Puhoi / Warkworth weather

Hey Phil, I know it's hard to forecast weather for the Auckland region. It's such a narrow piece of land between oceans.... We work in Puhoi / Warkworth & find that the generalised Akld forecast is often wrong for us. To be specific - we are often re-roofing houses & need to be reasonably certain about what to expect BEFORE removing someone's roof. We rely on good forecasting or otherwise need to call on our insurance when our customer's house & belongings get dowsed! Is there a forecast for north of AKLD rather than just for AKLD city? It's too broad a region & often the fronts slip below the northern region to the Waikato meaning that the AKLD forecast is rendered useless. Thanks for the great job you do & for the enthusiam you do it with. I like the weather too & work in it every day. If possible it would be really good to be able to get a North Auckland forecast? Many thanks for your great works - keep it up. Simon Straka

Hi Simon, thanks very much

Hi Simon, thanks very much for your message and question. Apprecaite the support too - we all do! :) As for Auckland forecasts, we're the only New Zealand based forecaster to provide specifical localised forecasts. In fact we have plans to improve this in the near future so that it is even more localised. If you use the Automatically Find my Location function on our homepage (in the forecast map area), or in our free App, it will create a forecast for that specific area. In the near future we'll be working with IBM (WeatherWatch.co.nz is now and official partner of IBM) to have forecasts that are specific to your location, to within 500 metres. Exceptionally targetting forecasting. So right now my advice is look at our WeatherWatch general Auckland forecasts and use the localised forecast for where you are and really focus on things like the chance of rain across each hour. (Oh and the "today" portion will still appear in the regional forecast at the top - meaning in time you may not need to check Auckland city, and just can use your local automated forecast).

Hope that helps!
Kind regards
Philip Duncan

P.S. We also have commercial services, as low as $500 a month. We're also working with IBM to create more data that is cheap to buy and helpful for people just like you for just when you need it (and much cheaper than $500). All a work in progress - and a bit tough in a market where the NZ Government now owns 3 commercial forecasters - and all 3 are the largest too.

Low vs high

Hi Phil/Aaron in regards to the below when will you have a better idea if the low is going to hit/miss?

G'day there Probably 2 or 3

G'day there

Probably 2 or 3 days out we'll start to have a good idea, currently it wants to just miss the North Island and skip down offshore to the southeast but we'll see how the next few days look :)

Auckland Weather - 10&11 November

Hi Team, Metservice are predicting some nasty weather this coming Friday and Saturday. Looks like a tropical storm coming down from the islands...your thoughts? Thanks

Hi there - take a look at our

Hi there - take a look at our latest weather video (will be up before lunch) as we talk about this "battle of air pressure systems" between the big dry incoming high and the potential sub-tropical low. The low may miss us completely - or directly hit. The video today explains the set up :)

wind

I was wanting too know when was the last time we had Easterlies? The weather seems to be pretty simple to read, the fronts keep coming from Australia circling in an anti-clockwise direction towards New Zealand and then they dump rain and start blowing Westerlies and North-Westerlies. The weather I like is balmy, sunny and a light rain. It's not so nice having downpours and El-Nina burning my skin, when I just want to sit down on the beach and look at the water maybe look for fish and have a look at the trees that inhabit the shoreline. Then look at the sand and see if there's any shells around that are nice enough to pick up and maybe make a sand castle with the family. And then I like to lay down my towel and take my shirt off and test the water too see if it's warm enough to swim in and if it is I go in and have a swim around. One beach that's quite nice is Oneroa beach on Waiheke Island where when you walk out into the water there is all these starfish underfeet and you can walk on them and it feels like they're massaging your feet! It's worth going to and Iim thinking that great Barrier island has some good beaches aswell, but I've never been there although I will get there one day. Weather prediction is good for fisherman because then they know what to expect when dealing with boating out too sea, but it can be a doomsday effect when you are told the next three days are going to be raining. Cheer up Met-service, no matter what the folk think of the reports we are ready to combat the weather anyway, with all this gear that we have like raincoats, gumboots, ski-boots, thermals and Hawaii Tropic sunscreen! Have a good and nice day.

Hi there - thanks for this!

Hi there - thanks for this! Spring tends to favour a LOT of westerly quarter winds so easterlies aren't so common here now unless we have a strong La Nina (which we don't - we're in a 'neutral' season). This coming weekend a sub-tropical low may produce a SE wind flow over parts of the upper North Island. Usually easterlies become more frequent in summer in the north of NZ - and with the cyclone season now underway we'll probably get a few more lows from the north (not cyclones, just lows) which may help fuel more easterlies.
Have a great summer!

