Hi there, at this stage there

Hi there, at this stage there may be a few drizzle patches in the morning and even the risk of a heavier shower during the day - but overall the forecast looks mostly dry this weekend with a higher chance of downpours on Monday.  All of next week looks dry (other than Monday's risks). Here are our Whitianga forecasts - keep an eye on the % of rain and temperartures more so than the icons (as the icons currently make it look a bit wetter than it will be - and we're addressing improving icons next year).

To day Whitianga forecast here: www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Whitianga

We manually write detailed forecasts for Tauranga too, which may also be helpful for some extra detail (while not totally the same area the set up is very similar for both this weekend and next week).www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Tauranga

Saturday 9th from 1-7pm

Thanks Phil Your more detailed hourly chance of rain information is great & changes regularly! What's your thoughts for Saturday in the Ellerslie area 1-7pm, are we likely to be on the lawns under umbrellas giving us shade, or protection from drizzle!? Cheers

Hi there Lance, still looking

Hi there Lance, still looking good. Should be dry with northerlies. :)

Masterton Weather Readings

Hi there, I heard that Masterton weather readings are taken somewhere between Masterton & Carterton which can be quite breezy. We use the Gladstone weather readings as this gives a true indication of what it’s like in town. One news said the high for Masterton for 3 Dec 17 was 28degrees, when it was way hotter than that being 32.4 degrees at 9.15am

Need rain please

East coast of South Island desperately needs rain at lots of it, when’s the next significant downpour coming to the Dunedin area?

Hi there Nothing significant

Hi there

Nothing significant in the pipeline coming up in the next couple of weeks unfortunately, just a shower or two when a few fronts are passing through. Is looking a bit dry at the moment :(

Weather for Auckland tomorrow

The useless tv1 weather forecast which is metservice based is predicting rain for tomorrow what are your predictions on your site it says sunny

misinterpreted?

The forecast I saw was 'fine apart from isolated afternoon showers near the city and south, some maybe heavy'. That's not quite the broad brushed 'rain' you mention.

Fair point anonymous "guest"

Fair point anonymous "guest" - but must point out, even that forecast was well off the mark.

Cheers

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question. Sunday has afternoon downpours forming in both Northland and Waikato (so either side of Auckland). Sea breezes are possible in Auckland, so we may see some afternoon cloud build ups but at this stage we think Auckland will remain dry, or at least mostly dry. We'll be monitoring those downpours that may pop up later in some upper North Island regions in case they drift.

Keep an eye on our hourly forecasts as well - as well as being updates for each hour across the day the forecasts are also updated hourly. Soon, through our new partnership with IBM's super computer "Watson", we'll be updating those forecasts every 15 minutes, which is a first for New Zealand.

Kind regards

Hows it looking for Ellerslie area next Saturday now? Cheers Hi Lance,

Hi Lance - at this stage

Hi Lance - at this stage looking dry with northerlies and warm. That front is looking unlikely to affect you at this stage, it looks look it will be weakening too. Our forecasts cover next Saturday now so keep an eye on the hourly chance of rain we have for then (looks good at the moment!)

Cheers Phil

Definitely raining today

Any chance you could tell me when the torrential rain will stop in Browns Bay

Looks like its stopped for

Looks like its stopped for you now yes? Must have been fairly isolated and moving through, you can see on the radar here: http://www.metservice.com/maps-radar/rain-radar/auckland

Ellerslie for HAROLD Saturday 9 December

You've been accurate for us for many years! Cheers Lance >>>>Hi there, I wish we could help you but it's still too far out! Ask us again 10 to 14 days out from Dec 9 and we can give you a good rough idea :) Cheers - and wow 320+ is a LOT of people, no wonder you want to know the forecast!! -WW

Hi Lance,Very early days but

Hi Lance,
Very early days but latest forecast looks similar to today (mostly cloudy, a few sunny spells, dry). But a rain band (the first one in about a month) is approaching New Zealand the following day. So far out it'll need to be within a week before we can be more detailed. Cheers :)
Phil.

9 December

Cheers Not looking that flash!

Rain wanted!

Hi Guys, We are now flat out irrigating our crops in Franklin. Are there any depressions offshore that might give us some decent rain , so we might get a break? Cheers

Good morning. Thanks for your

Good morning. Thanks for your update and sorry to hear it's so dry for you. Unfortunately high pressure looks set to dominate for the remainder of November. In December there may be some chances of showers but no signs of a proper front until the second week of December and that may not come as far north as Franklin. We're already hearing from others like you so next week we'll focus more on potential rain makers and what is happening right now/early Dec to hopefully give you a bit more clarity in decision making.

