Hi there. We have forecasts

Hi there. We have forecasts for Pukaki which is the nearest settlement to Mt Cook. It's not a mountain forecast but it gives you a basic foundation for general conditions in the area: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Pukaki.   We also have forecasts for nearby Lake Tekapo for double checking/more info: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Lake-Tekapo

Both Monday and Tuesday do look similar athough perhaps a slightly higher chance of isolated downpours around the South Island ranges on Monday.

Have a great time!

Saturday 9 December

Hi Weather Watch You have successfully forecast a long range prediction for our annual Life Education Charity Day at Ellerslie Racecourse What are your thoughts for Saturday 9 December?, Cheers & Thanks...we will have 320+ people on the Champagne Lawn for Lunch!

Hi there, I wish we could

Hi there, I wish we could help you but it's still too far out! Ask us again 10 to 14 days out from Dec 9 and we can give you a good rough idea :)

Cheers - and wow 320+ is a LOT of people, no wonder you want to know the forecast!!

Thanks Phil! Look forward to your prediction when you are able! Cheers

Auckland weather today

No rain here in Helensville. Can see the black clouds to the east of us.

Rain

A little rain drizzles down in New Lynn. Most welcome!

Bad weather

Hi Phil/Aaron, Our weekends in auckland have tended to be the most affected by bad weather with lows and bad fronts creeping by. I know its a long way out but anything bad potentially brewing for this saturday? I know you guys provide a free service and some of the comments below are absolutely shocking! Poor feeling of entitlement when you guys are just trying to do a good job and to be fair you stuck by your guns last week when the rest of NZ predicted rain, showers and all sorts. I remember Aaron re iterating that S/E winds dont bring rain so it will be dry. For that I want to say that there are quiet a few of us that love your work and follow you religiously so please keep at it! You guys are awesome.

Hi there - wow - what a

Hi there - wow - what a lovely message to get and it definitely more than makes up for the odd grumpy one we get! :) Thanks! Yes the SE wind flow is quite predictable, so with these lows what we're really looking for isn't the CHANCE of rain, we're looking for the actual middle of the low to reach land. Even when Cyclone Cook came in (and remember it made landfall in BOP) but despite flooding rains in Coromandel Peninsula and eastern Waikato it was almost bone dry in Auckland. So even in intense lows this set up can be a dry one - but not if the centre of the low comes in, then rain is likely. At this stage this weekend looks like a repeat (Latest news here: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/another-sub-tropical-low-weekend-what-will-it-mean-nz-2-maps) but it's worth monitoring as still 5 days out or so. There may be more blocking highs around NZ to influence this next low.

Thanks again for taking the time to write in with something supportive, we hugely appreciate it.
Kind regards
Phil, Aaron and the small team :)

Weather Mount Manganui this weekend

Could you please advise what the weather may be like at the Mount this weekend. Met service says rain on Saturday and Sunday . Where as yours is looking more favorable!

Hi there, at this stage New

Hi there, at this stage New Zealand looks to have a repeat performance with another sub-tropical low BRUSHING the upper North Island. This means 80 or 90% of the rain and wind will be out at sea, but close enough to brush you with some rain (as we saw this past Saturday). We probably won't be able to lock in with certainty until about Thursday, but at this stage it's not looking overly wet (but remains one to watch due to the fine line between wet and dry, as we just saw!).

Cheers

WW

Sat weather

Yesterday and pre days you forecasted a wet weekend Beach Haven and Auckland so I cancelled my break but now we have sunshine and warmth. Understand that weather can move very quickly but even last night between news it said wet day. Nice one AGAIN!

Get a grip buddy

Get a grip buddy

All week long the guys at WW

All week long the guys at WW were saying it was going to be very difficult to forecast...and could be wet or dry depending on a slight shift so blaming them for a decision you made is pretty crappy. Maybe try reading more than the first sentence in a report/forcast next time...

