Hi there

Hmm not really from what I can see, perhaps on Saturday next week but that's quite a fair way off. If any polar blasts are looking likely we'll make a note of it in terms of news stories / articles / weather videos. Keep an eye out! :)

Hi, I have been wondering why the current temperature data for Dunedin is being fetched from Patearoa. I would imagine the temperature difference between Dunedin and Patearoa would be significantly different.

Hi there

Just scroll down the page a little and you'll see some recent questions regarding exactly this, we're waiting on others to sort this issue unfortunately for the most part.

where will the driest sunniest place be near auckland

Hi there, I have a friend visiting from Australia, we live in Auckland, where will be the driest sunniest place to take them in North Island, seems like Whangarei will be a good bet?

Hi there, generally speaking

Hi there, generally speaking eastern areas (yes like Whangarei) will be driest/sunnies overall. Eastern Northland, eastern Coromandel etc. However sunniest/warmest weather may be further away in Hawke's Bay.

Good luck!

Dunedin

Hi, As we are all aware the location of the data for Dunedin is incorrect but I was wondering, which Dunedin station should I use for the most accurate information, as there are dozens? Cheers

Hi there, we know that the US

Hi there, we know that the US forecasters are aware of the data fault in Dunedin's current and hourly forecasts - but our blue WW forecasts are still accurate.  We have 1500 locations so the best bet for Dunedin is to search for a suburb and that should address this. We've sent another email today to Wunderground.  The good news is that we are shifting forecast data before the year is done - from Wunderground to The Weather Company and this should also improve things.  SO in the meantime the 'fix' is to simply bookmark a Dunedin suburb or somewhere nearby like Port Chalmers and you'll get a much better feeling. Again we're really sorry we have this glitch affecting one of our main centres - we're doing our best to urgently get it fixed.

Thank you
Philip Duncan

Hey there WW Team Good to

Hey there WW Team Good to hear The Weather Company is coming on board. My best advice for the weather in Dunedin is to pack one of everything in ye olde school bag, (no room for the books. Hahaha) and look at Weatherwatch on ya phone every 15 minutes or so. Now you know what some of us students are gazing at when we walk. & stare at our phones. LOL Keep up the awesomeness, Philip and Team!!!

Thanks

Thank you for the reply, it's good to know you're onto it!

Forecast

What is the best place to seek forecasts for Waimamaku?

Hi there, we have 10 day

Hi there, we have 10 day forecasts for Waimamaku here.

For a smaller area like Waimamaku we suggest you use the hourly forecasts rather than just the daily forecast. The hourly information for temperature, wind direction/speed and % chance of rain will likey be more accurate than the general text forecast or the daily icon during weeks like this one (with a big low moving in). Try these hourly forecasts along with our weather videos and 7am/5pm InfoGraphics in our news feed and it should give you a really good idea as to what to expect.

martinborough forecast

Hi, I just checked the forecast for this evening (called up at 6pm) for Martinborough and it defaulted to Wairarapa and only said 'showers possible early'.Not wind forecast either. It seemed like half a forecast, and when is 'early' when viewing a forecast at 6pm? Does it mean early evening or what? thanks

G'day there The forecast will

G'day there

The forecast will be for Martinborough, it's just the regional summary at the top that is for Wairarapa as a whole, all the day parts and tonight, tomorrow etc etc will be for Martinborough.

If there seems to be a slight lack of information in the txt (description) then scroll down the page just a fraction and you'll see hour by hour "Next 24 Hours" forecasts which show wind information and rain percentages etc, that should give you the information you need.

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Hi guys, We live at Porangahau, for some reason your forecast summary gives us the Manawatu instead of the Hawkes Bay summary?? Otherwise, appreciate your accuracy, fantastic thanks! Megan.

Hi there

This is something we’ve raised with Wunderground. It doesn’t impact the accuracy of their forecasts but the electoral boundaries aren’t perfectly aligned. This will be sorted later this year. :)

Queenstown

We are hoping for a polar blast while we are on holiday in Queenstown 10 - 15 August, i believe these events are common this time of year?

Yes they are fairly common

Yes they are fairly common but they are very frequent - so timing is everything. It's too far out to lock in but at this early stage there is no cold blast around then (but about 7 days out you can check our Queenstown forecasts for more detail).

