Auckland sunset

Beautiful bright pink & orange sunset tonight NW fading fast. Been sundog in the W & beautiful clouds.

Typical NZ Herald Headline

Yet again we have another sensational headline that doesn't quite reflect the contents of the article: "East Coast told to brace for giant 4m waves as another large storm takes aim for New Zealand". Taking aim for NZ? Really?

Hi there, we have nothing to

Hi there, we have nothing to do with the NZ Herald anymore. Our entire stories this week have gone out of their way to say this low isn't taking direct aim for NZ but that it's likely to brush just offshore - so close enough to cause some concern. Dangerous rips, currents and big waves are expected along many east coast beaches for a time on Sunday and Monday. We can't control their approach to news so always come to us for a second opinion! :)
Cheers

A good move on your part. The Herald has really lowered it's standards in regard to weather stories and seem to be relying on sensational headlines rather than facts. You guys are by far the more realistic and reliable option.

Thank you so much - that's

Thank you so much - that's really good to hear as that is certainly our goal.

Cheers :)

Sub Tropical Storm?????

Sub Tropical Storm to brush past NZ. RUBBISH. It has NO rotation and the strongest winds only reach to 40km from the east. Surfs up? I don't believe you know what surf is. If the low develops properly maybe then we may see bigger seas. What a load of blow-hard hot air. Woeful media hype.

Hi there - the low hasn't

Hi there - the low hasn't even really developed yet. You may want to look at our videos or maps to get a better idea as to what is forming over the next 72 hours, because we forecast what is coming not just what is happening right this second.

Kind regards

Much cooler

Much cooler in Auckland tonight. Great seeing the magnificent clouds go away. WW site doing a few strange things, when clicking on news from bottom of page. Gives a mainly blank page & throws everything to the left, then clickable options lead to main page as normal!

Wind

Was there an easterly wind in new plymouth on easter sunday night.

Hi there Not sure sorry,

Hi there

Not sure sorry, reliable records aren't available for Sunday night. I can see winds were a strong NW during the day. Monday saw winds go around to the SE, so that change could have occured overnight?? But I don't have that information specifically.

Metservice or NIWA for more detailed information :)

Cheers

New plymouth

Hi can you please tell me if New Plymouth wind will be strong?

Hi there - hopefully the

Hi there - hopefully the worst is well to your east - not expecting severe winds, maybe some downpours, but generally too far east to cause you serious concerns we hope.

Cheers
WW

Is the worst over in Auckland?

The weather till now appear to be pretty mild in Auckland's North Shore. Does this mean the worst has passed or has it just been delayed?

Hi there, the winds have

Hi there, the winds have missed the city, they are definitely well out to sea and aren't likely to cause any major problems. Biggest downpours in the South East (Hunua Ranges) and out in the Gulf at this stage.  Auckland City not likely to be seriously impacted in our view. Our forecast is a lot more optimistic than others today (just updated it too!)

Cheers

Closing Ak Harbour Bridge

There's talk of strong winds forcing possible closure of birdie today but the forecast has relatively modest winds across today. Your thoughts on possibility as I cross the bridge daily along with half of Auckland.

Hi there, personally I don't

Hi there, personally I don't see it happening as the worst of the winds should be east of the city, but they are clearly concerned the low may track in closer. Winds will suddenly ramp out without much warning later today, then ease back. It may not be as bad as people fear but the POTENTIAL for it to get worse is there.

Hey

Hey there supposed to be traveling from tauranga to Auckland via matamata this morning just wondering whether you think it will be sweet or not.

Hi there Best to read the

Hi there

Best to read the various articles we have put out and most importantly read the official warnings coming out of Metservice. As for road conditions check on them here:

https://www.aa.co.nz/travel/roadwatch/

The morning may be alright weather wise but late morning or midday on wards conditions may start to deteriorate quite quickly.

Tauranga Jazz Fest

Our school is scheduled o travel to the Tauranga Jazz Fest tomorrow morning and returning to Auckland on Saturday afternoon. We have delayed to a 9am start tomorrow and are contemplating cancelling our trip. We are reluctant to cancel but need to keep the safety of our students as a main priority. At this stage does it look like travelling from Auckland to Tauranga tomorrow be possible if we leave at 9.00am?

