The "Now" temperature

Hi I really like your weather forecasts and find them the most accurate and informative and they are my go-to website for weather info.. However, there is one thing about the "Now" temperature for Dunedin. On close examination I note that it is actually the current temperature at Patearoa which is inland Otago and a fair step from Dunedin. The "today" and "tonight" details I take to relate to Dunedin and I used to assume the "now" detail did too until one day it was so patently incorrect that I looked closely and noticed that it wasn't for Dunedin at all. Surely Weatherwatch has a temperature station for Dunedin closer than Patearoa? I'e just checked the Metservice website for Dunedin and they're showing current temp 7.6 feels like 6 while according to Wetherwatch in Dunedin (well Patearoa actually) it's 4.3!! Why do you do this? Thanks and regards

Hi therePhil replied to a

Hi there

Phil replied to a comment exactly like this 6 days ago, this is what he said:

Hi there - we have just recently logged this serious issue with Wunderground. Most other centres are accurate but for some reason Dunedin's current reading is incorrect. We're fixing a few other small bugs with boundaries in other regions but the data pulled from Patearoa is definitely incorrect and we're working hard and quickly with Wunderground to immediately get this sorted. The fault also occurs on the WU website itself too, so that's helpful as it means their techs can see it and work to address it. We don't have an ETA on when this will be resolved but we hope fairly soon now that we've spoken to WU about it.

The app will find your nearest reading and in time we're working to add "change this station" so you can manually choose the one you feel is most accurate for you (as you know Dunedin has a real variety of weather within the city and airport - temperatures can range by several degrees at the same time - or like last week some had snow while others had sun!

Thanks for the feedback and information, we'll pass this on to WU as well. Apologies for the fault - and thanks for sticking with us :)

"Now"

Very many thanks for this explanation. I appreciate your prompt reply and look forward to Wunderground fixing it soon. Despite that little glitch WW still far and away the most reliable forecast and the one I rely on and in addition it is also a really interesting and informative site with lots of interesting weather related items too. Keep up the good work - we do value it. Thanks and regards

Hi there, thanks so much! We

Hi there, thanks so much! We are looking at some significant changes to our current observations to bring them more inline with 'industry standard' later this year (we hope!). It's a shame the NZ Government through MetService and NIWA make it impossible for us to share already tax funded data in real time. It seems the review the Government was working on has been thrown in a dark cupboard due to the election. So much for transparency!

Thanks heaps for your support!

Why oh why have you been

Why oh why have you been quoted in the news calling this low a "death spiral"? I thought you were against sensationalism in the media? I think you must be a step too far removed from the reality of the situation if you think calling it a "death spiral" is a joke. Now I haven't heard of any deaths, but it certainly wouldn't be funny if there were. People die due to the weather in New Zealand relatively frequently, and it isn't a laughing matter. Those of us who have been having to deal with the consequences of the weather would prefer that a weather service gave us useful information via the media, for example how much more rain is expected and when it will stop, so we can go back home. It is a serious situation and the language used should reflect that. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please cut the fanciful, overly-sensationalised clap next time please. It does NOT help my anxiety about the situation.

If you read the lead story we

If you read the lead story we have it's a very considered piece - the description is actually to point out the storm is dying. The fact the tabloids are taking something small from the end of a press release and headlining it is something you should take up with them. The low is actually tearing itself apart and killing itself off (it's quite a normal saying to say a "storm is dying" or "the winds are dying off"). Nothing we said was in humour? Have zero idea where you got that from. It's quite a stunningly fast end to the life of this low considering yesterday it was such a major storm. If we were 'sensational' we would've headlined those words, or placed it at the lead of a story. Instead it's a small section at the end of all the details you specifically just asked for. In fact we've gone out of way to give great detail, updated frequently across the day and overnight here on this website - not for the media but for people like yourself. So we suggest if people have anxiety over the weather they should get their weather forecast directly from a weather website like ours (and MetService) and not from a tabloid news outlet and what they choose to cherry pick to headline for clicks.

Kind regards and thanks for taking the time to write in.

Thanks for the explanation,

Thanks for the explanation, sorry I thought it was a quote over the phone, the article made it sound like they had spoken to you directly. I go to media outlets because they pull together info from weather forecasters as well as civil defence, road closures etc. Certainly journalists can be irresponsible, they should have linked the original article if they took it from an article. I saw it on the Herald website, I think I won't be using their website again. In saying that though, maybe it is worth remembering this case in future as things can easily be taken out of context, and a phrase like "death spiral" certainly sounds dramatic. So it is probably one to avoid if you don't want a journalist to jump on it. Granted you shouldn't HAVE to pander to journalists, but unfortunately journalists are not held accountable and therefore these things happen. More to the point: when will it stop raining in Christchurch? We are stuck here and would like to go back home to Timaru but that looks unlikely to happen in the near future. Thanks for replying and apologies again for assuming it was a direcr quote rather than bad journalism.

Hi there - it's totally ok!

