Local Forecasts

I have selected Kerikeri as my local forecast region and previously when I signed on to Weatherwatch is stayed on Kerikeri now if keeps going to Auckland.??

Hi there, thanks for letting us know. We'll take a look into this and see what is happening. We may have a follow up question or two so keep an eye here if we do :)  A couple we have now - what device are you using and what web brower are you using (Ie, Chrome, Safari, etc)

Cheers and thanks for letting us know.

Many thanks - our digital support is looking into this now and they also mentioned that when a location is saved as favourite your computer uses 'cookies' to remember the info - if a user is browsing our website on Chrome in "Incognito/Private Browsing mode" then it may not save details.

Rainfall for Mapua (Tasman district)

Do you keep historical records of rainfall for previous years?

Hi there For the most part

Hi there

For the most part no, you will have to contact NIWA or Metservice to get any of this information.

Good luck!

WW

!st truly cloudless day

An autumn day with skies of blue, the first cloudless sky as far as the eye can see. Fresh Southerly lovely in sheltered sunny spot!

Tropical storms

Hi Phil I see a couple more tropical storms are brewing around Vanuatu area at the moment. When they form there it is possible we may see a visit from at least one them. Hopefully the highs will keep them well to the north this time. We need a breather from all the rain! Cheers Dave

Looks like they are being

Looks like they are being kept away due to the high's yes and weather generally looking to come in from the west or southwest from now on for the foreseeable future.

Go here and scroll through these maps: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

We look at the same ones so you can see what we see, no lows coming down from the north at this stage :)

WW

- UPDATED REPLY 10:53am Tues: Latest guidance suggests this tropical low will fall apart but the remnants may well head south and combine with another rain maker. Click here to read more on this.

What's going on right now in Wellington?

How strong is the wind at Wellington Airport?

Lower Temperature

What has created the return to more autumnal temperatures in Auckland for the coming week?

We are heading towards winter

We are heading towards winter and it's autumn so it had to happen sooner or later :D

Less subtropical flows, more weather coming in from the south instead of the north. Depends how deep you want to get with the subject i.e. movement of anticyclones and lows etc....

I don't tend to analyize it too much and go with the flow, I can't change it. It's perhaps more of a climate type of question which would then normaly be directed at an outfit like NIWA.

Thanks for writing in!

Hi, why is the Dunedin

Hi, why is the Dunedin weather underground forecast coming from Patearoa which is around 135km away from Dunedin.

Hi there, hmm let us look

Hi there, hmm let us look into it. We do have a few issues where the REGIONAL box at the top is pulling forecasts from further afield, some local weather stations (in the Current box) are also not quite aligned to the nearest weather station. However the general Dunedin forecast should be 5 days from WeatherWatch and 5 days from WU - and all Dunedin based. Can you please upload a screenshot of the forecast you're using by either replying here, or simply emailing us privately at news@weatherwatch.conz and we can take a closer look for you.

Cheers

Metservice is forecasting

Metservice is forecasting gales in Auckland tonight - do you see that as a possibility? They can get a bit carried away with some of their forecasting.

have you actually put this

have you actually put this question to the source (MetService)? If you have reasons to doubt their forecast, why not raise it?

Not much point in doing that

Not much point in doing that because what they forecast is what they think - right or wrong (mainly wrong in their case). This way you get a second opinion (usually more realistic) to use as a comparison.

Odd statement you made there.

Odd statement you made there. Of course a company states what they think when working in an advisory capacity. Why would they state something they thought was wrong?

They might think it is right,

They might think it is right, but in reality they have been proven to be wrong too many times. The Metservice seem to be unreliable on a regular basis, so I always find a second opinion to be helpful when making plans that may be affected by weather events..

Hi there Brisk to strong

Hi there

Brisk to strong winds are likely from now including overnight, winds may gust to gale at times but the mean wind speed is most likely not to be a sustained gale.

That is our view currently :)

Lightning

Was sheets of lightning at 3:20am in N skies seen from New Lynn.

Dunedin snow

Anomaly

Hi, both Friday and Saturday claim Northeast winds in the headline but show no Northeast in the hourly breakdown. This makes a huge difference to West Coast surfers, choppy cross shore or smooth offshore. Which is it that you are predicting?

Hi there, do you mean west

Hi there, do you mean west coast of Auckland or the West Coast of the South Island?  Much of the North Island's west coast has Northerlies on Friday (NNW to N to NNE) generally speaking, tilting more NE on Saturday. Precise wind directions when the centre of a low is forming nearby becomes tricky...if the low forms a little one way or the other the wind direction could shift quite significantly.  Keep an eye on the wind maps we have, they are a great guide at showing wind direction and strength over the coming hours and days.

Cheers

WW

Hi, sorry, I meant Auckland

Hi, sorry, I meant Auckland West Coast surf beaches. Your explanation still did not answer the question however. You claim Northeast for the big picture but then show NO Northeast for any of the hourly breakdowns. You can't have it both ways. Surely to be consistent you should claim Northerly, with a disclaimer indicating possible variations to the east or west? It is a big commitment of time and money to travel out to Piha and I always check your wind forecasts before committing as I find them usually more reliable than the Surf forecasting sites. Please restore my faith!! Love your site tho--- daily visit with morning coffee is mandatory.

