Weekend weather

Hi guys, looking at Mangawhai over this weekend, what should we expect rain wise?

It's a tough forecast with

It's a tough forecast with high humidity and heavy rain just offshore, yet a chance of sunny and cloudy spells on land. A forecast to keep an eye on as it might change, but for not the weekend looks (hopefully) mostly dry. But there is a disclaimer that the rainband out at sea (closer to Northland) could drift back over land without much notice. Keep an eye on the hourly forecast we have for Managawhai, in particular the hourly % of rain.

Cheers

Please say Sun ;)

Hey Guys, Whats the weather forecast likely to be like next week in Waihi area? Hoping this rain will clear out for a bit so we can enjoy the beach??? Cheers :)

Keep an eye on our Tauranga

Keep an eye on our Tauranga forecasts, they will be very similar if not the same as what Waihi can expect.

http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/tauranga

Generally speaking there could be areas of rain in the first half of the week then it msy dry out with more sun on Thursday and Friday. But it's all a we while away and things could change. Keep an eye on the forecasts above :)

yet again January is garbage..

Unreal how bad weather Auckland is now in January - out of the first 3 weeks nearly 2 of them will be cloud and wind + showers...apparently right in the middle of "summer" Warm sure - but windy as hell and cloudy...it seems summer is starting later and later - is there any data on this or just 2 fickle summers in a row?

youre right

Get out of Auckland,I have done that a couple of times in January, the lower North Island has had wonderful weather, none of the high winds or the endless cloudy humid nights either but clear sunny days.

What a load of bollocks.

What a load of bollocks. Apart from the storm at the beginning of the year, we have predominantly had sunny hot weather. Looks like a few cloudy windy days now, but nothing as bad as you make out. You mention summer starting later ....have you already forgotten how sunny and hot December was? What did you call that if not Summer? Jeez!

Hi there, welcome to living

Hi there, welcome to living on two islands in the South Pacific and half in the roaring 40s! Our weather is always dictated by just the local weather patterns and all it takes is for a high pressure system to move away and we're very vulnerable to weather like this. Sadly weather data in NZ is a bit of a joke as Government agencies collect it differently (MetService and NIWA) and both make news headlines for various temperatures at various sites. It's why the NZ Government is now formally looking into data and why these public agencies are more focused on making big headlines rather than just providing clean open data that we can all check in on.

Castlepoint

We are at Castlepoint for the next week and 3 days from today 15th Jan. Our family is considering joining us. I check your site constantly. The weather seems to change so dramatically every time I look. Will we ever actually see a fine day?? Also trying to plan when to break down the tent.

Hi there, what a lovely spot

Hi there, what a lovely spot by the way! Thanks for the question and yes the forecast is certainly a bit messy! Tuesday is a good one - hot and mainly dry. Wednesday also looks fairly OK. But Thursday and Friday may have both wind and rain before improving fast to a hot, sunny, Saturday (unsure if that helps you!).

Details here for Castlepoint, specifically - as one our 1500 forecast locations.

http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Castlepoint - you have hourly forecasts here which can be helpful when you're dealing with timing for rain (more accurate on the day itself too quite often).

Happy New Year and hope you have a fantastic few days (Bring Monopoly!!)

Weather forecast prediction

One would wonder with the new technology you could get it right for once. Days of old forecasters were more accurate. And lets NOT say it is because of climate change

Show some gratitude

Why don’t you start your own channel and get t right instead of being a pompous arrogant Pr**k. Easy to be a keyboard warrior but phil and Aaron get it right more than you can count up to. Take your negativity elsewhere.

Hi there, thanks for your

Hi there, thanks for your complaint "anonymous". Here's hoping you send your compaint also to NIWA and MetService - as we are 100% free to you, but your taxes pay for them. Assuming because you use us, you're even less impressed with the ones you actually pay for.

Kind regards,

Rangitoto walk

We're walking from Rangitoto to the causeway/Motutapu on either Tuesday or Thursday – given that rain is forecast for Wednesday. I understand that Tuesday is windy and Thursday less so, but with more chance of a shower. Which day is your best pick? Michael Smith

Hi there May want to check

Hi there

May want to check out Wednesday again, that heavy rain is now not due till Thursday. Either Tuesday or Wednesday has similar weather, cloudy areas with a light shower or two possible, winds breezy from the northeast, fresh at times. Conditions will be humid and warm with high's in the mid twenties.

