Rain

Gday WW, are the long range forecasts showing a change in weather patterns after the start of March? Central Canterbury getting bloody dry again and looking for some moisture relief.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the important question and already sorry for our reply...as little to no significant rain in the next two weeks at this stage. Perhaps some drizzle or showers on Sunday...but really it does look mostly dry next couple of weekes. Next week we'll take a more detailed outlook at Canterbury's set up for March. We'll try to find the positives!

Cheers

Rain

A few spits fell as I watered the garden tonight in New Lynn. Only noticed as arms were bare. Urgent watering done!

Hmmm!

I'm puzzled guys - what wind direction is V? See it's coming for Friday and Saturday now!!!!

Hi there

V = Variable (any wind direction possible)
SB = Sea Breezes

Kind regards :)

Thank you:) I got the SB - but never would have on the V - I like V - may there be many more! Delighted you have summer booked in Akl for next week!!!

Wow!

Hello guys - awesome work done with the hourly forecast. Keep up the excellent work.

detailed weather info

nice to have tye detail, but your detailed data is hard work cognitively - I recommend adding graphical overlay to ease scanning

new graph

Hi Chaps - LOVE the new temp mapping!! nice work!

Humidity

Hi my fav weather guru's! Has the horrid humidity now left Auckland - will we now be able to sleep at night???

Hi there - looks like

Hi there - looks like humidity levels will be fairly high for the next while in Auckland. ENE and NE wind flows can be exceptionally humid in summer, but if it tilts more SE then that is usually drier and less humid (but can be hotter) in summer. We're in a new weather pattern now - one that sees higher humidity levels for Auckland than they have bene for the past couple months.

Cheers - and good luck sleeping!

Sunshine in Auckland

Would be interested to see any data on sunlight hours in auckland this "summer". I'm struggling to think of a worse one in recent memory- maybe 10 days of proper clear sunny days in the entire time, it's just been endless mediocrity and gloom. Even Feb is terrible - 10 days in a row of murk and cloud.... was the last one like this 2011?

Hi there, because NIWA use

Hi there, because NIWA use tax funded data for their own commercial gains you'll need to visit their website to get this information, sorry. But agree it has been fairly cloudy (with the exception of the two recent long weekends which were spectacular!). Now that the tropics are affecting us (we never got the tropical low we talked about a week ago but we did get the change created in the sub-tropics and it has single handledly fixed the droughts/big dry across the North Island in the past few days. So this new pattern may favour even more cloud!  Check with NIWA for the numbers you're looking for.

Kind regards

WHANGAREI WEATHER FORECASTS

I AM 67 YEARS OLD AND A NORTLAND RESIDENT.I CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW BADLY THE FORECAST, SPECIFICALLY FOR WHANGAREI, IS PORTRAYED TO THE WORLD.THE FACT THAT IT IS SHOWN ONLINE OR FORECASTED ON RADIO UP TO 2 TO 8 DEGREES COOLER THAN IT ACTUALLY IS,IS A SERIOUS BLUNDER.THIS REFLECTS ON-LINE AND IN GENERAL TO ANYONE WANTING TO VISIT OUR AREA.I HAVE LIVED IN AUSTRALIA AND FIND THAT THEY REFLECT ACTUAL TEMPERATURES VERY WELL IN GENERAL.WHY I CONSIDER IT TO BE VERY WRONG IS THAT IT DIRECTLY AFFECTS PEOPLES DESICIONS TO VISIT OR NOT TO VISIT OUR LOCATION.THIS CAN AND I'M CONVINCED,DOES HAVE A SERIOUS AFFECT ON OUR TOURIST AND GERNERAL VISITOR NUMBERS.I UNDERSTAND THAT THE TEMPS ARE RECORDED AT OUR LOCAL AIRPORT,WHICH WOULD HAVE TO BE THE COOLEST AND MOST BREEZE EXPOSED SPOT IN THE WHOLE AREA.TRUE HEAT AND EVEN HUMIDITY IS NOT REFLECTED ACCURATELY OR CORRECTLY AND THIS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED.FRIENDS FROM OVERSEAS CONSTANTLY REMARK HOW MUCH HOTTER IT IS IN WHANGAREI THAN WHAT THEY WERE EXPECTING OR FROM WHAT THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.THE DIRECT AFFECT THIS HAS ON OUR TOURIST INDUSTRY CANNOT BE UNDERESTIMATED AS MANY OF THE TRAVELLING PUBLIC BYPASS OUR TOWN BECAUSE IT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE AS WARM AS THE FAR NORTH.