Cheers and have a great holiday in Queenstown :)

Windy as in Dunedin

Good morning WW Team. I looked at your forecast for Dunedin because the wind is really howling it up out there. Your indication is E 0 km/hr. Not according to the cat. He came in all windblown and angry with me for chucking him outside "in the middle of a tornado ". (HIS words. Hahahaha). Could you please let me know what the real wind speed is in Dunners for the day? Cheers and here's to not getting blown away. (the cat, too. Hahaha)

G'day thereThat wind speed

G'day there

That wind speed you are looking at is the current NOW information I'm thinking? It's a bit out of place that information, a report has been logged.

Most winds I'm seeing around Dunedin at the moment are sub 10 km/h. However high up it might be windier in the hill suburbs I'm picking? Winds should ease this morning and tend southerly and mostly stay around the 10 to 15 km/h range.

Apologies to the moggie, lol.

The "Now" temperature

Hi I really like your weather forecasts and find them the most accurate and informative and they are my go-to website for weather info.. However, there is one thing about the "Now" temperature for Dunedin. On close examination I note that it is actually the current temperature at Patearoa which is inland Otago and a fair step from Dunedin. The "today" and "tonight" details I take to relate to Dunedin and I used to assume the "now" detail did too until one day it was so patently incorrect that I looked closely and noticed that it wasn't for Dunedin at all. Surely Weatherwatch has a temperature station for Dunedin closer than Patearoa? I'e just checked the Metservice website for Dunedin and they're showing current temp 7.6 feels like 6 while according to Wetherwatch in Dunedin (well Patearoa actually) it's 4.3!! Why do you do this? Thanks and regards

Hi therePhil replied to a

Hi there

Phil replied to a comment exactly like this 6 days ago, this is what he said:

Hi there - we have just recently logged this serious issue with Wunderground. Most other centres are accurate but for some reason Dunedin's current reading is incorrect. We're fixing a few other small bugs with boundaries in other regions but the data pulled from Patearoa is definitely incorrect and we're working hard and quickly with Wunderground to immediately get this sorted. The fault also occurs on the WU website itself too, so that's helpful as it means their techs can see it and work to address it. We don't have an ETA on when this will be resolved but we hope fairly soon now that we've spoken to WU about it.

The app will find your nearest reading and in time we're working to add "change this station" so you can manually choose the one you feel is most accurate for you (as you know Dunedin has a real variety of weather within the city and airport - temperatures can range by several degrees at the same time - or like last week some had snow while others had sun!

Thanks for the feedback and information, we'll pass this on to WU as well. Apologies for the fault - and thanks for sticking with us :)

"Now"

Very many thanks for this explanation. I appreciate your prompt reply and look forward to Wunderground fixing it soon. Despite that little glitch WW still far and away the most reliable forecast and the one I rely on and in addition it is also a really interesting and informative site with lots of interesting weather related items too. Keep up the good work - we do value it. Thanks and regards

Hi there, thanks so much! We

Hi there, thanks so much! We are looking at some significant changes to our current observations to bring them more inline with 'industry standard' later this year (we hope!). It's a shame the NZ Government through MetService and NIWA make it impossible for us to share already tax funded data in real time. It seems the review the Government was working on has been thrown in a dark cupboard due to the election. So much for transparency!

Thanks heaps for your support!

Hi, What are the chances of getting snow on Thursday and Friday in Dunedin? Thanks

G'day there

Thursday I would say no, perhaps a tiny chance on Friday morning before that system clears away. Mostly I would say not much chance currently.

Why oh why have you been

Why oh why have you been quoted in the news calling this low a "death spiral"? I thought you were against sensationalism in the media? I think you must be a step too far removed from the reality of the situation if you think calling it a "death spiral" is a joke. Now I haven't heard of any deaths, but it certainly wouldn't be funny if there were. People die due to the weather in New Zealand relatively frequently, and it isn't a laughing matter. Those of us who have been having to deal with the consequences of the weather would prefer that a weather service gave us useful information via the media, for example how much more rain is expected and when it will stop, so we can go back home. It is a serious situation and the language used should reflect that. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please cut the fanciful, overly-sensationalised clap next time please. It does NOT help my anxiety about the situation.