You can track the rain yourself here if you like: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

Hope that helps!

Auckland summer overnight lows

Hi there, I feel like over the last 2 months Auckland's overnight temps have been warmer than average. I understand that the monopolised nature of weather data in New Zealand makes this difficult, but I feel like every summer Auckland overnight temperatures hover around 16 to 20cm whereas the 'official' data from NIWA etc shoes this peaking at 15.8c in February. So, my question is, do you think this is due to incorrect long run averages (under-reading by several degrees, potential cooler weather station placement etc), or a warmer than average summer? Auckland is certainly living up to it's subtropical billing this summer. Cheers!

Hi there, a great question

Hi there, a great question and not sure if we can clearly answer it. Averages in New Zealand are hard to work out as both NIWA and MetService only have a handful of stations that are public. NIWA has sometimes said Auckland has broken temperature records while MetService didn't agree (as they use different data and sites). This is why we want one public data source for all to use and query. But you're quite right about Auckland being sub-tropical lately. This year we have definitely had an uptick in northerly and north easterly airflows (much more so than last summer). This brings in much higher overnight temperatures and makes the daytime ones feel much warmer too. February is usually when we have our peak heat though, but being two islands in a part of the world with very changeable weather you just never know how the pattern in February may go. No signs of immediate cooling down though - the mugginess is here to stay for a while yet.

Kind regards

20th of January 2018 - Napier forecast

Hi there I am having a large gathering at my home in Napier this coming Saturday. Metservice says rain; Weatherwatch says "partly cloudy"... Which one should I rely on? Thanks Karen

Hi there In this case I'm not

Hi there

In this case I'm not sure it's that straight forward. Generally speaking I'm seeing mainly dry conditions for a good portion of the day, hot too. Just later in the afternoon / evening there comes the risk of a few isolated showers.

Keep an eye on these maps if you like, you can scroll through the day in question and see if there are any shower possibilities for napier: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

Hope the helps.

Auckland please

A very messy set up this

A very messy set up this weekend with a lot of humid, cloudy, sub-tropical air around northern NZ. Keep an eye on our detailed Auckland forecasts (which have hourly forecasts for you to look at across Saturday) - at this stage the day looks fairly cloudy, quite humid with drizzle and even the chance of heavier showers in the mix. A forecast that might change a bit as we head into Saturday but muggy weather looks likely.

Windy Dunedin.

Hello WW Team I really need your help here. We have had winds, winds and windy winds in Dunedin since before Christmas. Will there be an end to it before summer dies? Or is Dunedin really the wind capital of New Zealand??? Sorry Wellington but I think we deserve that title. Past 3 days saw 30+ kph winds at times. My allergies are going nuts BTW. Cheers and keep up your usual good work, guys. FS&Cat

Will there be an end? How

Will there be an end? How long is a piece of string? It just depends on the type of weather set ups that are moving through. Summer is typical for having fresh east to northeasterly winds about eastern coastal parts of the South Island, some summers more then others. May have to just go with it :)

Thanks for writing in!

meremere

Do you get your forecast from Accuweather ( as installed on most android phones) or do they get it from you? One of you has decided that Meremere is in Taranaki instead of North Waikato and it is screwing up a whole lot of people. There is an international motorsport venue at Drag Way Meremere, ( North Waikato) between Huntly and Pokeno which is weather reliant to run some of it's activities.People come from all over New Zealand to race there, but when they use their phone to check the weather it is telling them about Taranaki weather which is often too wet to race . This leads to less competitors, less spectators , loss of revenue and wasted money for those who competitors who miss out on points for national series because they didn't show up due to a bad weather forecast. It skews the season results and reduces participation in future events and racing series. I am asking you to correct this anomally...90% of Kiwis who know of Meremere would be thinking of the North Waikato village, power station district or Drag racing venue. ( There are also five other motorsport tracks at the venue. ) All affected by this innacuracy. The Meremere which you forecast for is a very small road and Pa in South Taranaki which nobody I know has ever heard of.

