how odd

Just spent a bit of time reading through that report (very interesting read), can find no mention of the 'misinformation' mentioned in that comment not anything else that has the same implications. From a joe blogs perspective, and from a citizen who looks at a few providers of weather info (Metservice, NIWA, Weather watch & Metvuw), I think the comments Weather watch make are valid and not personal attacks against either NIWA or Metservice, but rather highlighting issues with the current system setup and they always refer to either agency for weather warnings etc. It seems yesterday that someone at Metservice woke up on the wrong side of the bed and decided to do something similar to what a male lion would do to deter a male competitor. When I read that article... head in hands moment. Anyway my 2 cents. Keep up the good work! Will be interesting to see how the next few weeks shape up.

Grrrr

They ALWAYS get the damn weather wrong and you guys don't - this annoys me!!!! https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/101261982/cyclone-potential-but-fearmongering-impacts-public-trust-in-weather-services

Coromandel weather

Hi Team, Firstly, just wanted to say what a great job you do on this site, very informative. I am due to take the family away to Coromandel town for a few days holiday between Sat 17th and Wed 21st Feb, the weather next week looks rainy but is there any sign of this clearing up for the following week? I am hoping there is a high pressure system on the way :-) Cheers,

Hi there With the way the

Hi there

With the way the weather is at the moment I wouldn't like to say too much as those dates are a fair way out, at the moment the tropics seem quite active and there is even the potential for ex tropical cyclones comes down onto the upper North Island around mid February. It could all clear by the time your holiday comes around but still it's a bit hard for me to say that right now. Maybe if you come back and ask 5 to 6 days out things may have narrowed down a tad more?

If we don't hear back from you have a great holiday anyway, thanks for writing in!

Cheers

Weather for this Saturday

Hi we are driving from Whangarei to Just South of the Bombay’s , meremere drag strip are we going to have a good day?

Hi there - looks like there

Hi there - looks like there will be some rain around. Take a look at our latest weather video as it very much focuses on these areas.

Next week

Hi Phil I don't like what is coming next week! If the models are correct it looks very ugly for the North Island especially. It probably needs another day or two to be sure but any cyclone approaching from that direction basically cannot miss the North Island. No doubt you will be covering it in the next few days Cheers Dave

Hey Dave - yes we're well

Hey Dave - yes we're well aware of a likely tropical cyclone next week but the modelling isn't on the same page about this one and where it will track. Either way it looks like a significant storm though! But too much conflicting data to really be detailed about it just yet and if it will even reach New Zealand. I do mention it in my weather video later this morning too, but we're just waiting another day or so to get more confident with the data.

Cheers

Saturday 10th Feb

Hi I have planned a BBQ on Saturday in Gulf Harbour, Whangaparoa. the forecast has changed daily from 40% chance of rain, up to 90% back to 70%. What are my chances of a rain free afternoon?? I can handle the odd shower :o) Thanks Kelly

Hi Kelly, there is a tropical

Hi Kelly, there is a tropical low moving in this weekend bringing periods of rain to northern New Zealand. Once you get above that 70% mark it tends to indicate rain at times (but sometimes the front can break up a bit with dry spells). It's a bit of a complicated set up this time around but it does appear to be a wet day - however the reason why the % of rain is fluctuating a bit is because the bulk of the rain looks to be just west of Auckland with an easterly blowing through (helping to push it west). There's a fairly fine line between dry weather and wet weather once you get to your area so keep checking the forecasts as each day it's being fine tuned. Sorry we can't be any more specific than that just yet!

Auckland this Saturday

Hey guys Whats the weather looking like for Saturday? Are we now looking at a direct hit from the low coming in or is there a chance it will blow off the country a bit? If it does hit are we looking at non-stop rainfall all day? Praying for good weather :) Thanks

It's not a very straightforward set up as the low is fairly weak - but has plenty of rain around it.

Summer

It feels like summer has finished?!