If you read the lead story we

If you read the lead story we have it's a very considered piece - the description is actually to point out the storm is dying. The fact the tabloids are taking something small from the end of a press release and headlining it is something you should take up with them. The low is actually tearing itself apart and killing itself off (it's quite a normal saying to say a "storm is dying" or "the winds are dying off"). Nothing we said was in humour? Have zero idea where you got that from. It's quite a stunningly fast end to the life of this low considering yesterday it was such a major storm. If we were 'sensational' we would've headlined those words, or placed it at the lead of a story. Instead it's a small section at the end of all the details you specifically just asked for. In fact we've gone out of way to give great detail, updated frequently across the day and overnight here on this website - not for the media but for people like yourself. So we suggest if people have anxiety over the weather they should get their weather forecast directly from a weather website like ours (and MetService) and not from a tabloid news outlet and what they choose to cherry pick to headline for clicks.

Kind regards and thanks for taking the time to write in.
- WW

Thanks for the explanation,

Thanks for the explanation, sorry I thought it was a quote over the phone, the article made it sound like they had spoken to you directly. I go to media outlets because they pull together info from weather forecasters as well as civil defence, road closures etc. Certainly journalists can be irresponsible, they should have linked the original article if they took it from an article. I saw it on the Herald website, I think I won't be using their website again. In saying that though, maybe it is worth remembering this case in future as things can easily be taken out of context, and a phrase like "death spiral" certainly sounds dramatic. So it is probably one to avoid if you don't want a journalist to jump on it. Granted you shouldn't HAVE to pander to journalists, but unfortunately journalists are not held accountable and therefore these things happen. More to the point: when will it stop raining in Christchurch? We are stuck here and would like to go back home to Timaru but that looks unlikely to happen in the near future. Thanks for replying and apologies again for assuming it was a direcr quote rather than bad journalism.

Hi there - it's totally ok!

Hi there - it's totally ok! Seriously :) We get quite a few people who read/hear things in the mainstream news and they get the wrong end of the stick and write to us unhappy. The media have been great at covering the damage and road closures and council warnings etc from this event - they offer the public a terrific service. But when they get into the forecasting side of things we often get big headlines because, let's all face it, quite a few of our news brands have become tabloids. We use words/terms like that carefully and sparingly. Part of the reason for our growth as a brand is that we explain things in understandable ways. Sometimes there is creativity to help people understand in their heads how these systems works. Storms are often personalised - it's why Tropical Storms started being given human names, as it helps with understanding storms more/making them stand out/easier to track etc. Really appreciate you taking the time to write in, we do take all the comments seriously even when we push back sometimes. As for Christchurch - some good news - it appears the heaviest rain may be now showing signs of easing. Even some dry spells coming in. Should improve tonight. Keep an eye on our news feed, we've been live updating all day about the weather around Otago and Canterbury (and also via our Twitter and Facebook pages).

Have a good night - hope you get to go back to Timaru soon, it's great to see the Army stepping in to help.

Cheers
WW

Thanks again for your replies

Thanks again for your replies and explanations. It does help to hear your replies after seeing the scare tactics that the media use when taking your words out of context - it worked on me! It is difficult while we are up here, we'd love to get home so we can make sure our home and neighbours are okay. I am happy to hear that the heaviest rain is over. I will be keeping an eagle eye on your newsfeed now instead of other news sites, as we are really keen to get the right info so we can get home asap. Thanks again.

Wet, wet, wet in. Dunedin

Hey. WW Team Come down to Dunedin for a surf in the streets. I'm very tempted. Haha. Seriously, the streets look like rivers and it doesn't look like I'm going to the Uni Central Library for study. This is a good day to stay home. Books, tea, cat, heater, tonnes of rain. Who could ask for more. STAY SAFE out there. A.C.

Thanks very much for the

Thanks very much for the update AC! Hope you stayed dry (and the cat). Looks to be drying out now. Definitely a 'stay safe kinda day' but in saying that we understand the fascination with a surf down a flooded calm street (which clearly we definitely do not endorse!!). Enjoy the weather - and the drier Sunday! :)
