Snow in Dunedin

Travelling form Auckland to Dunedin for National Basketball Championships next week. What is the likelihood of seeing snow? How many layers of clothing would we need, do you think we should buy gloves?

You should see snow if you're

You should see snow if you're driving the entire way, especially around Central Plateau and the South Island ranges (depending on the weather at the time). Next week starts off far more settled - but Dunedin is pretty cold. Keep an eye on our 10 day Dunedin forecasts, it has hourly temperatures for every day too so you can work out how cold it will be and what clothes you'll need...but prepare for highs in the single digits!

NZH at it again. Today's

NZH at it again. Today's headline screams "Four days of hell: worst storm of year bears down on New Zealand" and states in the article that "rain, snow and gales set to batter much of New Zealand". On Sunday you said it wasn't a storm and proceeded to explain in very calm and clear terms exactly what you were expecting. Again you have shown a level of professionalism that is sadly lacking in the NZH these days. Well done.

Thanks very much. New

Thanks very much. New Zealand's largest tablod now jumps for the biggest headlines with every weather event and they work almost exclusively now with MetService to do this. In fact not only do MetService not correct them publicly ever (as they are a client) but MetService provides links to click back to these over the top tabloid stories via MetService.com. So therefore there isn't much we can do about it, other than provide a clear and calm second opinion which is becoming increasibly trusted as the others go for clickbait.

Thanks for your kind and thoughtful message,
Cheers

shame really, shabby little tabloids, the Heralds partner is crime, the Otago Daily Tabloid was known (presume they still do as their clickbait sometimes shows up on Metservice) for sensationalism in the same way, and they wonder tabloid readership is plummeting If nothing else Metservice is driving a few extra people your way :) Hopefully your reports for Otago (Dunedin/ Queenstown) might get a little more accurate when resource allows

Hi there Hard to say right

Hi there

Hard to say right now what will be happening then. Current indications are it may be quite wet rather then snow as such although that's not to say snow might not fall, it just might be on Wed / Thu then some heavy rain moves in on Friday.

Details may have to be ironed out closer to the time, when you leave check out this site here for road conditions: https://www.aa.co.nz/travel/roadwatch/

Hi there, I was wondering what the roads will be like as going on holiday from Dunedin to otematata on Wednesday morning. Thanks

Hi there, at this stage

Hi there, at this stage there's a fairly high chance of heavy snow throughout Otago on Tuesday and/or Wednesday with most highways getting snow somewhere along the route. Very hard to know if that particular route will be impacted. You'll need to keep up to date with NZTA at the time of travelling. Sorry we can't be more specific than that. We'll have more details on Monday about the set up this coming week.

There's lots of them but I gather they aren't regulated or standardized?

Not to WMO (World

Not to WMO (World Meteorological Organization) standards no but we don't have much option as Metservice / NIWA block off their data from being used despite it being funded by tax payer dollars.

So unless there is a spare half mill lying around to establish a network somewhere it will have to do for now, most of the information is pretty good and reliable in saying that but yes there is the odd rouge station that is not right. If you click on it though you'll see a "bad data" link which over time will hopefully reduce the frequency of stations giving off false readings with help from members of the public.

Weather for Rotorua 13/07/17

Hi WW, Please just me an idea of what the weather will be like in Rotorua 13/07/17? Still deciding whether I stay there for a day or 2 so I could book my ticket back to Auckland. Thanks in advance.

Hi there - keep an eye on the

Hi there - keep an eye on the 10 day forecast we have for Rotorua which you can see here. It includes the % of rain and hourly forecasts for those days and will be the most accurate guide. At this stage a low will be over the area and rain looks likely, but there are some dry areas. That 10 day data will be the best to monitor. Good luck!

Plenty of dry weather what a

Plenty of dry weather what a joke there has been nothing but rain in South Auckland this morning which hasn't stopped absolutely fed up with it when are we going to get some decent sunny weather without any rain or showers? My car has about 4 layers of dirt on it and needs a wash.

Rain in winter?

What next...The All Black losing...

Yeah the showers are

Yeah the showers are certainly more frequent in South Auckland this morning - hopefully a drier afternoon and evening on the way though. As for a long dry spell - it's tough finding one to be seriously honest! There is some chance late next week or weekend that a high may cross northern NZ bringing dry weather for a few days. However it's too early to know if it will be sunny as well (as sometimes in winter large highs bring low cloud into Auckland...known as 'anticyclonic gloom').

Looks like some big downpours coming into your area over the next hour or so but then hopefully the "plenty of dry weather" comes in for you for the rest of the day...until towards midnight when the next rain band comes in!