Depends where you are, got to

Depends where you are, got to 24 in Auckland today which is pretty good.

There has been a cool spell recently but that's fine and normal, will be warmer weather on the board again soon however tropical lows may mean it's looking a bit wet.

Long range forecast for mid to late Feb

Hi WW team, Given the forecast for this week in Auckland is pretty much rain from Thursday and into next week, does the long range forecast show any chance of the sunny weather returning from mid Feb? Cheers Dale

Hi Dale, yes we have a couple

Hi Dale, yes we have a couple of tropical lows to deal with over the next 10 days but after that it looks like another big high will be rolling back in across the country from the Tasman Sea. Tropics very active now so may be the dominant force heading into March.

Great Big Thumbs Up

Hey. WW Team Thank you for the almost 2000 locations one can get a weather report on. It's fantastic and a huge help in planning weekend R&R. I have one question.... does it look like winter will come early in Dunedin? I've been seeing a lot of loads of fire wood being transported this weekend. Cheers and keep up the great work. You guys are remarkable. Dee

Hi Dee Was just chatting to

Hi Dee

Was just chatting to Phil about this, we see no evidence of an early winter. Just a SW flick at the moment then a return to warmer weather later this week / next week.

In saying that it will come eventually, might be cheaper to get some wood now then when winter hits?

Thanks for writing in!

Auckland weather Saturday February 10th

Hey guys Whats the weather looking like for Saturday February 10th in Auckland? The predictions keep changing on a daily basis and Metvuw, Wind guru etc aren't predicting much rain at all now. Thoughts? Thanks

Hi there, when you say the

Hi there, when you say the weather forecast keeps changing how much is the % of rain specifically changing? That's the key one to work out if we're trending towards a wetter day or a drier one.  The reason the forecasts are changing is due to a tropical low expected to brush northern New Zealand across the end of this week - not like last week's low that came to us directly, this one is swiping us from east to west. It's a tricky set up - keep focused on the % of rain. Anything above 60% means wet weather is likely but by Saturday the low may be far enough away to only generate a few showers in the Auckland region. If winds tilt ESE then Coromandel Peninsula blocks most of the wet weather - if winds swing ENE then rain can come in.

The most important piece of long range forecasting isn't the text or the weather icon - it's that percentage of rainfall + wind direction.

Cheers

WW

Hi, thanks. Yes, been

Hi, thanks. Yes, been watching the predicted rainfall. I guess the predictions are going to change a few times before then too. Is there any chance of high winds coming in last minute or do they not look that bad?

Because this low isn't

Because this low isn't currently forecast to get too deep the winds shouldn't be too major, although may become blustery from the east for a time, mostly because of the squash zone of air pressure between that low in the north pushing into much higher pressure over the South Island. It's this big high that will guide the tropical low and either stop rain from sliding too far south down Northland or allow it to move into the whole upper North Island (not the current forecast). Any tropical low can be a bit tricky - and this one may be followed by a tropical cyclone next week so there's a lot of moving parts right now. Keep an eye on the wind maps, you'll see the easterly quarter winds building as the week goes on and when they may peak. Always good to look every 12 hours or so to get a better idea as to what is happening.

Cheers

Rain forecast monday!

Hoping to go to rainbows end tomorrow! What are the chances of rain from 10-5pm???

Hi there It's not a totally

Hi there

It's not a totally straight forward day. Generally speaking a few morning showers clear then it could be sunny spells and some cloud for the rest of the day. But once again, not that straight forward, there is an area of instability forming late morning especially about southern parts of Auckland (more into the Waikato and across to the Bay Of Plenty) that could bring an isolated downpour or two late morning till mid afternoon then any should clear away as a west to southwest breeze starts to become a little more dominant. Isolated showers by nature are just that, you can get them and other times you may remain completely dry.

Hopefully that answers your question in some way. If it showers or rains, just find some cover for a bit :D

Have a great day!