That's pretty harsh

Out of the 3 weather sites I follow YR Wunderground and weather watch. I must say that weather watch this time as it is most times was the most accurate. It's pretty easy to sit behind a keyboard and bring people down.

Hi there - every one of our

Hi there - every one of our videos this week and many of our news stories mentioned that Auckland was borderline for rain and may even have a dry weekend. Our detailed Auckland forecasts also didn't say it was going to be overly wet for most of the week for today. We can't help you with the news last night you watched and the other weather provider that said that. We suggest you look at all our sources if you really depend on the weather that much. The bigger picture can help explain uncertainty which is a very big part of forecasting.

Your taxes actually pay for/own 3 other forecast providers (MetService, Niwa and MetOcean) which you're more than welcome to use.

Kind regards and thanks for using our entirely free service.

Wintery feeling

Amazing difference in temperature this morning. Feels very autumn/winter like in Newl Lynn. It is dry with a very chilly wind. Had to water pots and sheltered garden spots last night.

That's the freshening south

That's the freshening south to south east wind flow today (and tomorrow). Does feel Autumn like acually, a bit like around Easter time!

Warms up next week :)
Cheers

Superb forecasting, Weatherwatch scores again!

Hi Philip and the Weatherwatch team - Congratulations, you have scored again! I wish more people trusted your forecasting, or even that more people are aware of it as an alternative. An outdoor activity for today north of Auckland was cancelled and now the sun is shining (watery, but it is there). Even if the sun doesn't last, cloud, wind and a little rain, as your forecast was saying all week, would be acceptable. I imagine the organisers are feeling rather frustrated about the forecasting on which their decision must have been based. Take an A+ Weatherwatch!

Hi there, wow what a lovely

Hi there, wow what a lovely message to get on a Saturday morning. Thank you very much for taking the time to write in. These set ups can be very frustrating to forecast but we've been established in Auckland for close to 20 years now so we're starting to really pick up in advance the systems that typically don't produce much (even though there may be a high potential for adverse weather). Appreciate your email - and word of mouth is the best thing you can do to help get our brand out there :) Thanks so much for your support!

Kind regards
Philip Duncan.

Sub tropical lows on weekly cycle

Am I imagining it or are these sub tropical lows hitting very early?? Normally if we get them I remember them hitting well after Xmas when things are hotter. Cant believe the upper North getting these weekend after weekend...2017 weather for Auckland has been just plain miserable. I really hope 2018 wont be a repeat - any positive news?

Hi there, no we can get

Hi there, no we can get sub-tropical lows in November as this is the start of the cyclone season so usually we start to see some life to our north. These lows are fairly weak and actually tie back into the pattern we were in back in early spring and winter. As for 2018 - yes can't lock in just yet! Stay optimistic if ya can!

Weather for Saturday

Hi, your rain maps are now showing rain over Auckland for Saturday, despite your weather video saying rain should dodge Auckland, we have our school fair from 11am to 4pm in Mt Eden....do you think it is likely we will see rain and if yes, how much!!??? Thanks

Hi there, the rain maps still

Hi there, the rain maps still are the same as from the video :) Definitely a chance of some patchy rain in Auckland but still based on this evening's maps/models we don't expect anything major. We'll have a much clearer idea on Friday about totals - with such a fine line between drizzly rain and heavy rain it's one to keep an eye on. While the %/Chance of rain may be high, the amount of rain forecast may not be. We'll have more details across Friday about this incoming low and rain chances.

Cheers!

Re

Thanks guys looks like a lot of people are keen to find out what is happening Saturday. Big ask but can you post a bit of a summary as to what to expect when in Auckland when you do find out on Friday? Thanks a lot Phil/ Aaron

Hi there - we have a story up

Hi there - we have a story up on our homepage right now about Auckland and other northern areas re: Saturday's rain risks. Rainfall totals look varied and we're not going as wet as other forecasters are but still a chance of some heavy downpours around. We'll have even clearer forecasts by dawn on Saturday (but granted that may be too late for some people trying to plan things today!). Historically set ups like this don't produce a lot of rain for Auckland city - but with such a fine line between rain and dry it's certainly harder to lock things in, in advance, much more so than usual :)

Cheers
Phil

Saturday 11th Nov

This is so important for me too. I need to find out if Auckland Central will dodge the rain as well.

