckland looks pretty cold, average and gloomy. Is there any change coming for some actual "summer" before we all go back to work? In my case on the 9th... hoping its not all going to be this crappy Cheers

Hi there - yes the Southern

Hi there - yes the Southern Ocean area is dictating our weather at the moment, hence the colder southerly changes coming in. We do see some hot, sunny, days next week in Auckland. January may also see a swing away from these cooler changes and into hotter conditions.
Cheers

And for Wellington???!

It's been grim for months here! No spring to speak of and summer has been diabolical so far. Do you see any hope for us in the coming weeks?? Fingers crossed!

A good spell of weather

A good spell of weather coming Boxing Day to Weds - then down hill again with wind and showers. Hopefully in January we'll see a La Nina swing in our pattern, that could create a hotter, drier, summer for you. Make the most of Boxing Day to Wednesday :) Fingers crossed for a change after Jan 1!

THE WARMEST PLACE IN NZ for the year.

Every year we are all told which city is the SUNNIEST place in New Zealand. How about the WARMEST place in New Zealand. Some places in New Zealand never get credit..... Susan Napier

HI Susan, NIWA normally

HI Susan, NIWA normally compiles a list of which places were hottest, coldest, sunniest, wettest etc - at the end of each season (and usually an annual round up).  They are the gate keepers to public data (the reason the Government has organised an official review into their practices is because others can't freely display this public data we have all paid for). So, if you have any issues about which places are warmest you're best to contact NIWA directly via Twitter or their website for more info (as your taxes fund them).

Christmas Eve

Hi Chaps - Seasons Greetings to you, and thank you for another year of accuracy, superb service and interesting feedback!!! I know it's a little far out to be very accurate, but is it likely to be wet In Auckland on Christmas Eve do you think - have to fit in mowing the lawns before the family onslaught arrive!

Hi there, thanks for the very

Hi there, thanks for the very kind feedback, much appreciated :)
It's definitely too far out to lock in, but, the good news is we do predict plenty of dry weather next week. So if not Christmas Eve, the day before maybe :) We'll have much more details probably by this Friday. We don't want to have daily updates as the models are moving around too much, but we are seeing a trend/pattern emerging and we'll share this on Friday hopefully - to cover the build up to Christmas Day and our first more 'locked in' Christmas Day forecast.

Cheers

Summer time vibe

G'day Weather watch team Firstly many thanks for the site its very accurate and you are most generous with your knowledge. I've had a look at the forecast for the next ten days and when the "partly cloudy skies" days arrive over the weekend and the beginning of next week, will it feels like summer again? To me this current weather feels like spring again !! I'm based on the west coast of the Auckland region and it felt cold today ! Once again thanks for the most excellent site .. Many thanks Henri C

G'day there Henri Thanks for

G'day there Henri

Thanks for the kind words! Is much appreciated by the team.

The pattern is quite changeable at the moment and yes your right quite spring like again, conditions may settled down a little early next week with more sun then we've had lately, temperatures in the low 20's although southwesterlies may still be a little breezy.

We'll have to wait it out for a little longer yet till we see signs off summer I think.

Xmas Day

Hi Phil Early indications look very promising for Xmas to me. A long way to go but what are your thoughts? Also, I take this opportunity to wish you guys all the very best for Xmas & thank you for providing an excellent service Cheers Dave

Howdy Dave, thanks very much

Howdy Dave, thanks very much for the kind message - and Merry Christmas to you too :)   Yes our feelings are that things are currently looking better rather than worse for Christmas Day. We just this minute put a story up talking about the long range models, take a look at it :) We'll have more details to lock in later this week.

A question

Hi I was wondering if I should wear winter clothes or summer clothes

Christmas in the park Auckland

Hi is Saturday afternoon/evening going to be clear or raining, Christmas in the park is on and would love to go if its not raining. Any induction?

Hi there, have written the

Hi there, have written the below in response to a question on the weather for Saturday in Auckland.

"The rain moving through tomorrow looks timed to move in early afternoon (1pm perhaps) then ease late afternoon to the odd shower for the rest of the day. Northerlies then winds change gusty west to southwest as rain eases to the odd shower.

- WW Team"

Updated 10:28am Saturday:  There's a chance showers / drizzle may linger longer. Sunday looks even drier.

