I see the NZ Herald has gone

I see the NZ Herald has gone off the deep end again with the headline "Days of rain, gales and snow poised to slam New Zealand". Seems very dramatic given neither you or MS seem to be predicting days of such severe weather. Their standard of weather reporting has really dropped away and you are well rid of them and I put much more faith in your level headed approach.

Hi there, thank you. We

Hi there, thank you. We explicitly told the NZ Herald in an interview on Sunday that this would not bring days of severe weather. However the tabloid approach seems to be their new way. Thanks for the supportive feedback - we tell anyone who sees a 'big' or alarming weather story in any of the more mainstream news outlets to simply double check with WeatherWatch as 9 times out of 10 we usually have a second opinion that is a little calmer or at least clearer.

Kind regards
Philip Duncan

Argh, it's all about the clicks

Getting people clicking onto tabloid stories is easy, its all about the numbers. But creating a long term fan base is the ultimate goal. And these tabloid stories irritate me to no end (one lost fan). I wonder if the weather can sue for defamation? If there is no evidence of large storms and they are bleating it...doesn't sound fair to me. Giving weather a bad name!

If you believe the NZH then

If you believe the NZH then Noah better start getting the Ark ready.

More of those clicks

NZH this morning: "vast swathes of New Zealand are set to be drenched as a complex low conjures up days of rain, gales and even snow". Sounds a bit overdramatic but will get the clicks.

Saturday - Rugby

Hey team How's the forecast looking for this Saturday in Auckland? Any chance of a fast track for Saturday night at Eden Park?

At this stage it looks as

At this stage it looks as though the centre of the low is tracking east by Saturday night - that should bring in a rather windy and cold (and showery) sou'wester for Auckland and Eden Park. We won't be able to lock in Saturday's forecast possibly until as late as Friday though, due to the unstable nature of this big low. Hopefully the worst will be gone by then though! :)

Cheers

Thank you so much for your very accurate weather forecasts. Saturday was perfect, the move went very well, and it was even considered warm enough for one of the team to enjoy a swim!! (not me LOL) Thank you again WW Team. D.

No worries, sunny weather is

No worries, sunny weather is generally the easiest to get right though :D

Glad the move went well.

Hi there

I can't really answer a question like that accurately but statistically I would say you have a very low to no chance of having any snow this winter.

Hope that helps! :D

Whangamata Rainfall - year to date

Have you guys got any data on how much rainfall has fallen in Whangamata for the calendar year to date and what the average for the year to date would be? Cal

Hi there Re rainfall, no

Hi there

Re rainfall, no sorry. Unfortunately that information will be tied up with NIWA or you could use Metservice.

Hope your search for information is fruitful! Best to get in touch with one of the above groups :)

Hi there. Just a heads up

Hi there. Just a heads up your Chateau Tongariro/Whakapapa Village forecasts temps are constantly 2-3 degrees higher than what occurs. I guess it doesnt take into account the elevation the township is it (1200m)

Hey, thanks so much for the

Hey, thanks so much for the update. The data should be understanding the elevation as all WU data takes into consideration the geography and history. In saying that, if you think the forecast temperatures are really missing the mark we can definitely pass that on to WU to look into it. The issue we have in New Zealand (unlike Australia, Canada, USA, UK etc) is that our Government forecaster - in this case MetService - will not release data the taxpayers fully fund and own which then makes it so much trickier for everyone to make more accurate forecasts (as this data helps to check and verify).  In saying that, the data we use has seveal dozen super computers crunching numbers so generally they are more accurate than NIWA (with one super computer) and MetService (with no super computer). An inaccurate trend of warmer than usual in the forecasts isn't normal though - so we will look into that for you.

Cheers and thank you for telling us!

Thanks for the reply. Its not a big deal really, cause usually i can take 2 degrees off that forecast and it will be fine :) Thanks for the reply :)

weather prediction

Hi, can you tell me the travel forecast for the next 24/48 hours between Dunedin, the Wanaka Pass and Franz Josef? I need to decide whether it's worth the long trip or not Thanks

Hi there - today may be a no

Hi there - today may be a no go with snow falling to low levels over the ranges and highways and ice likely overnight.  The good news is that on Wednesday conditions should clear/ease across the day (but again with snow/ice/black ice) you should be aware of NZTA Highway conditions before you set out.

The weather isn't perfect next 48 hours but tomorrow, especially from Noon, looks better than today does!

Ground frost

How do I calculate likelihood of ground frost at my location, for a given day?

Hi there. Tricky to answer

Hi there. Tricky to answer but generally if the air temperature (or overnight low) is forecast to be 3 degrees or lower there is a risk of frost (as the air is colder at the ground than where we measure air temperatures). If a calm cold night then frosts can start to form below 3 degrees, certainly below 1 with no wind.

Timing of Forecasts

Hi, I really like your site but I am often looking for the most recent prediction. I can't find anywhere that indicates when the forecast was made and when your next update is due. Cheers Rick

Hi there Rick, thanks very

Hi there Rick, thanks very much. Our WeatherUnderground forecasts (which have the WU logo next to each one/day) are updated hourly. The main centre forecasts for 5 days out from us at WeatherWatch (which have the WW logo and blue background shading) are frequently updated across the day. During severe weather events we may update places like Auckland and Dunedin as much as several times in just one hour. On quieter days there will be several updates across the day (with the hourly WU forecasts within them updated hourly still). In one way or another our forecasts are basically continually updating.

In the 6 main centres (ones in yellow on the map on our homepage) we also try to update more often when demand for our forecasts increase - ie, if thunderstorms are around, or fog, or especially heavy rain.