Hi there - it's totally ok! Seriously :) We get quite a few people who read/hear things in the mainstream news and they get the wrong end of the stick and write to us unhappy. The media have been great at covering the damage and road closures and council warnings etc from this event - they offer the public a terrific service. But when they get into the forecasting side of things we often get big headlines because, let's all face it, quite a few of our news brands have become tabloids. We use words/terms like that carefully and sparingly. Part of the reason for our growth as a brand is that we explain things in understandable ways. Sometimes there is creativity to help people understand in their heads how these systems works. Storms are often personalised - it's why Tropical Storms started being given human names, as it helps with understanding storms more/making them stand out/easier to track etc. Really appreciate you taking the time to write in, we do take all the comments seriously even when we push back sometimes. As for Christchurch - some good news - it appears the heaviest rain may be now showing signs of easing. Even some dry spells coming in. Should improve tonight. Keep an eye on our news feed, we've been live updating all day about the weather around Otago and Canterbury (and also via our Twitter and Facebook pages).

Have a good night - hope you get to go back to Timaru soon, it's great to see the Army stepping in to help.

Cheers

Thanks again for your replies

Thanks again for your replies and explanations. It does help to hear your replies after seeing the scare tactics that the media use when taking your words out of context - it worked on me! It is difficult while we are up here, we'd love to get home so we can make sure our home and neighbours are okay. I am happy to hear that the heaviest rain is over. I will be keeping an eagle eye on your newsfeed now instead of other news sites, as we are really keen to get the right info so we can get home asap. Thanks again.

Wet, wet, wet in. Dunedin

Hey. WW Team Come down to Dunedin for a surf in the streets. I'm very tempted. Haha. Seriously, the streets look like rivers and it doesn't look like I'm going to the Uni Central Library for study. This is a good day to stay home. Books, tea, cat, heater, tonnes of rain. Who could ask for more. STAY SAFE out there. A.C.

Thanks very much for the

Thanks very much for the update AC! Hope you stayed dry (and the cat). Looks to be drying out now. Definitely a 'stay safe kinda day' but in saying that we understand the fascination with a surf down a flooded calm street (which clearly we definitely do not endorse!!). Enjoy the weather - and the drier Sunday! :)

Cheers

Voice of reason

Flecks of rain

Plenty of flecks of rain in New Lynn. NE windows showing it as is the humid atmosphere. Ugh humidity!

Videos

Hi WeatherWatch folks, thanks for the information packed videos. Makes forward planning a lot easier. May I make a suggestion...would it be possible to make the New Zealand land mass either darker or heavily outlined so as to enable watchers to see the country under the weather event being discussed. When there are stormy conditions or cloudy conditions or just plain maps full of pesky isobars, it is sometimes difficult to see NZ let alone where I live. Just a suggestion..or maybe I'm blind ;D Ross Herbert 9495

Hi Ross, thanks very much for

Hi Ross, thanks very much for your kind feedback and your suggestions. Yes I totally hear you and, to be honest, I should do a better job of explaining just why we zoom out like that and not show so much detail landwise sometimes. The reason being is that NZ is so small when you zoom in you lose the full understanding of what is coming in.

I purposely zoomed out the maps today because the system is SO big it's just smothering NZ, so upclose you'll just see your area with either a giant blob of rain over it or a few isobars, hard to work out if the rain is coming or going or getting lighter/more intense etc. However I need to perhaps make a better effort to point out where the parts of NZ are. Honestly I feel like I'm speaking a hundred miles a minute and sometimes it still takes 5 minutes to get it all out and I always regret not covering certain things afterwards - every single day!! So basically yes, will try to highlight the coastline more, but also understand with these big storms the wider the picture the more accurate the general forecast will be.

Thanks again
Philip Duncan

Thanks

Hi thanks for that explanation. I also agree with the other visitor - I really couldn't figure out where NZ was, under all that cloud mass ! Doing a great job.

Videos

Good evening Philip, thanks for the reply and explanation. Just keep on doing what you are doing mate. As far as I am concerned your information is what matters. I do like your suggestion about some areas being pointed out though as with a reference to the main areas ( he points to the map ) will let us reference our own tiny bits of the big picture. Once again, great job and absolutely no criticism intended Regards Ross

Oh I totally understand -

Oh I totally understand - honestly we love people telling us how to improve, what they don't like, what they love etc. The entire WeatherWatch brand has been shaped out of demand by the public, not us insisting on certain things.

With weather videos I far prefer to do a big picture story of what is going on, as then you can relate/add that to your local forecast and make sense of it more.

Appreciate the feedback, keep it coming and thank you very much for your support :)

Phil

Excellent. Can you fix those

Excellent. Can you fix those back to front wind barbs on some of your maps? They look odd (clearly confused with northern hem depictions). Barbs should point to lowest pressure.

Hi there, thanks for your

Hi there, thanks for your comment. This is from the head of MetOcean who supply the maps. "Our wind barbs are correct however they differ from others in that the feathers protrude from the port-side, whereas others are starboard-side".

Hi there,Your taxes fund live

Hi there,
Your taxes fund live observations from MetService and NIWA - but they won't share this public data with the private sector due to commercial greed (The Government is now officially reviewing this). The network we display is from hard working New Zealanders who are sharing their live observations.

You'll find in the "NOW" box there is a Report Bad Data button, please report this bad data as it helps us fix these sorts of problems. We may ask Wunderground to manually remove these stations if they don't autofix in the coming months. The more people that report faults the sooner we can clean the data up. That one in your area has been a problem for a while so we may seek to remove it and replace with something, um, much more accurate than 28 in mid winter! Most are reliable, but the odd one like this one is clearly wrong.
Thanks a lot

You guys seem to be way more

You guys seem to be way more accurate than the metservice, why is that? Also am navigating around your website and wondering if you do ski area forecasts. Haven't found it but a high chance it could be user error. Thanks Vince
