Bay Of Islands Weather

Going sailing on the 15th of Jan for a week. Is it too far out to forecast? Concerned about a low coming down from the tropics.

Hi thereThe 15th looks

Hi there

The 15th looks mainly cloudy, chance of a shower or two with northeasterlies. 16th has some rain with heavy falls possible then clearing up on the 17th.

That's as far as I can see currently, and yes the above may change as we get closer to those dates due to it being a bit far out in time. Keep an eye on these maps if you can: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

They show exactly what we would be looking at.

Wishing you the best for you trip!

Certainly a cold morning!

Gisborne 16th-28th jan

Hello Just wondering if you have a rough idea of the weather due in Gisborne between the 16th - 28th jan yet? Whether it is Rain or sun? And what kind of temperatures. Hoping we are seeing the last of this rain soon.... Thanks

Hi there, it's too far out

Hi there, it's too far out for us to be able to answer that sorry. Generally speaking high pressure should be dominating but, as we can see this week, we have a sudden storm on our doorstep. Usually in a La Nina summer Gisborne has a higher chance of cloud and slightly lower temperatures - but hopefully you'll be there for a big high pressure system. 10 days out is usually about when we have a good idea as to what is going on with the weather patterns.

Driving Whangarei to Kawakawa Safe?

Hi, just checking if it is safe to drive from whangarei to Kawakawa and back this morning? saw wind warnings and wondering if they are still in place. I am driving a van

Hi there, the edge of the

Hi there, the edge of the centre of the low is now brushing Auckland and Northland so it's possible winds may still be severe in some exposed areas. Generally the worst of the winds will be Friday AM with blustery conditions remaining for the rest of the day in the north. Use common sense and if you feel it's not too bad you can probably cautiously set off.

Kind regards and safe travels

Driving from Hamilton to Auckland

Hi guys, I just want to know if it is safe to drive from Hamilton to Auckland and back tomorrow? Or is it better to drive Saturday? And also is it safe to drive to Devonport tomorrow (over the big, scary bridge). Thanks! Kayla

Hi there, better to drive to

Hi there, better to drive to on Saturday Kayla, but Friday will improve as the day wears on. Friday morning looks pretty rough in some exposed parts of Auckland.
Cheers :)

Hi Guys, Just a quick

Hi Guys, Just a quick question for you - MS forecast for Akl region is "severe gale gusting 120 km/h in exposed places". Are those "exposed places" likely to be the marine areas you refer to in your article on this storm?

Hi there, this relates to

Hi there, this relates to coastal areas, like the Manukau Heads or maybe Whangaparaoa, the Harbour Bridge.

At this stage we're not expecting 120km/h for most suburbs but it's a bit of a fluid situation and worthy keeping an eye on updates. Our main focus for severe gales is across marine areas and in some exposed western areas of the Auckland region nearest to the Tasman Sea.

Te Aroha Weather

Hi this is Colleen from Te Aroha. Can you please explain why it is when i type in Te Aroha it comes under Bay Of Plenty, we are actually in the Matamata Piako District. Some time ago we were under Coromandel Peninsula. So what do we actually come under please. Thanks Colleen

Hi there Colleen, the weather

Hi there Colleen, the weather has slightly different boundaries and Te Aroha falls under the Kaimai Ranges/BOP side - it makes no difference to the accuracy of the forecast. In 2018 we're working to change these boundary names to make them more realistic for people like you who consider yourself in MPD or Eastern Waikato.

Taupo weather

Hi. I am heading off to Taupo from Auckland tomorrow to camp in a tent should a hold off a day or two due to the bad weather that is forecast.

Hi there I would hold off

Hi there

I would hold off personally if you can, travelling down today might be ok but you'll have a very wet and potentially windy time camping overnight tonight. Saturday night looks much more pleasant, the ground could still be boggy though depending on where you are camping.

