Cyclones

Who chooses the names of cyclones? I know they are alphabetical during a season, but can we submit a name for consideration?

Hi there, in our part of the

Hi there, in our part of the world it's a little confusing as we have three cyclone authorities (instead of just one for all of North and Central America for example). If you draw a line north and south halfway down the Tasman Sea storms that form west of it (160E) are named by Australian authorities and east of it named by Fiji. Unsure about if you can submit names sorry, but you can read all about it here:

Good Morning, A few days ago

Good Morning, A few days ago you were talking about a large high moving in over the country, including the North Island. What has happened to that? All you talk about now is rain, and a possible cyclone. Looking at your forecast, there is rain forecast to some degree, for every single day until the 20th Feb now. If that eventuates, that would surely make this February the wettest on record? Are there no highs forming that could move on to the country?

Good morning :) The high is

Good morning :) The high is still coming in and while it's quite large it's also quite weak - rain clouds draped narrowly over the North Island affecting some people and nothing to really push it away. The South Island will benefit most from this high, in fact sunny weather with daytime temps up to 30 degrees possible for some areas this week. But the tropical air feeding in is definitely the culprit for the rain in the north. As for the cyclone, it's actually tracking north of this higher pressure over NZ and lying out to our east. Should be another high (a bigger one) next week after the remnants of Gita have moved through (probably one week from now). Not sure about records yet, still more than half the month to get through.
Kind regards
WW

Map for Wednesday shows the high pressure belt over NZ and to our north east - cyclone well to the north (tracking westwards) north of the high.

Why does the weather company

Why does the weather company have a radical variance between what the rain maps are saying and what they say? For next Saturday it said before clear now it's saying rain and the maps are showing its clear. I think the weather company just likes to put rain and showers on the forecasts to annoy people. I for one am not a fan of them myself I believe the rain maps over anything they say. Are their forecasts not moderated?

Hi there, the Weather Company

Hi there, the Weather Company relies on data that uses many more sources than just the weather maps (which is one source from the US Government). Rather than focus on the weather icons, focus on the % (percentage) of rain in their long range forecasts - there's no forecaster on earth that has high accuracy for long range and next weekend Cyclone Gita is likely to be near the NZ area which is why there is even more uncertainty. Their forecasts are in fact moderated and worked on by meteorologists who are specifically working now to make them even more accurate for us - and we have plans to improve the icons (which are too clunky and don't often reflect the forecast so well - that's a work in progress by our small team to improve that). So once again, focus on the % of rain for long range forecasts as that's the most reliable indicator for rain or dry. Their data has been independently tested and is proven to be more accurate than the NZ Government forecasts you pay for via tax funding - we are providing a free service. Feel free to shop around.

Rain for Sunday in Orewa

Hi, I'm going to be running the Orewa Beach Half Marathon on Sunday. It's obviously going to be a very wet day, but can you tell if the heavy falls are likely to be in the morning or afternoon? Thanks!

HI there, it's a hard one to

HI there, it's a hard one to answer as the rain comes and goes but the latest modelling suggests it will get heavier during the day/into the afternoon. Keep an eye on the rain maps as they are updated every few hours. All the best for Sunday!

Rain on the Kapiti Coast

Hello, Kapiti Coast seems to have missed out on many of the "heavy" rain forecasts for some time, except for the storm last Thursday. It has not rained here now for three months, apart from the odd day here and there. Any explanation why the rain is not falling here? Thank you

Hi there, yes you've been in

Hi there, yes you've been in a bit of a shadow for the big rain. Too far south to get the northern downpours and during Fehi the rain bands again missed your area (from South Taranaki to Kapiti) - this was mostly due to the South Island ranges getting in the way. It's really just been bad luck. It looks a little more positive for you in the coming days, so fingers crossed!

Re/ the live observations map.

