As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.
We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.
Have questions of a commercial nature? Contact us directly here.
Thanks for your support!
Don’t forget to check out our RuralWeather.co.nz website (great for event planning or attending + camping!) and also, our brand new Weather Alerting App!

Hey guys, I get the weather is hard to predict at the moment but it’s bloody annoying when the forecast says “Trace” amount of rain and “Partly cloudy. Breezy West to Sou’West winds.” and then it torrentially chucks it down all the way from Mt Wellington to Albany.

Be angry with the Government then – it’s Niwa and MetService who have commercialised/blocked access to tax funded radar and tax funded weather data which (as we’ve said for 15 years now) would fix that very problem.
If we were in Australia this problem wouldn’t exist as we could factor live radar data into our forecasts and live observations – neither of which MetService nor Niwa allow us to do yet without something big in return. It’s free to use in Australia, UK, Canada, USA etc. Niwa wants 1 million a year off us to display current weather observations from publicly owned weather stations.
Lobby your local MP or the Government to make change – they have their second review in place now, after entirely ignoring the last review in 2017 which said NZ weather data is expensive and hard to access or use for the good of the public.
We can only do so much as a small business – yet we’re still more accurate overall than Niwa and MetService when it comes to rain forecasting, despite the Government commercialising them both as Government Agencies to forecast weather using your taxes.
Cheers

Interesting weather in Europe at present: Temperature anomaly between the past Sunday (April 14th) and the following Sunday (April 21st), from around 15 °C too warm to more than 10 °C below average temperature.

Hi there, we’re not sure why this has happened. We’ve had another person contact us with a similar issue, where it shows some local data but then the forecasts are for a larger location close/nearby. We’re looking into it, so thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Hi there,
Is there a way to change the units of measure eg wind in knots?
Thanks

Hi Ian, no “knot” yet lol 🙂
Working on it though and hope to bring an upgrade later this year.