Not working

Hey guys, I live in Pukekohe but the system is broken. Have been using your site for years so presume I know what to do unless you have changed it. Problem - despite using HOME and using self populating Pukekohe for forecast, it will give today's weather at the top but no way to get the longer forecast. Whatever I do, it will only give the AUCKLAND summary. As you can see for today, it is quite different. Appreciate your advise on this. Di

Thank you!

Thanks for the accurate forecasts! It’s good to finally have a website I can go to for forecasts and weather that are accurate and I know I can trust! Thank you so much! It’s very much appreciated!

Rain, chance 100% likely

Confused by pictures showing heavy forecast and the explanations as in Beach haven yesterday it was a good day some cloud but otherwise a day for washing which I didn't do because of your explanation??????

Hi there, you really need to

Hi there, you really need to be watching our weather videos - we've been explaining all week why the Fri/Sat/Sun set up is especially hard to forecast due to the incredibly narrow nature of this rain band - been describing it since Tuesday as being so narrow it may lie just out to sea bringing mostly dry weather even though the chance of rain is high. Its a rare but tricky set up. You should also be (hopefully) using our Auckland forecasts over the automated ones for Beach Haven, especially if you're finding things aren't lining up (it's one of the benefits of living in the main centres as we haven't had 100% chance of rain. in fact right now it's just 60% as when we manually write the forecasts for Auckland we override the Wunderground ones.

Saturday Update

Hi Team, We play cricket on saturdays in auckland. How likely is it that we will get play? Dry patches with rain the go? Any particular time of the day/areas of auckland we can expect rain? Thanks Phil/Aaron.

Hi there, there is some

Hi there, there is some chance of cricket being played tomorrow, there will be some dry areas in the region a bit like we're seeing today despite a fairly high chance of rain. Keep an eye on the % of rain in our hourly forecasts and we're also paying extra attention to our WW detailed forecast for Saturday. The weather today and tomorrow is very tricky to lock in, due to it being so narrow and patchy. Hopefully the dry spells are big enough and long enough to help you out!

Weather in Southland next week

Hi, we're coming from UK via Auckland to Southland from Mon 6-Sun 12/11 - Queenstown, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Dunedin. Will it rain solidly & be as cold as here throughout or might we see a bit on sun please?

Hi there Currently it looks

Hi there

Currently it looks like it will be a mixed bag for you around then, rain or showers some days then sunny on others. And it also depends where you are on what day may affect the weather also. This is a run down for the time you are away, it may well change up as these days get closer. The 6th and 7th shows potentially cloudy and showery weather in western areas like Milford Sound and potentially Te Anau while further east it looks drier and sunnier. The 8th may be showery for most places as a southwest change moves through then clearing up on the 9th with sunny areas increasing. The 10th sees another southwest change move in bringing showers, this clears on the 11th then the 12th may be settled everywhere as a high moves onto the lower South Island.

Hope that helps, have a good trip!

Saturday

Hi team, hows Saturday looking for Auckland? I noticed it changing from sunny with few showers to rain. Is it going to be rainy all day?

Hi there, Saturday is proving

Hi there, Saturday is proving to be a VERY tricky day to lock in. Our best thinking is that there will be a mixture of drizzle, long dry spells and showers - with a chance in the afternoon of showers becoming more frequent or even turning to patchy heavier rain in *some* parts of the region. Should have a better idea on Thursday PM as to how it is all shaping up - but we're advising anyone in Auckland to check forecasts right up until Saturday AM itself, as the Saturday forecast is quite a tricky one to lock in (as too is Sunday to some degree!).

Thanks heaps guys ! We have a outdoor event planned in Takapuna from 11:00am till 6:00pm so hopefully it stays dry !

wheres the sun

well for the forcast for chch it said sunny but like its 9 for us and its like 15 degrees and theres no sun just dark clouds when will the sun come out thanks

Sun should be with you now,

Sun should be with you now, was some morning low cloud but it has broken away. Your right we did say just sunny, a chance of low coastal cloud was in the back of my mind but the reality for the most part is it hasn't happened for much of the South Island the last few days (morning cloud etc) although yes it did this morning for Chch, forecast was updated to reflect this before your comment just before or around 9am.

mist around the hills in Balclutha

Hi we are just wondering why it's been so misty around Balclutha in the evenings for the last week or so with this nice weather we have been having? 31/10/17

Hi there, thanks for the very

Hi there, thanks for the very interesting question :) The answer most likely lies in the fact you have an air flow coming from north of New Zealand where the air is quite humid. While it dries out as it moves over your area (part of the reason you have such warm weather at the moment!) it's still producing misty/cloudy spells. Also a sign that with daytime heating you may have some afternoon downpours on Wednesday - or at least in the general area/ranges. Thanks for the update/question!