Hi there, not sure why we

Hi there, not sure why we don't have Meremere in Waikato, but we will be including it soon! Our data does not come from AccuWeather, we work with IBM/The Weather Company which supplies data to Apple and Google. However our current agreement is actually with Wunderground which is now becoming a bit dated and this is a clear example of some of the minor bugs they have. For those using "automatically find your location" they will get the local Meremere forecast in North Waikato if in the area, but yes if searching elsewhere for 'Meremere' it does appear to be a bug directing them to the Taranaki forecast. Our new partnership with IBM will address this issue in the next month or so. It's a major nationwide upgrade we're doing. We have 1500 forecast locations to manage right now, soon we're increasing that even further. By the way, the two Government forecasters your taxes fund provide no forecast for Meremere.

Apologies for the bug. In the meantime Pokeno will be the best location to promote.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention - and look forward to the fix in the near future.
Kind regards

Weather february

Hi we are travelling to NZ at the end of january for 4 weeks. We are staying in Auckland, Bay of Islands and Nelson. Could you please let me know what the weather is going to be like. The forecast at the moment says that it is rain +++. Is it going to rain most of february? Kind Regards

Hi there Sorry, not sure what

Hi there

Sorry, not sure what will happen in February at this stage. It's a bit too far into the future.

Come back and ask us 7 days out from your trip and maybe we'll have a better idea of what is coming?

We mostly deal with the next 5 to 6 days, beyond that forecasts can start to chop and change a fair bit. At times they can be consistent and pull through, just depends.

Hawke's Bay! While Tuesday night and Wednesday AM won't be great, the rest of the week looks the best in the North Island around then :)

Forcast vs rain radar maps

Hi There Heading to tawhranui Peninsula near Omaha on Monday for 6 nights. Hoping you can walk me through the basics of reading the weather!?!? Can you help me understand the 10 day forcast versus the 10 day rain radar maps. The day by day forcast and the text descriptions are showing differently to the rain radar - eg doesn't look like any wet weather from Thursday. However the forcast says showers still on Thurs and Sat. Am I reading the rain radar incorrectly? Had assumed if no colour then that means a dry sky? Pink reads as showers? Appreciate your wisdom !

H there, yes it can be a

H there, yes it can be a little tricky pairing them up (as they don't always go hand in hand). Keep an eye on the % chance of rain for the area you're specifically heading to. Monday looks mostly dry but a front on late Tuesday / early Wednesday sees some heavy rain - then generally it improves again. Shower risks in coastal areas like Omaha can be VERY tricky to forecast with coastal winds shifting where those showers can be. We can often be on the borderline for showers at the time of the year - so that's why the maps and forecasts may not match up. Our advice is to focus on the % of rain each day (and hourly where it matters) as anything over 60% is a fairly high chance of some wet weather. The weather icons sometimes will show a RAIN cloud but the % of rain tells you if it's a high chance of rain. The weather maps then can give you some understanding as to where the main area of rain is how close you are to this. Also keep an eye on our detailed Auckland forecast that we write here at WeatherWatch.co.nz as it somewhat applies to Omaha area too. Hopefully you will be covered with that info - but feel free to always ask again closer to the time :)

Cheers

probable weather cycle?

Hello, I'm a farmer from the South Otago region (Balclutha Area) and we have received below average rainfall since July 20th. How long do you anticipate lasting, we are starting to get desperate. Thanks and kind regards, G. Hunter ps, we seem to be getting big cyclones to the south-east of the country which is moving the rain north missing us.

Hi there, thanks for your

Hi there, thanks for your message and question. The news isn't great in the short term - but there is SOME rain coming. The general trend if for drier than average weather for the next 7 days, however next week there's a chance of two cold fronts coming in to Southland. Take a look here at our latest forecast for next week which breaks down what is happening each day. You'll be into the low 30sC on Monday though - hot and dry weekend coming up. Overall the map at the bottom suggests the dry trend continues - but these fronts can sometimes deliver a good downpour - but no major change in the pattern for you just yet.