Saturday

Hi team hows Saturday looking for Auckland as of now ? Every other forecast website is predicting rain, what do you guys reckon ? Cheers Thanks Sami

Hi Sami Still thinking along

Hi Sami

Still thinking along the lines our forecast for Auckland is currently. Check out Phil's latest video also as he talks about Saturday and what he thinks, re it being a fine line between it possibly being wet or totally dry.

Cheers
Aaron

Thanks Aaron, the hourly

Thanks Aaron, the hourly forecast is showing 50-70% precipitation ??

It's a model. Not saying

It's a model. Not saying showers won't happen but they typically don't happen in a southeast flow for Auckland but we'll have to see as the days come along how things are narrowing down.

Cheers
Aaron

Thanks Aaron ! Keeping my

Thanks Aaron ! Keeping my fingers crossed for a dry day !

Next weekend

Hi Phil The models are picking a sub troppo coming down next weekend. I know that is fair way out but have you got any thoughts on the timing of it? It looks potentially a bit nasty Cheers Dave

Hey Dave, it's still a bit

Hey Dave, it's still a bit too far out to work out what will happen due to the very large high around New Zealand next week. It may end up chopping and changing quite a bit so we're not really sure at this stage - also mainly focusing on the subtropical low brushing by THIS weekend! It may follow a similar track (from NW to SE). ECMWF is placing the low you're talking about slightly further east than GFS so perhaps 10 days from now either northern NZ or just NE of northern NZ. Anything could happen between now and then though! We'll probably have something about it in our news feed either Thursday or Friday.

Cheers
Phil.

Hi Minimum Temps for

Hi Minimum Temps for Middlemarch seem a bit high for now last night showed 12 it got down to 1 with snow flurries.

Hi there, thanks very much

Hi there, thanks very much for reporting this. Let us know if it continues to miss the mark. Forecast currently shows a low of 3 for tonight. Most likely the colder air came in just a little earlier than forecast last night, which can sometimes happen when the centre of a deep low moves in, can be a little tricky to work out with precision. If you see further issues don't hesitate to let us know. We are soon updating our data sources and we hope this will improve our forecasts even further.

Saturday in Auckland

Hi Whats the weather looking like for this Saturday in the Auckland airport area?

Please see our detailed

Please see our detailed Auckland forecasts which cover this area including hourly forecasts as well. Looking like SE winds and mostly dry, chance of a shower maybe.

Re

Is this confirmed team in Auckland? Love your work and you are usually the go to but Niwa and Metservice have it as torrential rain.

Saturday is currently a

Saturday is currently a southerly or southeast airflow over Auckland, it's almost like a northwest in Canterbury. Not much rain will really push through in those conditions. Might be a shower, further updates will come as Saturday ticks closer where we can refine our thoughts. Keep an eye out :)

Aaron

Awesome to hear Aaron. this

Awesome to hear Aaron. this is why we rely on you guys. Love your work! Will keep checking back.

Puhoi / Warkworth weather

Hey Phil, I know it's hard to forecast weather for the Auckland region. It's such a narrow piece of land between oceans.... We work in Puhoi / Warkworth & find that the generalised Akld forecast is often wrong for us. To be specific - we are often re-roofing houses & need to be reasonably certain about what to expect BEFORE removing someone's roof. We rely on good forecasting or otherwise need to call on our insurance when our customer's house & belongings get dowsed! Is there a forecast for north of AKLD rather than just for AKLD city? It's too broad a region & often the fronts slip below the northern region to the Waikato meaning that the AKLD forecast is rendered useless. Thanks for the great job you do & for the enthusiam you do it with. I like the weather too & work in it every day. If possible it would be really good to be able to get a North Auckland forecast? Many thanks for your great works - keep it up. Simon Straka

