Weather for March

Hi I am wanting details of weather for the 10th of March in Ashley Clinton, central Hawkes Bay. We have a wedding and I did try to look at your maps but couldn't find the information. Thanks Robbie 49

Hi there, congrats about the

Hi there, congrats about the wedding! No reliable forecaster can provide you with a weather forecast for something that far out, the furthest out is about 10 to 14 days. March is a changeable month with warm events and cold ones so it can be unpredictable. Ask us again closer to the time.

Wanganui Weather Readings

Hi Team can you tell us where the temp readings are taken in Wanganui as we are working in a timber yard with a thermometer beside our work station reading 32degrees @ 1239pm but TV always has lower readings . Cheers Team keep up the great work.

http://www.metservice.com/tow

http://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/whanganui#!/your-weather you can select the weather station type to find where the metservice one is located, its most likely at the airport as the requirement for weather stations is to be in an open area away from large structures like buildings which can alter temperature readings. Its common to get different temperature readings than those you see on TV as most people aren't located where the Metservice weather stations are. If you have a temperature gauge at home or work it will often read differently than what is reported on TV as you will be experiencing a micro-climate where the temperature is effected by buildings or vegetation or other structures which can trap warm air giving a higher reading. Also the Metservice weather stations are calibrated regularly to ensure accuracy whereas ones at home or work are unlikely to be. Cheers Matt

Hi there You are proabably

Hi there

You are proabably talking about a weather station owned by Metservice if it's a temperature reading you are seeing on TV, may have to ask them? Not sure sorry.

Has been hot lately!

Moon phase

A diagram would be more understandable as not many people understand what waxing gibbous means. Also a submit button would be less confusing than save.

Thank you for the

Thank you for the constructive feedback - definitely under consideration! It all costs us money to make changes and unlike NIWA and MetService we don't get their monumental 150 Million dollars in annual tax funding - we are a free service. Really appreciate the feedback and will see what we can do :)
Cheers
WW

cant find anywhere which

cant find anywhere which mentions the Metservice receiving $150 million of tax funding...... http://about.metservice.com/our-company/company-info/annual-reports/ unless of course you are confused about the $42,000 of Government Grants mentioned on page 26. Matt

Hi there Matt. Combined

Hi there Matt. Combined that's the funding they both get and neither break down in black and white where that tax funding goes and is used due to their own commerial needs. This isn't normal behaviour from a public forecaster. MetService gets less than NIWA but still receive over 25M a year to supply radar and observation services (extra grants to purchase and build them too) marine and national park forecasting and basic public forecasts. You may want to read the MBIE review which supports the issues we have raised over the years. We don't want them to have less funding, we simply don't want two commercial Government forecasters competing against each other and both ignoring the Commerce Commission ruling from 1997 that says any tax funded data must be open. This is why the last Government asked MBIE for an official review and that review - released in January this year - fully supported every complaint we've made and is why the new Government is taking a serious look. Also, the new Government is concerned about how much money the CEO's of our Government agencies are earning.
Thanks
WW

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the reply, I will look at that report. I agree, having Metservice and NIWA offer the same and/or similar services seems pointless. I don't understand why NIWA decided to get into that space as well. Metservice provide a service I believe is highly valuable, especially when everything they do is guided by the principal of keeping NZers safe so a cut to any funding they get would also seem pointless. cheers Matt

Hey Matt, no worries for the

Hey Matt, no worries for the reply. The National Government suddenly allowed NIWA to compete against MetService around 2013 and Senior Ministers in Parliament that signed off on it have even admitted they had no idea it was going to lead to this. We don't want MetService to have costs cut back - we've never once asked for that. But MetService believes the tax funded data is their property and not the public's - and that is where the MBIE report comes in as the Commerce Commission says the data should be "open" which means anyone can use it, not just that one commercial company. At the moment MetService owns subsidiaries (which are commercial and nothing at all to do with public services - like oil and gas clients for example) and they use this tax funded data for free and then block the private sector from using it. (which is anti-competitive). This is why the Government is now saying "hold on, that doesn't seem right". The MBIE report agrees. Our ideal set up would be for MetService to simply draw a line between the public stuff (which we agree is highly valuable) and their aggressive commercial sales teams which operate in the same space as the private sector. Every other western nation has achieved this without shrinking the funding of their public forecaster and they all achieved this last century - NZ is an oddity and it doesn't service the public as well, we have limited products compared to all those other nations. What we're fighting for actually increases free public services.

Incoming low combined with king tides

Hi guys Do you think there's any chance of a similar event like the one few weeks ago with the storm surge and flooding around the thames coromandel region later this week

I'd keep an eye on the

I'd keep an eye on the situation, overnight Thursday and early Friday, it may not end up being too bad up there this time but some heavy rain does cross the area at the time as a frontal system moves through. The focus of this system coming in will be more about the South Island, especially in the west and south of the Island.

Keep up to date with Metservices official watches and warnings though should you be concerned.

Hi Guy! I notice you are now

Hi Guy! I notice you are now taking temperature readings in Grafton, Auckland central. These readings are generally up to 5 degrees lower than in neighbouring Grey Lynn when published on the Grey Lynn weather station. Yesterday was a scorcher, and the temperature as read in Grafton was at 24 degrees, while in Grey Lynn it was reading 28.8. Why is this? Thanks.

Might be an issue with the

Might be an issue with the weather stations in question, perhaps one or the other or maybe even both is not calibrated and set up correctly. To get accurate readings stations need to be positioned and set up in a certain way. There generally speaking shouldn't be much difference in temperature I would have thought between those two suburbs as they are quite close.