Cheers

Really cold down south

Good very early morning WW Team Just want to say thanks for a job well done on weather reporting. Your long range forecasting is very bang on and has helped me to plan for next week's start to Semester 2 at Otago Uni. (Yes, I'm in Dunedin). I left the Winterless North to be down here to attend Uni and let me tell you, the weather patterns are HUGELY different. Very cold, indeed!!! As I write this, the temp is MINUS 8.9 degrees. Yes, I'm awake at 2 in the AM. Someone had to put the heater on. Hahaha. Anyway, you folks are my go to weather team. Keep up the awesome job. You all rock!!! From a frozen Uni student. (Not really. My flat's really awesome. Haha)

Good early morning right back

Good early morning right back to ya! Welcome to Dunedin :) It's been cold alright, but can go even colder in Dunedin at times than the past few days have been! Thanks for the kind feedback - especially about the accuracy of our forecasts and long range forecasts. It's great to know. Dunedin is a tricky city to forecast for, quite possibly the hardest in NZ, so there's always work to be done to improve. Stay warm, stay near that heater and thanks for your support, it means heaps to us. Good luck for the rest of the year at Uni!

Cheers

WW

I really don't think that

I really don't think that -8.9 ever happened, the cbd weather station hasn't recorded anything below +1 overnight in the last 30 days your forecasts for Dunedin do seem to often be a bit wide of the mark, but I can see some of the reasons may be that the suburbs spreads far and wide from near sea level to over 400 metres high in the hills and coastal fringes to inland valleys

Weather for Nightcaps Western southland

Can you give me the forecast for our area for Tues and Wed [10th @11th] July please will we see any snow at our location Thanks Wayne

Hi there Apologies missed

Hi there

Apologies missed this earlier. Do you mean the 11th and 12th?

Nightcaps looks to be roughly somewhere around 180m above sea level, so taking that into consideration. A burst of rain moves through on Tuesday morning as a front pushes through, there may be some heavy snow for a time but it could be just above Nightcaps in the surrounding hills / ranges. 10 to 15cm down to 400 or perhaps 300m. It is borderline though so there may be some reasonable snow just reach you for a time on Tuesday morning then precipitation eases back to the odd shower, the air does get colder so I would expect a few snow flurries from afternoon, on and off till early Wednesday morning. The stuff from Tuesday afternoon onwards is not heavy but could at most deliver 3 to 5cm between then and early Wednesday. Due to the on / off nature of any low level snow flurries (200m and lower) not much may accumulate due to periods of melting between flurries etc....

Hope that helps!

Aaron

Great forecasting

High the top guns at WeatherWatch. You folks with your web site are really THE BEST available in NZ. I had been relying on MetService.com for my forecasts (I have small animals.....lots of Guinea Pigs, rabbits and rats...whitch are affected by extremes of weather and found MetService to be very retro in their forecasts...they were telling me to expect what had already happened. Also their thrice daily updates ment a lot of events could happen between forecasts and I would often have rain when it was not expected.. Between the maps function on the iPad app and the web site I get a pretty accurate account of what is happening and will happen. So I have gone from relying on MetService to relying on you guys and so far i am totally impressed. Best regards Ross Lora Herbert 9495 Oamaru

Hi there Ross, thank you so

Hi there Ross, thank you so much for the detailed and very kind email. WeatherWatch was developed because the New Zealand public desperately wanted an alternative to the Government forecaster. We've had to grow our brand with absolutely no support from the NZ Government (hard to even exist at times) and through growing partnerships here in NZ and overseas. Our biggest goal is to try and help people that really feel like their current provider isn't focused on them. We wish we had the resources to do an even better job in smaller places like Oamaru and we hope in time we can do so. For now we're trying to get the Government to allow us access to data we all already collectively tax fund - as this would help us fine tune things even further and really improve some of the services we can provide.

Sadly (and incredibly) the sales people at NIWA and MetService are using tax funded lawyers to stop us doing this - the Government is now reviewing why NZ is the only western country on earth to make the sales people & managers at Government Agency's MetService & NIWA the gatekeepers to data that is totally funded by the taxpayer and owned by the Government. Imagine if there were people at NZTA who could ban you from driving on certain roads if they didn't like you? Well we're banned from using weather data we collectively tax fund because certain Government Agencies don't want the competition. Like the old days when Telecom owned the copper wire network and stopped other telcos from expanding and providing better phone services at lower rates. Like with Telecom the set up was wrong and gave all the power to a Government Agency which stopped competition. The Government is now dragging its heels on this review after telling us in March they were "frustrated" how long it was taking to complete. That's an election year for you - very little transparency at all with the NZ Government and so called "independent reviews".

Thanks for your kind email - it makes a huge difference to us to know that we're helping people all over the country, especially those who aren't in the major centres.