Cheers

Auckland Cold!

Hi WW! After the heat we've had lately today feels, and I hate to say it! But cold! 24 is predicted today but at 10:30am its only 17 degrees with rain, which doesn't seem to be clearing any time soon. Would it be safe to say today may not even get out of the teens? Cheers :)

Hey there! Definitely much

Hey there! Definitely much cooler now that this small low that started near Haast on the South Island's West Coast after the excyclone has just reached Auckland! It's come in a couple of hours sooner which may be the reason for the lower temperature. Some parts of Auckland may still have sunny spells today though - so 21 to 24 is still possible with peak heat not for another four or so hours. But definitely a cool down!! :) Quite refreshing :)

Thanks for the quick reply

Thanks for the quick reply WW! Alright so I won't bring my Winter woolies out just yet haha! Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for your impicable service. Ben :)

No worries Ben, all part of

No worries Ben, all part of the service! :) It is cool though - we've dropped the high to 23 and you may be right about it struggling to reach that high. Today's set up is quite odd and interesting to watch (radar shows the small low quite nicely off the west coast of Auckland right now too). Have a great weekend Ben!

Not a fan of the merge with

Not a fan of the merge with the weather company looks like another rubbish version of metservice continuously saying showers and the same temperatures while not being updated. I used to rely on you guys having accurate weather forecasts not very accurate forecasts from the weather company even accuweather seems to be more accurate. Dropped the ball going with the weather company that's for sure.

rude

oh and I suppose you are a meteorologist are you? Philip is very good at what he does. He left TVNZ to follow his passions in meteorology. You clearly are making baseless claims. You are not a meteorologist. Therefore you are not in a position to judge and assume you know what is being reported is incorrect. Pull your socks up mate and move on. Noone needs your negativity

Philip isn't in charge of the

Philip isn't in charge of the IBM super computer that writes the long range forecasts not writing any baseless claims looks like your the one with the negativity the truth hurts and you seem to have been triggered I never believe any of those stupid American forecasting sites they always seem to make false misleading weather reports. The weather reports that don't change can ruin peoples outdoor plans when in fact it can come out all sunny and hot. Millions of dollars on weather equipment and it's still not correct here's looking at you accuweather.

So you want to look at

So you want to look at American forecaster (AccuWeather) but you already fund NIWA and MetService here in NZ.
All the best with AccuWeather and the fact you're actually paying for (tax funding) two weather companies you aren't even bothering to use. You make no sense. All the best.

Cheers
Philip Duncan

Hi there, just a couple

Hi there, just a couple things. Firstly we're an entirely free service, you pay for MetService in your taxes (Also Niwa, another Government forecaster). Not sure about you, but I normally complain about things I pay for rather than free things. Secondly, the The Weather Company forecasts are updated every 15 minutes from IBM's global Super Computer and have bee proven to be more accurate overall (independently by IBM) than either of the NZ Government forecasters. They aren't perfect though - no forecaster is. While the icons don't always match the forecast (something we are working on but is harder than you might think to improve) the general data (winds, temps etc) is quite reliable. Showers by nature can be hit and miss - what you want to look for is the % chance of those showers. If under 60% then there's a high chance you will have a mostly or completely dry day. The hourly data gives you risks for weather to help you better understand the set up around you - sometimes there can be an 80% chance of a shower but it hits just down the road. We're giving you more tools/data to see what the weather is doing than any other forecaster - and your taxes fund two others - we do this for you for free. The Weather Company owns Wunderground - which we used to have before this upgrade, so this is a step up from that data which we had for the previous three years. If we didn't have these extra forecasts we'd only have 6 cities in NZ with WeatherWatch written forecasts and we'd have to use MetService for the rest...that would then also limit how many people had a forecast specific to their location.
Cheers

rain

we didnt get much rain---- on thursday- need some for our garden

Foo Fighters - wet or dry??