As someone who now lives in

As someone who now lives in New Zealand you may like to know that our service is 100% free of charge to you, but taxes here pay for both MetService and NIWA (no other western country on earth has two Government forecasters that won't share their tax funded data openly with the private sector or the public who fund them). If you have a complaint about NZ forecasts we suggest you start with the ones your taxes cover - MetService and NIWA - and not a free service like ours.

Kind regards

Well said Weather Watch! I

Well said Weather Watch! I greatly appreciate the job you're doing, and as some who spends most of a month up near Whangarei every summer, I know how it varies with coastal/non-coastal etc. Keep up the good work!

T20 at Eden Park

Hi there, Is today's match likely to be washed out? Due to attend but thought I'll ask before starting to consider other plans for the evening. Cheers! P

Hi there, please take a look

Hi there, please take a look at our RainWatch news story on our homepage - we have an entire paragraph about the T20.  We're also updating our Auckland forecast more frequently today to track conditions. Good luck!

Cheers

Thanks

Apologies - I didn't check the homepage and came straight to the forecast hoping there will be something in the comments!

No worries at all, you

No worries at all, you weren't to know we covered it there! :)

Saturday sunny spells

How's Saturday looking around midday in West Auckland? Hoping for the rain to hide away for a brief time.

Hi there Can't say much more

Hi there

Can't say much more then is already in our Auckland forecast. The odd shower about with the greatest chance being during the afternoon hours. There should be dry periods at times during the day but that afternoon period could bring an isolated downpour.

Aaron

With the fires in the port

With the fires in the port hills being slowly contained and rain expected on Saturday could the fire flare up again early next week with higher temps forecast.

Hi there - good question. The

Hi there - good question. The rain on Saturday may not be much - the great news is that the forecast does show a better chance of rain on Saturday, with data suggesting maybe 5 to 10mm of rain possible. If over 5mm then that will be helpful - under that won't do much, in our view. Yes the long term trend (next week) looks hotter, drier and windier again. Fingers crossed it can be extinguished during the weekend, or at least heavily controlled - but yes, there is certainly a chance fires could flare up again next week. Everyone in Canterbury should be vigilant in these conditions.

Hunua area weather for Saturday

Getting married, with a (planned) mostly outdoor ceremony and reception - how likely are we to be seeing rain in the afternoon to mid evening (approx 2pm-8pm) Thanks! Mark

Hi there The morning looks

Hi there

The morning looks dry with sunny areas, it's in the afternoon that cloud builds and isolated showers develop, some of those may become heavy with even the chance of thunderstorms then easing mid evening. Your sort've a bit in the middle there. If you had said you were going to be in the Waikato I would've said rain chances were fairly high, if you were in Auckland more I would've said you may only get a few afternoon showers. It's a bit like asking if you put a ball on the peak of a hill which side will it roll down if you get my drift. At this stage I'll just say isolated afternoon showers look possible some of which may be heavy then easing in the evening.

Hope your wedding goes well!

Cheers

Bay of Islands

Come from UK winter & have a few days in the Bay of Islands Russell Sat to Tue, any chance of some summer :-)

Hi there - they've just had

Hi there - they've just had 2.5 months of non-stop summer! :) The good news is that the weather will improve for you by the weekend, even better early next week too (and warm).

Rain in Auckland

Hi, I am in West Auckland and see that you're predicting rain for tonight and tomorrow. Will it be a heavy soaking or just a light mist like yesterday? Trying to decide whether to give the garden a good soak with the hose or not! Thanks you guys & gals are great!

Hi there - we may still get

Hi there - we may still get more of that misty/drizzly rain but it's likely to intensify over the next couple days and we expect some soaking rains in West Auckland. Rainfall totals look to be around 50 to 80mm for Auckland region. Looks as though you won't need to water the garden (unless dry this morning and you want to top up for today) but both Thurs and Fri and maybe even Sat could be quite wet in Auckland.

Thanks for the feedback - if we think the rain isn't going to eventuate we'll very likely headline that as a news story (as so many people are wanting rain, we want to ensure we're trying to cover it all as accurately as possible and not give false hope).

Cheers!