Cheers
Aaron

It would be nice in Dunedin

Wow WW Team The Next 24 Hours information states that we should be getting rain but as I am sitting outside texting this....not a drop. ((Mr. Pussycat is doing his imitation of belly crawling across the desert saying, "Water! Water! I know Ima Cat but....WATER!)) Hahaha. When will we get some? Can the Aucklanders give us a little please? I held off walking to Uni to chose classes coz I thought it would be bucketing down. Please help. I trust your answers. Big thanks to you all. Keep up the great work. Funky Student & Cat.

Haha, hey there Funky Student

Haha, hey there Funky Student & Cat, the reason you have a high chance of rain today is due to the higher humidity levels and afternoon downpours. So the risk is high for them to form in your area but they are all scattered (or hit and miss) in where each shower/downpour develops specifically. We may be able to give you some of the North Island's incoming low - some chance on Friday :)
Good luck! Thanks for your email - it was fun to read. Good luck with choosing your uni classes!

NZ Herald reporting standards

NZH at it again regarding this latest storm. Sensational headlines and tabloid journalism at its worst. In one sentence they say "Potentially destructive winds are expected to barrel across the North Island for days', then proceed to quote you "the worst of the winds becoming hurricane force - 120 km/h - for a time at the centre but such winds would stay mainly out at sea". Bit of a contradiction there. It just seems that they are struggling to produce a report and are resorting to cherry-picking quotes from a variety of sources and then stringing them together to make a "story". I for one am thankful that your site exists and can provide calm and accurate reporting on such events. Keep up the good work.

Rain rain go away!

Hi! We're camping in Karikari peninsular. Rain is looking heavy on Thursday? Wondering if we should be leaving before it hits or is it not looking too heavy anymore? Thanks!

Hi there - you may not want

Hi there - you may not want to read the latest story we just put up a few minutes after you posted this question! Yes there is a chance for heavy rain. It may not linger too long, so check the local forecasts for that area in our website or app and then take a look at our latest story on the incoming storm and the timings of it.  If you look at our current poll the country is very divided between wanting rain and not wanting rain!!

All the best with your decision making :)

Saturday the 6th

Hi there, what's it looking like on the 6th Jan in New Lynn, Auckland around 1pm onwards? Your forecast now says early rain then easing off. Do you think this rain could clear for 1pm? Also, when do you have a more certain prediction? Thanks! PS LOVE the site!!

Hi there, it looks as though

Hi there, it looks as though a sizeable low will be crossing Auckland on Friday then gradually clearing to the south on Saturday. It's still too far out to lock in 1pm specifically but the latest data shows the centre of the low tracking down the North Island and that could help clear things up into Saturday afternoon. Keep an eye on those hourly forecasts we have over the coming days.
Kind regards and thanks for the support!!

OH NO!!! My daughter is getting married on Thursday 4th, at Castaways in Waiuku! It's looking pretty awful weather wise, what are the chances of it being dry between 3pm and 6pm???

Hi there At this stage yes

Hi there

At this stage yes some rain looks to be falling after midday in your location, nothing overly heavy but it will be a nuisance! Hopefully for you and your daughters sake there may be a few dry spells in amoungst areas of rain on the day in question, or you have a Plan B.

Wishing you guys the best!

Auckland 5th Jan

I am curious - your forecast for Auckland on 5th Jan shows winds of 15 kph, but the hourly forecast dropdown does not have winds below 31kph for the same time - mostly they are around 40 kph. Which should I believe?

Hi there That forecast is 4

Hi there

That forecast is 4 to 5 days out and forecasts being what they are are constantly reviewed as they boil down to the day in question. For the 5th, yesterday's models indicated there was a tightly packed low over the North Island with it's centre over Auckland indicating light variable winds. That has shifted slightly and your right the winds are definitely looking stronger now. The problem is another model run could place the low centre over Auckland again and we're back to square one. Either way we'll review all the forecasts later today :)

