If you have any questions about functionality of our website(s) or app, trying to locate maps or data, or have a simple comment/feedback - please post a comment below!

As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Have questions of a commercial nature? Contact us directly here.

Thanks for your support!

Don’t forget to check out our RuralWeather.co.nz website (great for event planning or attending + camping!) and also, our brand new Weather Alerting App!

lots of cute adorable little showers on the auckland rain radar. is low pressure causing them?

Brian on 25/03/2024 9:17pm

There is heavy rain outside and your website indicates 8% chance of trace amounts.
Statistically, many mm of heavy rain is still possible, but that’s quite misleading…

WW Forecast Team on 25/03/2024 9:44pm

Hi Brian – it’s still indicating a chance of rain (even 1% chance of rain doesn’t mean it’s light or heavy it just means showers are in the area). When you see 8% with trace amounts it means hit and miss showers. If we told you 5mm and the shower juuuust missed you, you’d be annoyed about that too. You should be more frustrated that MetService holds the keys to massively improving ALL weather forecast data in NZ, but they choose not to in order to keep radar data to themselves … this process cuts everyone out of having it (including themselves as MetService has no computer to power that data back into their own public forecasts!) and this reduces the “on the day” accuracy for everyone across NZ. Globally Government forecasters don’t hold back rain radar data for their own commercial gains. There is a second Government review in place right now about this very thing.

You’re also demanding perfection when the tech isn’t there yet. Our rain data is the most accurate in NZ (independently proven 3 times now) but it’s not perfect. Just like flying to England still takes a day to get there, even if you want to fly there in 1 hour. The tech isn’t there yet. You have to be patient and work with what we’ve got in 2024.

This article explains why most people don’t check all the variables when it comes to rain… if it matters that much to you (which it seems to) then here are the steps to get fewer nasty surprises: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/education-the-most-accurate-ways-to-read-a-rain-forecast-get-fewer-false-alarms

Hi Phillip and team,

Awesome work. Watching every videos. Enjoy a lot.
My question is, I need to paint my house. As per your modelling it was supposed to be dry today 25/03 and 26/03 here in West Auckland(Henderson). But guess what it rained in the morning and my two days off ruined.
Could you please tell me next possible dry and sunny day for my project?

Thanks

WW Forecast Team on 25/03/2024 6:51pm

Hi there, thanks very much for the kind support. At this time of year we can often get wet weather even with a low 10% chance of rain (once the nights become longer than the days then small isolated showers off the Tasman Sea can still affect Auckland. One of the reasons we’re so frustrated with MetService and the Government for so many years is that NZers must collectively tax fund rain radar, but unlike the roads we tax fund and then can drive on, we cannot use rain radar data in our forecasts … but in Aussie our data feed ingests radar data (as they have open data) and it means it’s automatically ingested into the daily forecast and makes for higher accuracy (so that 10% chance might jump to 60%). We’re working with MetService to achieve this but it’s hugely costly for us the way it’s done in NZ. In the meantime, to more directly answer your question, most days this week have a shower chance. Check the rain graphs in our new Alerting App (or at RuralWeather.co.nz as the site remains freely open for now). You can see a shower spike most days. Next week, however, looks better. There should be plenty of long dry spells in the 10 days ahead too, but if you’re paining it can be trickier.

Good luck – use our hourly data + rain radar and you shouldn’t get so many nasty surprises.

James on 21/03/2024 9:35am

Hi guys,
We have cricket on Saturday in auckland, the forecast seems to have changed from a fairly dry to to now whats looking like a wet one. What are you thoughts is there a game possible from 11-6pm?

WW Forecast Team on 21/03/2024 6:39pm

Hi James, there’s a very weak low moving in and falling apart. It’s minimal rain but keep an eye on the rain graphs in our new App or at RuralWeather as they update hourly. These borderline systems can be tricky to forecast with high accuracy but it does look quite likely to be wet for a time on Saturday with dry spells in the mix. Our latest video today will cover this in a bit more detail too.