HI guys, Firstly, thank-you for your amazing work, you are my go-to every time and you're pretty blinkin reliable!! A quick question please - heading to Foos at Mount Smart in Auckland tomorrow night - any thoughts on what the weather may be like - I have fingers crossed for no serious rain ... Thanks!

Hello there Thanks for that!

Hello there

Thanks for that! :)

Saturday night, it's a hard one, some models suggest rain hanging around in the evening while others suggest rain easing to showers late afternoon. Either way I think there will be some form of precipitation about, hopefully it will have eased to showers by the time the concert comes along as with showers you tend to get dry spells at times.

Have a good night!

Cheers
Aaron

Disparity in your and met service F/C is significant.

Hi, As a prudent mariner, I use all forecast products and my own observations to assess the likelihood of significant or dangerous weather affecting both my professional and recreational maritime activity. Your wind strength predictions seem at odds with recent Met Service warnings. You forecast a ballpark wind strength of 15 km/h whereas Met Service has issued a Gale Warning for Auckland Marine areas. Please note this is not a criticism but an observation. Kind regards, Paul w Jackson(50 years at sea!)

Hi Paul, thanks for the

Hi Paul, thanks for the feedback! The reason our brand exists is because we are different! During Cyclone Cook they also forecast that the Harbour Bridge might close with 150km/h winds - it wasn't a very windy day, as we forecast. There are many other examples of us having differing forecasts, we both make mistakes too - but it's up to the public to choose the one they find the most reliable. The Weather Company forecasts we also include amongst our own have also been independently tested and have higher accuracy than NZ Government forecasters, according to IBM. WeatherWatch (currently anyway) don't have marine forecasts either, only beach forecasts which aren't comparable to marine.

Saturday 2/02

Hi Team, What are we looking like for tomorrow in auckland. Metservice and the others have dramatically changed their forecast to show heavy rain.

Keep an eye on our hourly

Keep an eye on our hourly forecasts and take a look at Phil's latest weather video as he specifically addresses why there is some uncertainty about Auckland.

Auckland on Saturday

Sorry Phil, I dont have data at present to watch videos. Any chance of briefly just posting what to expect around Point Chev- Auckland tomorrow from a cricketing perspective?

A risk of a slow moving

A risk of a slow moving downpour(s) developing in the afternoon due to a small area of low pressure moving in (left over from ex-cyclone) - can't say where it will be specifically, looks more likely in the west and north west of the region at this stage. 50/50 in other words, cricketwise in the afternoon.

Phil

App or Website?

Hi Guys, your app and website are telling me slightly different things for the weekend in Auckland....which one do I believe? The website looks nicer with some sunny icons among it whereas the app shows just grey clouds and showers every day? Cheers guys

Hi there, have you upgraded

Hi there, have you upgraded the app to the latest version? Otherwise the reason for differing forecasts may be due to your app using your current location and the website using a fix spot. The new app should show The Weather Company forecasts for long range and no longer Wunderground. We also pushed a new update this past week due to a bug affecting some android devices.

Kind regards
WW

Saturday February 10th in Auckland

Hey guys What is the weather looking like for Saturday February 10th in Auckland? Weather seems to be changing daily at the moment. Cheers

Hi there. The 10th looks like

Hi there. The 10th looks like cloudy areas and perhaps a shower or two with east to northeasterly winds. But that is still a fair way out and anything I say now could change by then.

Cheers, Aaron

what are the chances that all

what are the chances that all of that weather that is coming in on Thursday will be gone by Saturday? Looks like the one system is going to hang over the country for a while? Surely it will rain itself out through Thursday and Friday and then move off the country?

Not sure man, it could do, it

Not sure man, it could do, it might not do. How long is a piece of string? These tropical systems are a bit hard to try and lock down as to what they'll do when looking too far out, you can get an idea that there could be inclement weather in the future for example but to try second guess its exact track and movements all starts to get a bit much.

Cheers
Aaron