Hope that helps! :)

Weather

http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/auckland?page=1 Hi WW, NASA are saying that since there latest study has proven that the Antarctic ice shelf is crumbling/melting and correcting around the Antarctic sea we in NZ are going to be permanently weather affected due to the expanding icepack developing as the south pole melts? Is this correct please. If so why hasn't Government advised us all, do they know? Please warm them please. https://www.nasa.gov/content/goddard/antarctic-sea-ice-reaches-new-record-maximum See the data on this web page recently. See the expanding sea ice building up (see above attached) as the Antarctica ice shelf crumbles into the sea, - adjacent to our shores. Making the ice pack move closer to NZ causing weather changes I propose. Saturday 10/12

Hi there, Thanks for replying to my previous query. Just wondering if you had an update on when the weather should clear by on Saturday. We are playing in the Avondale-Auckland region.

Hi there The rain moving

Hi there

The rain moving through tomorrow looks perfectly timed to move in early afternoon (1pm perhaps) then ease late afternoon (4 or 5 pm) to the odd shower for the rest of the day. Northerlies then winds change gusty west to southwest as rain eases to the odd shower.

About the best I can do for now. Hope your game goes well if you decide to go ahead.

11/12 to 19/12 holiday

Hi there, we are visiting Queenstown from Melbourne. And it looks like it will be raining throughout next week. Any chance of any good weather?

Hi there It's a fairly west

Hi there

It's a fairly west to northwest pattern for much of next week, you'll get showers at times spreading from the west but there will be dry periods and sun now and then. It looks like most of this is building to a front moving through later on Thursday (15th) then clearing away on Friday. Saturday looks good and perhaps Sunday although that's a long way away and chances are the forecast may have changed a bit by then.

Satuday 10/12

Hi there, We have a cricket game on Sat 10/12 between 12:30pm-6:30pm. I see lots of rain is forecast for the afternoon. Should we call off the game?WIll there be periods of sun/chance of play?

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question. We can't give you a precise time when it will clear this far out but it appears it will clear at some point in the afternoon. It's a fast moving front and by Friday AM we'll have a good idea how long it may linger and better specifics for a clearance time,

Cheers

A difference of opinion....or is it?

I am just curious as to why I look at your weather, TV channel 1 & 3 weather and marine forecasts and I see such a difference in predictions in general. Why is that?

Why are the All Blacks

Why are the All Blacks different to the Wallabies? Why is KFC different to McDonalds? Or Ford to Holden? We're all different - we all communicate the weather in different ways to suit a particular audience, and we use different sets of data to rely on which can create different forecasts.  basically :)

Cheers
WW

The All blacks and the

The All blacks and the Wallabies both play rugby by the same rule book. KFC and Macca`s both deliver fastfood, Ford and Holden both run on the same basic technologies but get you where you need to be. The weather should be similar here as anywhere else. One saying it will rain and another saying it wont or another predicting opposite to the others dosn`t appease any audience I know of

The point is, choose the one

We and other forecasters play by the same rule book - but we have different outcomes. The point is, choose the one that is most accurate to you. If one says rain and one did not, then clearly one was wrong or not accurate enough for you. We have different audiences, we communicate using different words, we interpret data in different ways. we use different computers to work it out. No forecaster is 100% accurate - so you choose the one you find more accurate, it may be us it may not be. WeatherWatch exists because we have independent forecasts which sometimes are different to others and this difference is precisely why the New Zealand Government & rural clients hire us for rain forecasting during droughts and dry events.

All the best,

WW

Pukekohe wind direction Tuesday

Hi. Wanting to burning tree clippings on Tuesday, semi rural Pukekohe, and don't want smoke for the neighbours. Looks like NE possible. Can you confirm/advise wind direction please. Original follower since your inception and always reliable and more specific that you know who. Many thanks, Marcus.

Hey Marcus, :) thanks for the

Hey Marcus, :) thanks for the loyalty and positive feedback!

Light winds and sea breezes on Tuesday mean any wind direction is possible at some point, NE and SW often battle it out on a calm day to dominate. You may want to wait until a breeze starts to kick in during late morning to get a feel for which way it is going. A nor'west flow arrives overnight Tues/into Weds and picks up across Wednesday.

Cheers