Hi thereI wouldn't go. As

Hi there

I wouldn't go. As the Transport minister is saying, "Simon Bridges is advising people to stay at home and watch TV rather than risk travelling in the storm lashing the country."

The Education Ministry has shuttered scores of schools and early childhood centres in the Bay of Plenty.

So that sort of gives you an idea that it's not really a good time to go on a trip unfortunately, especially to the BOP.

In saying that I'm a weather forecaster first and foremost and it's not for me to tell people what to do, we can tell you the expected weather conditions then you take that information and judge for yourself whether it's a good idea to go or not. Early to mid morning may, I stress MAY be ok with areas of rain and strengthening easterly winds. It's late morning that winds will become particularly strong about the exact path you intend to take, winds rising to gale or perhaps severe gale. Rain is looking to become very heavy from late morning, torrential falls possible then easing in the evening.

Flying tomorrow

HI - we are flying from Christchurch to Nadi tomorrow (thursday) - will the flight be impacted by Cyclone Cook?

School trip - is it safe?

My school is supposed to be travveling by bus to Auckland fromthe wiakato tomorrow, it hasn't been postponed but do you think it's safe for us to be travelling ?

Safest if you travel in the

Safest if you travel in the morning - rain might be about, but the worst looks to be after noon. Keep up to date with both Hamilton and Auckland forecasts in the morning and be safe in the afternoon wherever you are in Auckland :)

Torrential rain in New Lynn. Painters sheltering DUH didn't watch weather watch forecast :) Lower Delta Avenue flooded right across the road. Take care out there!

Self driving

Hi I am abit concerned abt the storm cook..I will be driving around the north..auckland to Whitianga tomorrow n then to Waitomo ..hitting Rotorua on 16 apr ..bfore goin to welington on 19. Are there any concerns of heavy rain n flood hitting these areas?

Hi there Yes definitely there

Hi there

Yes definitely there would be concerns for the Coromandel, in fact I'd recommend postponing your trip for tomorrow at the moment going by current guidance we see in weather models.

Please do keep up to date with Metservice's weather warnings.

whatipu omanawanui track

Hi, Was planning to go tramping at Whatipu on this Saturday. The forecast say 60% chance rain in Auckland. How about the whatipu beach area? And will the wind be strong on Saturday? Thanks

Hi there Showers or some rain

Hi there

Showers or some rain will be more likely in the west as that's the direction the weather will be coming from, I would put it up to 70 to 80% for the beach. The wind won't be strong but reasonably breezy from the northwest.

Hope that helps :)

WW

Precipitation Levels

Hi there, We are shooting a short documentary starting tomorrow and Thursday in East Auckland. The weather's not looking great at all but we're wondering if we need to postpone or if we could potentially withstand it if it is not too heavy? Are there any indications of mm of rain?

Hi there - Thursday is the

Hi there - Thursday is the day the ex-cyclone may start to impact our weather, so Wednesday may be ok (unless you get one of the heavy showers on you, then 30mm is possible). Thursday is not a day we suggest people are outdoors but you may find the morning isn't as bad as the afternoon - but there is a risk of severe weather in Auckland for a time on Thursday PM.

Easter Camp

Hi guy i have read a previous regarding Easter Camp as it's a few days away now do u think this cyclone will affect the Camp at Spencer Park in Christchurch?

Hi there - looks like it

Hi there - looks like it should track well east of Chch - keep an eye on the rain maps and our detailed Christchurch forecasts for the latest. The long weekend has sunny spells in it and plenty of non-severe weather too :)

Cheers and all the best!

WW

Hi. I saw you refer to "ex-

Hi. I saw you refer to "ex- cyclone" Cook in one of the answers below. What makes a cyclone a cyclone? What makes it an ex-cyclone? What makes it a tropical cyclone? Do we get cyclones in Winter in New Zealand? Sorry for all the q's, just interested as you seem to use the terms interchangeably.

Hi thereA tropical cyclone

Hi there

A tropical cyclone naturally originates from the tropics. What makes it a cyclone or not in very general terms is related to wind speeds. Go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_cyclone_scales

Scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll see at what wind speeds in that chart a tropical low can then be called a cyclone.