The Big Picture is a very

The Big Picture is a very general guide about weather headlines - it's not a specific forecast. It's about the news. The forecasts we have are the forecasts! So click on our Piha forecast and use our wind maps for the best wind forecasts we have.  You can have a nor'east flow over the country but locally have very different wind directions. The InfoGraphics we have are designed as a news story forecast to help people make sense of the over the top big headlines the mainstream media peddles in now - we get asked daily about it and these graphics have reduced that with people getting a clearer picture about what is happening.

Use our Auckand City forecasts for the most detail (the ones we write at WW) and then double check our specific Piha forecasts by Wunderground for a (hopefully) more fine tuned update on forecast speeds, directions. The wind maps are still some of the best to help for surfing through. Our Auckland forecast is helpful as a second opinion though.  Wouldn't suggest any surfer rely on our InfoGraphics other than for an interesting read with your morning coffee :)

Cheers
WW

Thanks for the detailed

Thanks for the detailed explanation and helpful advice for fine tuning the forecast. The discrepancies between the broad based InfoGraphic and your more specific locally tweaked forecasts I can accept. It was the discrepancies within your WW written local forecast that was concerning me. Claiming Northeast in the two panel daily forecast with no corresponding Northeast direction in the hourly breakdown. Happy to leave this alone now. Regards, Obsessive/Compulsive surfer. PS, can you recommend a weather therapist?!

Sometimes our detailed

Sometimes our detailed forecast overrides the Wunderground hourly data - we do our own thing, they do their own thing - but we rely on their data a lot and it's generally great. But sometimes it's not as fine tuned as we'd like so it takes someone manually tweaking it to make it better. When it comes to surfing I'd rely more on the data than our written forecasts, as we write for land and focus on that for the most part. Our general Auckland forecasts gives you a second opinion. We are also obsessive/compulsive - if you find a weather therapist let us know their contact details!!!

:)

Auckland sunset

Beautiful bright pink & orange sunset tonight NW fading fast. Been sundog in the W & beautiful clouds.

Typical NZ Herald Headline

Yet again we have another sensational headline that doesn't quite reflect the contents of the article: "East Coast told to brace for giant 4m waves as another large storm takes aim for New Zealand". Taking aim for NZ? Really?

Hi there, we have nothing to

Hi there, we have nothing to do with the NZ Herald anymore. Our entire stories this week have gone out of their way to say this low isn't taking direct aim for NZ but that it's likely to brush just offshore - so close enough to cause some concern. Dangerous rips, currents and big waves are expected along many east coast beaches for a time on Sunday and Monday. We can't control their approach to news so always come to us for a second opinion! :)
Cheers

WW

A good move on your part. The

A good move on your part. The Herald has really lowered it's standards in regard to weather stories and seem to be relying on sensational headlines rather than facts. You guys are by far the more realistic and reliable option.

Thank you so much - that's

Thank you so much - that's really good to hear as that is certainly our goal.

Cheers :)
- WW

Sub Tropical Storm?????

Sub Tropical Storm to brush past NZ. RUBBISH. It has NO rotation and the strongest winds only reach to 40km from the east. Surfs up? I don't believe you know what surf is. If the low develops properly maybe then we may see bigger seas. What a load of blow-hard hot air. Woeful media hype.

Some of the sets on the north

Some of the sets on the north east beaches were around a solid 6 foot! if not more on Monday. The waves did show up this time!

Hi there - the low hasn't

Hi there - the low hasn't even really developed yet. You may want to look at our videos or maps to get a better idea as to what is forming over the next 72 hours, because we forecast what is coming not just what is happening right this second.

Kind regards

WW

Much cooler

Much cooler in Auckland tonight. Great seeing the magnificent clouds go away. WW site doing a few strange things, when clicking on news from bottom of page. Gives a mainly blank page & throws everything to the left, then clickable options lead to main page as normal!

Wind

Was there an easterly wind in new plymouth on easter sunday night.

Hi there Not sure sorry,

Hi there

Not sure sorry, reliable records aren't available for Sunday night. I can see winds were a strong NW during the day. Monday saw winds go around to the SE, so that change could have occured overnight?? But I don't have that information specifically.

Metservice or NIWA for more detailed information :)

Cheers
Aaron

New plymouth

Hi can you please tell me if New Plymouth wind will be strong?

Hi there - hopefully the

Hi there - hopefully the worst is well to your east - not expecting severe winds, maybe some downpours, but generally too far east to cause you serious concerns we hope.

Cheers
WW

Is the worst over in Auckland?

The weather till now appear to be pretty mild in Auckland's North Shore. Does this mean the worst has passed or has it just been delayed?

Hi there, the winds have

Hi there, the winds have missed the city, they are definitely well out to sea and aren't likely to cause any major problems. Biggest downpours in the South East (Hunua Ranges) and out in the Gulf at this stage.  Auckland City not likely to be seriously impacted in our view. Our forecast is a lot more optimistic than others today (just updated it too!)

Cheers
WW

Closing Ak Harbour Bridge

There's talk of strong winds forcing possible closure of birdie today but the forecast has relatively modest winds across today. Your thoughts on possibility as I cross the bridge daily along with half of Auckland.

Hi there, personally I don't

Hi there, personally I don't see it happening as the worst of the winds should be east of the city, but they are clearly concerned the low may track in closer. Winds will suddenly ramp out without much warning later today, then ease back. It may not be as bad as people fear but the POTENTIAL for it to get worse is there.

Cheers