Have a great weekend - hope it wasn't too cold for you this morning!
Cheers

Over it!

Is this the wettest Winter on record in Auck? House flooded 3x in March/April, now tonight after the torrential 5pm downpour, my shop is flooded...hail like snow blocked the drains in Howick and we watched it go over curbs and into shops, raising 15cm in less than 4 minutes. Crazy!. Must be new records for Auck?

Hi there - wow so sorry to

Hi there - wow so sorry to hear your shop has been flooded on top of your house in March and April. Auckland has certainly had a lot of torrential/heavy rain events since our dry summer ended. Unsure about records being broken as Auckland has quite a history of dramatic downpours but quite possibly the total of rain we've been seeing since March has broken some records. The end of year weather review from NIWA will be very interesting to see what stats were broken.

Cheers - and here's to a nice big anticyclone coming towards NZ later next week we hope!

Dry summer

Haha we didn't have a dry summer in Auckland at all! I wish we had :(

Rain

I am seriousley over this rain in auckland we get 2fine days and 5 rain days cant get any work done to tidy up garden when is this ongoing cycle likely to end ?

Later next week a southerly

Later next week a southerly kicks in (much drier) and then a large high *should* be arriving for next Friday or weekend...bringing some very very very overdue sunny/dry weather. We will focus on this in our news updates early next week :) Oh and hopefully even Saturday may have plenty of dry weather too....um...before the next rain :)

- WW

Winter weather

What are your thoughts on a possible cold outbreak next week?

Our thoughts currently are

Our thoughts currently are there may be a cold outbreak next week :)

Not much to say right now but as we get closer to the time in question watch for stories here on the website or Phil's videos for further information.

It looks quite southwesterly so may not mean much for inland areas of the South Island, air does look quite cold though. Still, this could change, will have to wait and see.

rugby test match

How is the weather for the game on 8/7/17

Hi there, probably the best

Hi there, probably the best thing to do is check our hourly forecasts for that day and focus on the % of rain trend over the afternoon and evening...then keep an eye on that (and our forecast surrounding it) over the next few days. At this stage it looks like showers with some patchy rain developing in the evening (not as wet as Wellington was) - there's a chance Saturday could be mainly dry too, so definitely still a forecast we're still fine tuning.

FOG

Hi there is there any chance of heavy fog in the Auckland central area anytime in the next week?

Hi there. Calm conditions

Hi there. Calm conditions overnight tonight and into Wednesday morning *may* produce fog, there is certainly some chance on Wednesday. Other than that it looks as though the winds are picking up and as we head into the weekend and as we go to next week it gets windier still by the looks of it, at least for the first few days.

Heavy rain started 5:12 PM in New Lynn. Easterley!

Humidity

Hi there, Why is queenstown so humid even when it's not raining? I thought that cold environments are meant to have drier air? People seem to talk about needing more moisturiser in QT as skin dries out with the cold dry air so now I'm confused? Thanks :)

G'day there The realitive

G'day there

The realitive humidity is high yes however its just that, it's the humidity in the air relative to the air temperature which is quite cold. So it's actually not very humid at all down there. A slightly better way to measure humidity is the dewpoint temperature. Queenstown currently has a dewpoint of only 0.7C which is quite low, conditions start to feel humid when the dewpoint is up around 12 to 15 degrees, mind you that can be a little relative also as in Auckland dewpoint temperatures around there may be typical in summer. Your really humid conditions are 18 to 19 degree dewpoints northwards however Queenstown would rarely if ever see figures like that.

Here is a map of forecasted dewpoint temperatures around NZ at midnight:

Wicked wind in Dunedin today

WOW it was much windier in Dunedin than the forecasted 4.8 km/hr easterlies. Cold as and the froat didn't melt off the city streets until afternoon. I hope Saturday will be better. Thank you anyway WW Team. You're the greatest and most accurate. AC

Hmm, I think we had 25 km/h

Hmm, I think we had 25 km/h ENE winds for Dunedin yesterday in our forecast. That's average speed mind you, gusts could well have been higher. But yes it did look to be windier then 4.8 km/h I would say!

Unfortuanately looking like showers or rain from afternoon on Saturday.

Thanks heaps for the kind words, we try :)

Thanks very much for the update, much appreciated. The wind has been tricky for us today in both Hamilton and Dunedin (Hamilton was supposed to get a breeze, it didn't - and you weren't supposed to be as bad as that!). We were actually just speaking to someone in Dunedin yesterday and said how it's the hardest of the 6 main centres to forecast for. We're working hard to find ways to improve our Dunedin/Otago forecasts - hopefully we can make something happen this year to make our forecasts even more accurate. Thanks for your support and kind words!