Blackcaps Twenty20 at Eden on Friday

What do you reckon the chances are of this going ahead? Looks to be fairly slim? First ball scheduled for 7pm I believe

Not looking flash at this

Not looking flash at this stage sorry - while the heaviest rain does appear to be on Thursday and Friday AM we do see low cloud and set in drizzly conditions in the Auckland region from Friday PM to Saturday PM. We'll get more detailed as we get closer to Friday evening as with set ups like this it can be tricky working out. But at this stage it looks slim as you say. The one positive is that the bulk of the rain should be moving south of Auckland by then - so we'll keep a close eye on it.

weather vids

Hi are you guys going to put your weather forecast vids up soon we miss them

Saturday 18/2

Hi, What are the chances of playing cricket in West Auckland on Saturday betweem 12:30 - 6pm... How much rain is expected around then and whats the day going to look like?

Hi there, hard to work out

Hi there, hard to work out Saturday with detail (especially when it comes to cricket when can be called off quite easily). At this stage it does look like a fairly drizzly damp morning then gradually drying out into the afternoon. Hard to work out precisely when as it's a very messy, broken up, narrow area of rain. We'll be fine tuning Saturday's forecast more and more with each day.

Cheers and good luck for Saturday!

Lightning

Lightning radar is going crazy.. will that make it to auckland

Hi there - no at this stage

Hi there - no at this stage it's out at sea and not moving northwards due to high pressure - also weakening as it moves inland (towards Waikato).  Low drizzly cloud in Auckland may also limit views of lightning but it's also possible Aucklanders may see a flicker from the south west.

Anticyclonic gloom in Piha

Living here for 6 years now - never had a summer with sooo many days of 'anticyclonic gloom' - another day where we can hardly see the neighbours property ... I'm sooo over it!!!

I was looking at your rain

I was looking at your rain maps and saw what looked like a tropical cyclone coming towards new Zealand late next weekend would this be of any concern?

HI there, we first mentioned

HI there, we first mentioned a tropical storm risk last Friday. It's still early days with a lot of change likely in the models but there is certainly a growing feeling that a low from the tropics will develop and head south this month - or at least threaten to head south! As we saw with Cyclone Winston last year these lows can sometimes stuggle to drop south when we have a belt of high pressure over NZ during late summer/early Autumn.  It's certainly one to keep an eye on and we're already monitoring this potential storm in news updates. No risk to NZ at this stage but it's a bit of a 'watch this space' situtation.

Monday 13th Feb weather RAIN?

I am rather confused by chart and reports as I live in Beach Haven North Shore. Trying to save on water using all my water on plants from what I use daily but when I see rain that day or evening I rely on this data to not use hose or sprinkler. But so far these past two days I have seen no sight of rain at all but your chart insists I have rain so where should I be standing? Carole Kilincli

HI Carole - thanks for your

HI Carole - thanks for your message and question. Basically our maps and data are noting the high humidity and the fact that the air is saturated over the upper North Island. It's why we're seeing drizzle developing off and on. So while a high chance of some sort of rain, it may not be the sort of rain that soaks the garden. The best chance this week for that looks to be around Thurs/Fri as rain clouds may be heavier around here then.  For proper rain the % of rain normally needs to be over 70% but even then you can have 100% chance of rain but just drizzle. We'll have more details in our News section on the rain for this week in the upper North Island - most likely on Tuesday before noon - and we'll focus on the days that have the best chance for soaking rains and the days that may only be drizzly or fairly dry. It's very patchy/hit and miss sort of weather.

Cheers

Camping weekend

Hi, we're hoping to go camping in Whatipu/Karekare today for a long weekend, but the weather after today doesn't look to great. Can you give us a clearer picture of the chance of rain for this area over the next couple of days? Cheers

Hi there - you'll find 10 day

Hi there - you'll find 10 day forecasts on our homepage for 1500 NZ locations. Here's Karekare: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Karekare

There's a fair bit of cloud and humidity around this week, with rain (or drizzly showers) most likely to be more widespread on Thursday and Friday but Tues and Weds don't look too bad overall. Good luck!

Rain

Where do you take your rain reading for Cambridge. I live in Leamington, and we haven't had any moisture at all, and driving thru Cambridge this morning, it was bone dry too.

Hi there - we'll be looking

Hi there - we'll be looking into this. A couple of other stations had false readings yesterday so we re working on reporting this to the owners of the stations. We have already built an observations page but currently we don't display it as we iron out the bugs. What we may end up doing is making it public sooner than expected and giving the public the chance to easily click "Report" and be able to identify which part of the Obs are wrong (as it would speed up the accuracy of our entire network). We're also waiting on the NZ Govt to make a decision about the Official Investigation they launched last year into freeing up tax funded weather observations at both NIWA and MetService to be used freely as they are in all other western nations. So a work in progress in two areas to bring more accuracy to Cambridge and other towns.

Is there a way to find yesterdays total rainfall without looking at this site at 1 minute to midnight?