Cheers

Auckland weather

Morning, do you think i'll need a rain coat for the game at eden park tonight?

Hi there - very good

Hi there - very good question!! There's a chance of a shower, definitely, but the good news is that any shower activity looks very isolated by then.  We'll fine tune the Auckland Evening forecast a couple more times today before 4pm so check again perhaps after lunch and again around 5pm.

All the best!

Auckland fog

I'm wanting to get some morning fog photos in the coming weeks and have noticed heavy fog over the recent weeks in Auckland near mangere and favona going to morning trainings at about 6:00. What are the conditions that would bring this about so I can look for them to get up early? Do you expect the trend of foggy mornings to continue or decrease as we head into winter? Cheers

Hi there Generally speaking

Hi there

Generally speaking Autumn is the best time of year for fog but it can occur any time should the conditions suit. As we get towards the end of this month fog chances will become a little less but as I've mentioned above it can occur any time of year.

For the foreseeable future conditions are not looking very fog friendly, it's not to say you won't get a few little isolated patches or areas of mist over the next night or two but those type of conditions can be a lot more localised. I'm referring to the absolute blanketing of Auckland in fog for example.

Basically you need clear skies and high humidity. Sometimes as broad low pressure systems float over in the night, they can bring light winds and clear skies in their centre, high humidity too so then you can get fog. High pressure where the airflow around the high has tended to the north or northeast (a very light airflow) can bring fog too if skies are looking clear as night falls.

Hopefully you can get a fog photo or two this winter, good luck!

Aaron

Winter predictions?

Hi guys, want to say first off what an awesome weather site you have, spot on forecasts and what a great site to allow you to ask questions about forecasts and weather in general. Thanks for all your hard work. I want to ask if you have any general predictions about winter in the South Island, I know your not psychic but is their a general feeling of what it may be like. Thanks

H there. Firstly thank you so

H there. Firstly thank you so much for the kind words and support, it really means a lot to our small team! Secondly, we're actually putting out a story this morning about winter so watch our news page before 12noon today.

Muriwai

Lots of heavy rain this evening in Muriwai! Our water tanks and gutters are well and truly over flowing!

weekend

Reason WHY the local news are saying were in for WET AND WINDY weekend bank holiday? Since for Auckland it is showing sunny days from Sunday? I beg to differ on your forecast so what is the truth?

Bank holiday?

Bank holiday?

old fashioned term for

old fashioned term for statutory holiday because banks are "closed".

Hi there. Not sure what

Hi there. Not sure what you're asking us - getting your forecast from the news media isn't something we'd suggest. The "truth" is whatever Mother Nature delivers and luckily there are a range of forecasters you can choose from to work out the most likely forecast - or, in the case of this weekend it's not a 100% easy forecast to give - so hard to lock in. Most news media in New Zealand, however, all pay to use one source and that is the Government owned MetService.

Cheers

WW

3:45pm Monday edit --- Sunday was lovely and sunny and calm, Monday was mostly sunny and dry apart from one dawn shower and a couple late afternoon showers but no wind - as per our forecasting almost precisely. No one else in NZ had this forecast for Auckland. We're not perfect, but hopefully you can see where we "shine" Cheers :)

Winter Snow

With more sub tropical air influencing NZ during June do you see an increased chance of a heavy South Island snow dump?

Hey there,It all depends on

Hey there,
It all depends on timing. If a wintry southerly hits a sub-tropical rainmass it can cause a major snow event that dumps over a metre of snow. However timing matters - it can make the difference between this occuring over the South Island, Noth Island or both - or if the timing is out you may end up with just the cold southerly which is fairly dry, or the wet warm sub-tropical air flow. But if they meet in the middle over NZ we can get very heavy snow.

Cheers

Winter temperatures 2017

Hi there - do you have any indications of likely winter chill forecast. We grow kiwifruit and had low flowering due to a warm (mild) winter in 2016. We are in Golden Valley Waihi and are at 220m above sea level, face north and are near the coast (Mataora Bay). Hope you can offer any insights. Keep up the great work. Geoff Bright Mataora Bay Orchard Landlyst Road Waihi

Hi there Geoff, thanks for

Hi there Geoff, thanks for the kind words and the question/info.  At this stage the wetter than normal Autumn has lead to warmer than average conditions, although perhaps not quite as warm as last year?  The forecast is a messy one - with no El Nino or La Nina the weather pattern is currently what we class as "chaotic". Sub-tropical one day, sub-Antarctic the next. In the past couple months alone we've had a few ex-cyclones and an Antarctic blast.  Our general feeling is that northern NZ (where you are especially) may see more of this warmer than average pattern. While winter temperatures are now "setting in" to Southland, the upper North Island won't be seeing the same cold due to lows and winds blowing through.  Sorry we can't be more specific but a "chaotic" pattern (oxymoron!) is showing the weather coming in from all 4 directions. June looks to be a colder version of May but equally as changeable with more sub-tropical air flows expected. We aim to have more winter (or at least June) details on Thursday or Friday.

Cheers - and all the best for the season ahead

Database

Hi there, I was wondering if you have a database of the accumulative weather in Hamilton and Queenstown from the past two months, that I would be able to have access to for a school weather project? Thanks, Holly

Hi Holly, sadly we aren't

Hi Holly, sadly we aren't allowed to display tax funded data. Luckily the Government is now investigating NIWA and MetService's misuse of public data. In the meantime, you will need to contact NIWA or MetService directly.  The Government Minister in charge of the data review (Paul Goldsmith) is now making a decision on the future accessibility of data we all collectively fund and own. We hope he makes a decision that allows us to share data (like every other western nation on earth) before the end of winter.

Good luck