Hi Simon, thanks very much

Hi Simon, thanks very much for your message and question. Apprecaite the support too - we all do! :) As for Auckland forecasts, we're the only New Zealand based forecaster to provide specifical localised forecasts. In fact we have plans to improve this in the near future so that it is even more localised. If you use the Automatically Find my Location function on our homepage (in the forecast map area), or in our free App, it will create a forecast for that specific area. In the near future we'll be working with IBM (WeatherWatch.co.nz is now and official partner of IBM) to have forecasts that are specific to your location, to within 500 metres. Exceptionally targetting forecasting. So right now my advice is look at our WeatherWatch general Auckland forecasts and use the localised forecast for where you are and really focus on things like the chance of rain across each hour. (Oh and the "today" portion will still appear in the regional forecast at the top - meaning in time you may not need to check Auckland city, and just can use your local automated forecast).

Hope that helps!
Kind regards
Philip Duncan

P.S. We also have commercial services, as low as $500 a month. We're also working with IBM to create more data that is cheap to buy and helpful for people just like you for just when you need it (and much cheaper than $500). All a work in progress - and a bit tough in a market where the NZ Government now owns 3 commercial forecasters - and all 3 are the largest too.

Low vs high

Hi Phil/Aaron in regards to the below when will you have a better idea if the low is going to hit/miss?

G'day there Probably 2 or 3

G'day there

Probably 2 or 3 days out we'll start to have a good idea, currently it wants to just miss the North Island and skip down offshore to the southeast but we'll see how the next few days look :)

Aaron

Auckland Weather - 10&11 November

Hi Team, Metservice are predicting some nasty weather this coming Friday and Saturday. Looks like a tropical storm coming down from the islands...your thoughts? Thanks

Hi there - take a look at our

Hi there - take a look at our latest weather video (will be up before lunch) as we talk about this "battle of air pressure systems" between the big dry incoming high and the potential sub-tropical low. The low may miss us completely - or directly hit. The video today explains the set up :)
Cheers

wind

I was wanting too know when was the last time we had Easterlies? The weather seems to be pretty simple to read, the fronts keep coming from Australia circling in an anti-clockwise direction towards New Zealand and then they dump rain and start blowing Westerlies and North-Westerlies. The weather I like is balmy, sunny and a light rain. It's not so nice having downpours and El-Nina burning my skin, when I just want to sit down on the beach and look at the water maybe look for fish and have a look at the trees that inhabit the shoreline. Then look at the sand and see if there's any shells around that are nice enough to pick up and maybe make a sand castle with the family. And then I like to lay down my towel and take my shirt off and test the water too see if it's warm enough to swim in and if it is I go in and have a swim around. One beach that's quite nice is Oneroa beach on Waiheke Island where when you walk out into the water there is all these starfish underfeet and you can walk on them and it feels like they're massaging your feet! It's worth going to and Iim thinking that great Barrier island has some good beaches aswell, but I've never been there although I will get there one day. Weather prediction is good for fisherman because then they know what to expect when dealing with boating out too sea, but it can be a doomsday effect when you are told the next three days are going to be raining. Cheer up Met-service, no matter what the folk think of the reports we are ready to combat the weather anyway, with all this gear that we have like raincoats, gumboots, ski-boots, thermals and Hawaii Tropic sunscreen! Have a good and nice day.

Hi there - thanks for this!

Hi there - thanks for this! Spring tends to favour a LOT of westerly quarter winds so easterlies aren't so common here now unless we have a strong La Nina (which we don't - we're in a 'neutral' season). This coming weekend a sub-tropical low may produce a SE wind flow over parts of the upper North Island. Usually easterlies become more frequent in summer in the north of NZ - and with the cyclone season now underway we'll probably get a few more lows from the north (not cyclones, just lows) which may help fuel more easterlies.
Have a great summer!
Cheers