Hi team.Do you have any idea when the PWS live observations map will be corrected. It would be nice to see it make sense.Cheers

HI there, we are upgrading

HI there, we are upgrading the PWS live obs page in the near future as we continue to migrate over to IBM's new Weather Company. This is an expense for us so is taking time. In the meantime we're displaying the WU network which is very handy but has about 10% of weather stations that aren't too reliable (so always pays to look at surrounding stations to get a good idea). We're also looking forward to the New Zealand Government making the weather stations we all collectively fund at NIWA and MetService open and available at some point time - NZ is the only country in the western world to delay this data for people to use simply for the commercial profits of Government Agencies.

Saturday

Hey guys any chance of playing a cricket game in Auckland tomorrow?

At this stage probably not

At this stage probably not however there is certainly a chance things could dry out for a time in some areas (especially eastern areas). A fine line between heavy sub-tropical rain and just drizzle and dry spells. A very hard forecast to perfectly nail due to this fine line. That's probably not a helpful reply!

Are they nervous?

Hi team, I've just read the following in an article contained in the NZ Herald: ".....After media reports referencing Weather Watch, a private weather forecaster, MetService said it was important that the public understood that MetService was the official national weather service. MetService meteorologist Lisa Murray said it was vital that knew "who to listen to" and trust......" We do. That's why we listen to you and not them. I don't think they've had a daily forecast right this year yet! Keep on doing what you all do so well and that is showing MetService how real weather forecasting is done. Cheers, Lee.

Hi Lee, thank you for kind

Hi Lee, thank you for kind comments. We always get attacked by them for advanced stories and they never credit us ever when we are right. We wrote the story today due to demand from the public including Government Agencies. MetService is a COMMERCIAL agency, not a public department. They see us as a competitor. We, however, see them as our big brother - instead they behave like a bit of a bully time and time again for their own commercial gains. It's why MBIE has provided an official review to the Government saying the NZ set up is the worst in the world due to this commercial focus.

We're not perfect, we make mistakes - but we're in the private sector and it's wrong for a Government agency in a free society to attack us this way. In fact we always say during storms to keep up with MetService warnings also. We're very pleased that just this afternoon Minister Woods' Office has invited us to meet with them face to face at the Beehive to discuss the issues with the current weather industry set up.

Kind regards
Philip DUncan

Keep up the awesome work Weatherwatch

I'm sure Metservice could explain why they forecast over 50 thunderstorms a year in Auckland, and we only get half a dozen. But they wont, because they enjoy the click bait from all of the headlines they get. They are a pretty average forecaster and feel attacked as Weatherwatch get the forecasts accurate, and are reliable. Hope you guys enjoyed the free media coverage! :)

To be fair Phil, I see you

To be fair Phil, I see you bad mouthing them on twitter all the time, whereas they just talk about the weather on social media. I've never seen an attack there once! Also, I read that report, and I'm not quite sure you are interpreting it correctly. It did say there were limitations with the way our weather services are currently set up, but it also said that MetService provides all the data they are required to provide, and they operate within and comply with the parameters they have been set by the government. Essentially, to my mind, the report said that if the current model were to be changed, it would be up to the government, and it would be a massive overhaul of the whole system, rather than them just telling MetService to 'get in line' The report also said that misinformation about how MetService is currently funded and what data should be open source is perpetuated by certain private weather forecasters. It didn't say who, though. Do you know who that was in reference to?

That's your opinion which

Hi "Anonymous"

That's your opinion which you're welcome to. If you have further questions contact MBIE.

how odd

Just spent a bit of time reading through that report (very interesting read), can find no mention of the 'misinformation' mentioned in that comment not anything else that has the same implications. From a joe blogs perspective, and from a citizen who looks at a few providers of weather info (Metservice, NIWA, Weather watch & Metvuw), I think the comments Weather watch make are valid and not personal attacks against either NIWA or Metservice, but rather highlighting issues with the current system setup and they always refer to either agency for weather warnings etc. It seems yesterday that someone at Metservice woke up on the wrong side of the bed and decided to do something similar to what a male lion would do to deter a male competitor. When I read that article... head in hands moment. Anyway my 2 cents. Keep up the good work! Will be interesting to see how the next few weeks shape up.