Re/ Weather Undergrounds PWS weather map of nz

Hi.Do you guys no if Weather Underground is going to update there PWS map as there are a lot more new stations have come on board. If you go on to their web site their map shows all the stations in nz.You guys need the latest updated map.I have a PWS myself which uploads to weather underground like many of us out there, but does not show us on the current weather underground map.Keep up the good work guys.Thanks.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the message. You raise a good point and we'll be directly asking IBM about it in the new year (as they now own Wunderground, The Weather Company and WSI). We are working with them to change the live obs page on our own website (which displays the WU PWS obs) and have been working with IBM/TWC to remove false readings for 2018. I'll make contact with them in January and once we get a response we can publish that on our homepage/news feed to let you all know. We're keen to upgrade the display of PWS to add the new ones (and more modern stations) and remove any false alarms and double ups. We aim to do that across 2018 - and we also hope the Government will stop stalling on releasing the findings of their own official open data review  (nine months now since the review was completed and handed to the Government by MBIE) as this would add all the current weather stations that taxpayers fund also (and as is common practice in all other first world nations).

Either way there are improvements coming this year and we'll let you know once we get a response from IBM/TWC
Cheers

You should feel proud

For a few years I have relied on you guys for accurate forecasts and you always come through. Your short range accuracy is as amazing as your ability to suffer those people who seem to be unable to look up the forecast for their region! Keep up the fantastic work in 2018 and I hope that the powers that be decide to level the playing field and allow you access to information that the rest of the world would see as a right

Hi thereThank you so much for

Hi there
Thank you so much for your kind supportive message. It really does mean a lot to us. We are working hard to always improve our accuracy and provide a helpful free service - it causes us a lot of sleepless nights too but it's worth the focus (and worry!) over the years when you see that people find that extra detail helpful and accurate. It's very disappointing that the NZ Government won't share the results of their own official review about weather data we all colletively tax fund but don't have open access to use. Tthe results were given to the Government in March and we've been officially denied knowing what that report says ever since.

Thanks again - have a wonderful 2018 and a Happy New Year!
Kind regards
Philip, Aaron and the team

Thanks again

I'm sure a lot of us on here would be more than happy to support a petition to free up access to the data. Have you got any plans to go public to highlight this inequality?

Forecast for Abel Tasman National Park

Hi there we are supposed to walking the Abel Tasman next week with our children. Is there any chance it won’t rain all week like the forecast says? Thanks heaps

Hi there, the forecast for

Hi there, the forecast for next week is a bit messy with a combination of rain bands moving in from the sea, but also daytime heating causing very heavy downpours (and maybe even isolated thunder) inland. So you may have a variety of weather with some sunny hot periods mixed in with grey times and very heavy downpours popping up which can be a bit dangerous. We suggest you keep up to date with the forecasts we have (and we have quite a few locations to check from in the Abel Tasman area) but also Government owned forecaster MetService and their fully tax funded National Park forecasts too.

All the best - and if you can make the decision as late as possible to go then do so, as the forecasts over the next few days and week are going to be a bit changeable due to the unstable set up around NZ (a little less predictable so harder to be more specific to one particular area).

Next weeks forcast

Merry Xmas Team OMG just looked at next weeks forecast for AKL .... a week of rain until I go back to work! Is this a locked in forecast? And if so is there anywhere in NZ that I can escape to for sun as this is just hideous..... ( I knew this would happen after all the sun in Dec whilst looking out the window at work) ;((( Cheers

G'day there, merry xmas to

G'day there, merry xmas to you too!

There will be some showery weather coming up for Auckland but there will be plenty of dry spells in amongst the showers, perhaps even some sun although Wednesday next week does look like the wettest and cloudiest day. One thing is it won't be cold, this weather is coming from the north so high's in the mid twenties look likely.

In terms of a dry spot all week long, well it probably won't happen as most places will see some shower activity at some point next week, you would have to move around a bit if you wanted to stay completely dry. Central Otago may be nice and hot with still days but afternoon heavy showers with a chance of thunderstorms is possible from Tuesday, these can be hit and miss so you may get them you may not.

Hope you work out something.

Aaron

Cool Air

Hello, I can't find a link.. is there a video that explains where this cool air is coming from? I'm really curious. It's been so hot the last few weeks, even in late spring, and now bam, I'm wearing a sweater in summer.

Where is it coming from? It's

Where is it coming from? It's coming from the south of course, the last few days we have had a southerly airflow over New Zealand so that's where the cold air has been coming from, further south :)

Cheers
Aaron