The stations on this network are mostly run by people from home and can be a good idea to get a snapshot of whats going on, you'll see a trend where it's warmer or cooler etc. But for accurate readings to the decimal point that's where metservice's or niwa's network comes to the fore but it's a bit tied up hence the battle to free up data.

Hi there - we have 1 bug that we're stuggling to resolve, plus heavy traffic. Been with us for about a week now and we're hoping to get it fixed very soon - it's driving us nuts too! Sorry about the delays - our web traffic has grown a lot in the past 12 months and also technology updates can be hard to keep up with.

Super moon/lunar eclipse

Hi there, We are having a huge event tomorrow night between 8pm through 3am for the Super moon/Blue moon/Solar eclipse, and am wondering whether the weather conditions will be conducive for this. Looking at the forecast data I can see that it will be warm, windy, with a 25% chance of rain or less throughout that period. However I've tried looking at the maps for an indication of cloud cover, as this is the vital component. I've been unable to get these maps to give me an indication of this, so was wondering if you could advise what the cloud cover is looking like? Please tell me we will get to see the moon at some point, as we are now hearing chatter of event cancellations due to Metservice's rather more negative (surprise, surprise) view of the evening. I would hate people to cancel due to inaccurate forecasting, compared to WeatherWatch's trustworthy advice! Event will be based in the Central Auckland isthmus (not the Auckland Airport forecasting site!) Many thanks!

Hi there Have a look at this

Hi there

Have a look at this site for cloud cover: http://nz.bsch.com.au/stormcast.html?ops=gfs::::li:null:0

Using your mouse, left click on "COMPLETE CHARTS LIST" in the top left hand corner of the new zealand map area. In the box that comes out of there then find the cloud cover maps to your far right.

Once you are in those maps you'll see lots of different colour shadings representing different cloud cover levels. Using the dates and times on the left hand side, click the date / time you want to check out. When it shows 100% cloud cover on the high cloud option sometimes there can be gaps in the high cloud at times still so just be aware of that, not always but sometimes. The best bet is to start with the low cloud cover option.

So there you go, now you can find out for yourself! :)

Hope your event goes well!

Hi Hamish, the maps are updated every few hours but there are generally two main updates per day - before dawn and again early evening. Our local forecasts by TWC are updated every 15 minutes from the Watson Super Computer, but at this stage our maps are not part of that.

Otaki Beach

Sorry I meant this coming weekend - your site says its looking fine but the Metservice has it as raining all from Friday through to Waitangi Day - wondering why the big difference

If we were the same we would

If we were the same we would have no reason to exist :) You'd have to ask them why the difference, all our data suggests mainly dry with perhaps a few showers. It is a messy forecast heading towards Waitangi day - we're not really sure where the downpours will be and where the dry will dominate.  Let us know which was more accurate - we're always keen to learn and be better. The forecasts for Otaki are updated every 15 minutes using the best possible data to hand. It can always change (especially with a tropical low coming in) so keep an eye on the forecast and our rain maps too.

Humidity in Auckland

I always use your site for weather forecasts. Thanks for making it available, but I have a real problem I hope you can advise me about: I am staining outdoor furniture and directions state it must be used in under 70% humidity. Will that ever occur in Auckland (south-east area)?

Hi there - yes it should drop

Hi there - yes it should drop into the 60s today. Humidity peaks at night and mornings so you often find once the sun burns the morning cloud away the humidity levels start to drop. It will be borderline but we do expect humidity levels into the 60s today and tomorrow. Very humid on Thursday. So hopefully the next two or three days will work for you. Middle of the day/early afternoon is often the best. You actually made us realise we don't have more humidity info in our 10 day forecasts so we'll look into adding that also in our next update :)

Cheers and thanks for the support!
Philip Duncan

Thanks

WOW!!! Thanks so much!!!

Temp reading car verses online

I have an in-car thermometer that tells me the outside temperature. It is always 2 -3 degrees higher than the temperature given by the media or any that I find online. Why is this?

Could be giving you a

Could be giving you a slightly false reading, it's hard to say. The road could be heating up boosting the temperature a little? A proper temperature reading is usually taken from inside a Stevenson screen (Google it) for accurate measurements.

Super moon

Hi, what are the weather predictions for "super moon" viewing and when is it expected in our part of the world.a

36°????

At 5.02 in Hamilton..do yo mean 26? Not 36?

Was that the air temperature

Was that the air temperature or humidex?

Humidex

Hello. Just wondering what the humidex is. Side note, keep up the great work!! You guys are awesome.

Hey! The Humidex is the

Hey! The Humidex is the temperature + humidty = what it feels like. This is developed by the Canadian Government that, unlike NZ, provides open data to help the public and not just the biggest and richest corprotations that Niwa and MetService only focus on. Your taxes fund MetService and NIWA that do not provide data like this.

Cheers :)
WW

I like the update, however

I like the update, however the humidex seems to increase the temperature too much for temps below 20c - humidity doesn't seem to make it feel that much warmer. I understand it's in beta, just a suggestion :p

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the feedback. The formula was created by the Canadian Government and while scientific it is also subjective. More importantly, the data it is based on. Some personal weather stations may not be as fine tuned as we'd like. So the beta version is to basically monitor reliable sites with other ones and see where it all lies. Feels like temperatures are always a bit controversial - but we figure Canada is one of the most sensible nations on earth and they've been using the Humidex for over half a century. Appreciate the feedback and we look forward to more comments over the coming months. We'll probably switch if off again around April.

Cheers!