Grrrr

They ALWAYS get the damn weather wrong and you guys don't - this annoys me!!!! https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/101261982/cyclone-potential-but-fearmongering-impacts-public-trust-in-weather-services

Coromandel weather

Hi Team, Firstly, just wanted to say what a great job you do on this site, very informative. I am due to take the family away to Coromandel town for a few days holiday between Sat 17th and Wed 21st Feb, the weather next week looks rainy but is there any sign of this clearing up for the following week? I am hoping there is a high pressure system on the way :-) Cheers,

Hi there With the way the

Hi there

With the way the weather is at the moment I wouldn't like to say too much as those dates are a fair way out, at the moment the tropics seem quite active and there is even the potential for ex tropical cyclones comes down onto the upper North Island around mid February. It could all clear by the time your holiday comes around but still it's a bit hard for me to say that right now. Maybe if you come back and ask 5 to 6 days out things may have narrowed down a tad more?

If we don't hear back from you have a great holiday anyway, thanks for writing in!

Next week

Hi Phil I don't like what is coming next week! If the models are correct it looks very ugly for the North Island especially. It probably needs another day or two to be sure but any cyclone approaching from that direction basically cannot miss the North Island. No doubt you will be covering it in the next few days Cheers Dave

Hey Dave - yes we're well

Hey Dave - yes we're well aware of a likely tropical cyclone next week but the modelling isn't on the same page about this one and where it will track. Either way it looks like a significant storm though! But too much conflicting data to really be detailed about it just yet and if it will even reach New Zealand. I do mention it in my weather video later this morning too, but we're just waiting another day or so to get more confident with the data.

Cheers

Saturday 10th Feb

Hi I have planned a BBQ on Saturday in Gulf Harbour, Whangaparoa. the forecast has changed daily from 40% chance of rain, up to 90% back to 70%. What are my chances of a rain free afternoon?? I can handle the odd shower :o) Thanks Kelly

Hi Kelly, there is a tropical

Hi Kelly, there is a tropical low moving in this weekend bringing periods of rain to northern New Zealand. Once you get above that 70% mark it tends to indicate rain at times (but sometimes the front can break up a bit with dry spells). It's a bit of a complicated set up this time around but it does appear to be a wet day - however the reason why the % of rain is fluctuating a bit is because the bulk of the rain looks to be just west of Auckland with an easterly blowing through (helping to push it west). There's a fairly fine line between dry weather and wet weather once you get to your area so keep checking the forecasts as each day it's being fine tuned. Sorry we can't be any more specific than that just yet!

Auckland this Saturday

Hey guys Whats the weather looking like for Saturday? Are we now looking at a direct hit from the low coming in or is there a chance it will blow off the country a bit? If it does hit are we looking at non-stop rainfall all day? Praying for good weather :) Thanks

It's not a very straightforward set up as the low is fairly weak - but has plenty of rain around it.

Summer

It feels like summer has finished?!

Depends where you are, got to

Depends where you are, got to 24 in Auckland today which is pretty good.

There has been a cool spell recently but that's fine and normal, will be warmer weather on the board again soon however tropical lows may mean it's looking a bit wet.

Long range forecast for mid to late Feb

Hi WW team, Given the forecast for this week in Auckland is pretty much rain from Thursday and into next week, does the long range forecast show any chance of the sunny weather returning from mid Feb? Cheers Dale

Hi Dale, yes we have a couple

Hi Dale, yes we have a couple of tropical lows to deal with over the next 10 days but after that it looks like another big high will be rolling back in across the country from the Tasman Sea. Tropics very active now so may be the dominant force heading into March.