Whatipu Weather This Weekend

Hi We are staying at the lodge this weekend in Whatipu with about 15 kids, what are the chances of us being able to get outdoors??

H there, we have a bit of a

H there, we have a bit of a messy forecast this weekend in the Auckland region. There's a chance of heavy showers or rain on Saturday PM, but hopefully some good outdoors weather on Sunday (and potentially earlier on Saturday).

All the best and keep an eye on our rain maps for the weekend, our weather videos for the weekend and the % of rain in our HOURLY forecasts each day - it all helps make sense of what is happening :)

Saturday

hi Aaron/Phil. What we can we expect for this Saturday in Auckland? I see you have it listed as sunshine but a couple of other sources have predicted heavy rain. i know its a few days away but trying to plan ahead so any updates would be awesome. Thank you!

Hi there, Saturday has been a

Hi there, Saturday has been a bit of a tricky day to lock in and there may still be changes, this is due to a very narrow area of possible rain that could slide out to sea, or, it may drape itself over Auckland for several hours. We've just updated our Saturday forecast and our current best thinking is that isolated showers may become more widespread later, or even turn to rain. Heavy falls are possible, but again there may be quite a fine line between heavy slow moving rain and mostly dry. Keep an eye on our HOURLY forecasts for Saturday (this is updated every hour automatically) and keep an eye on % of rain across the day. Also keep an eye on the Rain Maps on our MAP page/tab - you can see the area we're trying to lock in.

Cheers!

Halter Office, Auckland (IAUCKLAN631) - Faulty

Hi there, The weather station/data point "Halter Office, Auckland (IAUCKLAN631)" has been the default when going onto the Auckland forecast and current conditions page for the last few months now. This data point has only ever shown wind speed of 0km/h, as well as rain of 0mm. I've reported it several times using the link provided but it continues to be the default - are you able to please manually remove this faulty source? Thanks

Hi there, thanks for this. We

Hi there, thanks for this. We are looking to update all our data based on feedback and reports that have come in this year. We aim to update all data by the end of the year which we hope will address this issue with this station and others like it. We're also looking to include options for you to manually block a station too, as some hilly parts of NZ mean your nearest staton may not actually be the most accurate for your location. NZ is a fun but tricky place to fine tune! We also hope the new Government will open up weather stations we as taxpayers all collectively own and fund, as is the norm in the rest of the western world. Labour has been the most supportive political party on this issue over the past 9 years so with them now in power we'd expect change to match international standards.

Weather on sat

Hi team what can we expect in terms of weather tomorrow around pt chev. We are playing cricket from 12

Hi there Difficuilt. For the

Hi there

Difficuilt. For the most part it's looking a bit wet unfortunately, patchy showers etc. But Auckland is right on the edge of a narrow front which has stalled across the upper North Isand, if this front moves a little further south then conditions could end up being fairly dry, a touch more northwards and you get end up seeing more frequent showers, perhaps even a downpour in the afternoon.

So not straight forward exactly, hope your game goes well should you get the go ahead :)

Met Service

Wonderful..I go to check the rain radar..supposed to be heavy rain.. And the site is down.. Weather watch severely needs a rain radar..

Of course, it could have been

Of course, it could have been down for maintenance or a balloon release (depending which site).

Not sure what the reason is

Not sure what the reason is there. But if we did have access to their radars on this site and it went down for them then more then likely it would affect us too.

Only other option is to invest a fair few million dollars in a radar network but that probably won't happen any time soon.

Aaron

Gloom!

Welcome back Phil - hope you hoildayed somewhere where the sun shone, cause it ain't be shining here! Can you give us something to look forward to in the Akl region? - after a gloomy Dec 16/Jan 17, then a rubbish summer, followed by mid Feb/Mid March big rain events, constant rain from Apr until Sept, then gloom and cloud with wind, the balance of Sept & all October - i am depressed! Forecast for next two weeks no change! Would love to see the sunshine hours for 2017 - be about 100 hours i reckon. Vitamin D levels low - Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) peaking! Cheer us up please!!!!!!!