We don't get tropical cyclones in winter in New Zealand, we have had some fairly vicious lows in the past during winter though!

Hope that helps :)

Cheers
Aaron

Wind speeds are one way of

Wind speeds are one way of categorizing a TC. I think the inquirer above is curious about what causes a TC to form and dissipate.

Try a google search - here

Try a google search - here are some good sites:

http://blog.cyclonecenter.org/2012/10/10/how-do-tropical-cyclones-form/

http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/science-environment/2011/02/cyclones-facts-and-figures

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extratropical_cyclone

Both MetService and NIWA also have information on their websites about cyclone formations - in NZ they are always tricky as they always transition out of tropical and into extra-tropical as they move across/near NZ.

WW

Hey, thanks for the links,

Hey, thanks for the links, that is helpful. Though I'm still a little confused. I understand why you might call it an ex-tropical cyclone, but it doesn't make sense to me to call it an ex-cyclone if it is still a cyclone (just not a tropical one)?

Whakatane/Ohope - easter weekend

Hi, we plan to travel from Wellington Whakatane/Ohope at easter weekend. Looks like there is impending rain, plus a bit of uncertainty around gale force winds and possible impacts from a tropical cyclone of NW parts of the country. Is it likely this is heavy enough to excaberate the current situation - floods, road access etc? Or is it only expected to be moderate at this stage? Thanks

Hi there, with any

Hi there, with any cyclone/excyclone moving in there's always the chance it might move away at the last moment, however the latest computer models suggest Cook may make landfall in Whakatane/Ohope area in the early hours of Friday morning. The bad news is that we suggest no travel until it has passed, as flooding and road closures are possible. The good news is that it should move through fairly quickly so weather conditions may well improve fast on Friday and Saturday.

Keep up to date with our extra detailed Tauranga forecasts for some extra guidance, along with our news stories and daily weather video updates.

Easter weekend

Heading to lake waikaremoana for Easter weekend. Where's the nearest centre to take an accurate forecast from? Keep up the great work

Hi there - you may want to

Hi there - you may want to keep up with the latest as ex-Cyclone Cook (by then) will be hitting this area around Thursday and Friday with rain heavy enough to cause slips, flooding and road closures. However it improves a bit after that going into Saturday - so keep up to date with the cyclone and that should help you plan your long weekend!

EasterCamp 2017

We are camping out at Spencer Park, with over 3,500 youth, coming up and down from the whole south island. do you think it will be cancelled as I know how bad the ground conditions get. do you think this is a bad idea? looking forward to hearing back.

Hi thereI can tell you the

Hi there

I can tell you the weather but I can't tell you whether the Easter Camp will be cancelled or not, that's not my decision :D

But suffice to say the 13th to the 17th April may be too far out for me to give you much information, most I could say is the first 2 or 3 days look wet then it may dry out. But that may change a bit before the 13th comes around, it's just how I'm seeing things currently.

Feel free to come back and ask closer to the time otherwise have a good camping experience :)

Easter weekend

Hi, We are supposed to be camping Easter weekend south of auckland is this a bad idea or too early to tell? Thanks for your weather reports!

Hi there May not be good,

Hi there

May not be good, check out this story put up today: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/more-serious-tropical-trouble-potential-new-zealand-later-next-week

It's a bit far out also so conditons could change by the time next Friday comes around, may have to wait a bit longer yet to lock in on anything.

Thanks for the kind words!

WW

I have looked at various

I have looked at various weather models and have noticed the chance of a powerful looking cyclone heading south towards nz should I be concerned? I saw it hitting around the 13 of april

Hi there, take a look towards

Hi there, take a look towards the end of our Weekend Weather Video as it talks about (and shows) the possible set up for next week. At this stage this cyclone isn't likely to directly impact NZ but it may still affect our weather so one to keep an eye on, but the main focus next week looks to be on a low in the Tasman Sea.
Cheers

WW

EDIT: Correction, there are two possible tropical storms next week on top of the Tasman Sea low (so 3 lows). Yes, one of those ex-cyclones may directly impact NZ, but still too early to lock in, but yes some chances.