Great Big Thumbs Up

Hey. WW Team Thank you for the almost 2000 locations one can get a weather report on. It's fantastic and a huge help in planning weekend R&R. I have one question.... does it look like winter will come early in Dunedin? I've been seeing a lot of loads of fire wood being transported this weekend. Cheers and keep up the great work. You guys are remarkable. Dee

Hi Dee Was just chatting to

Hi Dee

Was just chatting to Phil about this, we see no evidence of an early winter. Just a SW flick at the moment then a return to warmer weather later this week / next week.

In saying that it will come eventually, might be cheaper to get some wood now then when winter hits?

Thanks for writing in!

Auckland weather Saturday February 10th

Hey guys Whats the weather looking like for Saturday February 10th in Auckland? The predictions keep changing on a daily basis and Metvuw, Wind guru etc aren't predicting much rain at all now. Thoughts? Thanks

Hi there, when you say the

Hi there, when you say the weather forecast keeps changing how much is the % of rain specifically changing? That's the key one to work out if we're trending towards a wetter day or a drier one.  The reason the forecasts are changing is due to a tropical low expected to brush northern New Zealand across the end of this week - not like last week's low that came to us directly, this one is swiping us from east to west. It's a tricky set up - keep focused on the % of rain. Anything above 60% means wet weather is likely but by Saturday the low may be far enough away to only generate a few showers in the Auckland region. If winds tilt ESE then Coromandel Peninsula blocks most of the wet weather - if winds swing ENE then rain can come in.

The most important piece of long range forecasting isn't the text or the weather icon - it's that percentage of rainfall + wind direction.

Cheers

WW

Hi, thanks. Yes, been

Hi, thanks. Yes, been watching the predicted rainfall. I guess the predictions are going to change a few times before then too. Is there any chance of high winds coming in last minute or do they not look that bad?

Because this low isn't

Because this low isn't currently forecast to get too deep the winds shouldn't be too major, although may become blustery from the east for a time, mostly because of the squash zone of air pressure between that low in the north pushing into much higher pressure over the South Island. It's this big high that will guide the tropical low and either stop rain from sliding too far south down Northland or allow it to move into the whole upper North Island (not the current forecast). Any tropical low can be a bit tricky - and this one may be followed by a tropical cyclone next week so there's a lot of moving parts right now. Keep an eye on the wind maps, you'll see the easterly quarter winds building as the week goes on and when they may peak. Always good to look every 12 hours or so to get a better idea as to what is happening.

Cheers

Rain forecast monday!

Hoping to go to rainbows end tomorrow! What are the chances of rain from 10-5pm???

Hi there It's not a totally

Hi there

It's not a totally straight forward day. Generally speaking a few morning showers clear then it could be sunny spells and some cloud for the rest of the day. But once again, not that straight forward, there is an area of instability forming late morning especially about southern parts of Auckland (more into the Waikato and across to the Bay Of Plenty) that could bring an isolated downpour or two late morning till mid afternoon then any should clear away as a west to southwest breeze starts to become a little more dominant. Isolated showers by nature are just that, you can get them and other times you may remain completely dry.

Hopefully that answers your question in some way. If it showers or rains, just find some cover for a bit :D

Have a great day!

Cheers
Aaron

Auckland Cold!

Hi WW! After the heat we've had lately today feels, and I hate to say it! But cold! 24 is predicted today but at 10:30am its only 17 degrees with rain, which doesn't seem to be clearing any time soon. Would it be safe to say today may not even get out of the teens? Cheers :)

Hey there! Definitely much

Hey there! Definitely much cooler now that this small low that started near Haast on the South Island's West Coast after the excyclone has just reached Auckland! It's come in a couple of hours sooner which may be the reason for the lower temperature. Some parts of Auckland may still have sunny spells today though - so 21 to 24 is still possible with peak heat not for another four or so hours. But definitely a cool down!! :) Quite refreshing :)