Cheers

Low cloud

Hi Philip, you may call it "wet air without precipitation" but I would call it damn damp. Vegetation is just as wet as if we had had drizzle. What is the cause of the fog/low clouds that makes everything so wet. Thanks Ross Oamaru

Hi there Ross, great local

Hi there Ross, great local update thanks very much. Amongst this large high over NZ we've also had a small area of sinking air pressure in the east. That coupled with a slight easterly flow and the daytime heating further inland is creating for some interesting conditions - especially as the hot weather inland draws in this more humid airflow from the sea in coastal parts of the east. We've seen a lot of fog and low cloud in the mornings and with overnight cooling and calmness all the moisture sinks and settles around the coastal areas - Dunedin had fog and low cloud all yesterday and again this morning. A drizzly calm or foggy morning on a calm day at this time of year can also be a signal of larger cloud build ups with downpours in the afternoon once the daytime heating kicks in, inland. It warms up a little more and dries out a bit further tomorrow by the looks of it where you are.
Kind regards
Philip Duncan

Weekend

Hi Team, Early I know but How are we looking in Auckland for Saturday and Sunday?

Looks pretty good to me,

Looks pretty good to me, mainly settled with anticyclonic conditions. Mostly sunny but some cloud at times especially in the afternoons. Winds are light. High's in the low to mid twenties.

Cheers

Why is it so cold in

Why is it so cold in Whangarei this spring? We had a fire going last night!! ( 18/11/ 17)

Just the way the lows are

Just the way the lows are rolling in, southeasterly airflows and Northland catches it. It should warm up soon enough as summer comes along :)

Next Monday and Tuesday in Mt Cook area

Hi. We plan to do hiking in Mt Cook next Monday or Tuesday. May I know which day is better? I noticed you said there will be afternoon downpour around south island on Tuesday. May I get more information? Thanks!

For safety it is probably

For safety it is probably best to refer to a specific forecast for a mountain area. http://www.metservice.com/mountain/aoraki-mount-cook-national-park

Provided MetService is

Provided their forecast is accurate of course...

But yes - definitely check the tax funded Government forecasts too, at MetService. Always worth checking with a state forecaster when heading into National Parks.

Hi there. We have forecasts

Hi there. We have forecasts for Pukaki which is the nearest settlement to Mt Cook. It's not a mountain forecast but it gives you a basic foundation for general conditions in the area: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Pukaki.   We also have forecasts for nearby Lake Tekapo for double checking/more info: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Lake-Tekapo

Both Monday and Tuesday do look similar athough perhaps a slightly higher chance of isolated downpours around the South Island ranges on Monday.

Have a great time!

Auckland weather today

No rain here in Helensville. Can see the black clouds to the east of us.

Rain

A little rain drizzles down in New Lynn. Most welcome!

Bad weather

Hi Phil/Aaron, Our weekends in auckland have tended to be the most affected by bad weather with lows and bad fronts creeping by. I know its a long way out but anything bad potentially brewing for this saturday? I know you guys provide a free service and some of the comments below are absolutely shocking! Poor feeling of entitlement when you guys are just trying to do a good job and to be fair you stuck by your guns last week when the rest of NZ predicted rain, showers and all sorts. I remember Aaron re iterating that S/E winds dont bring rain so it will be dry. For that I want to say that there are quiet a few of us that love your work and follow you religiously so please keep at it! You guys are awesome.

Hi there - wow - what a

Hi there - wow - what a lovely message to get and it definitely more than makes up for the odd grumpy one we get! :) Thanks! Yes the SE wind flow is quite predictable, so with these lows what we're really looking for isn't the CHANCE of rain, we're looking for the actual middle of the low to reach land. Even when Cyclone Cook came in (and remember it made landfall in BOP) but despite flooding rains in Coromandel Peninsula and eastern Waikato it was almost bone dry in Auckland. So even in intense lows this set up can be a dry one - but not if the centre of the low comes in, then rain is likely. At this stage this weekend looks like a repeat (Latest news here: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/another-sub-tropical-low-weekend-what-will-it-mean-nz-2-maps) but it's worth monitoring as still 5 days out or so. There may be more blocking highs around NZ to influence this next low.

Thanks again for taking the time to write in with something supportive, we hugely appreciate it.
Kind regards
Phil, Aaron and the small team :)

Weather Mount Manganui this weekend

Could you please advise what the weather may be like at the Mount this weekend. Met service says rain on Saturday and Sunday . Where as yours is looking more favorable!

Hi there, at this stage New

Hi there, at this stage New Zealand looks to have a repeat performance with another sub-tropical low BRUSHING the upper North Island. This means 80 or 90% of the rain and wind will be out at sea, but close enough to brush you with some rain (as we saw this past Saturday). We probably won't be able to lock in with certainty until about Thursday, but at this stage it's not looking overly wet (but remains one to watch due to the fine line between wet and dry, as we just saw!).

Cheers

WW

Sat weather

Yesterday and pre days you forecasted a wet weekend Beach Haven and Auckland so I cancelled my break but now we have sunshine and warmth. Understand that weather can move very quickly but even last night between news it said wet day. Nice one AGAIN!

Get a grip buddy

Get a grip buddy

All week long the guys at WW

All week long the guys at WW were saying it was going to be very difficult to forecast...and could be wet or dry depending on a slight shift so blaming them for a decision you made is pretty crappy. Maybe try reading more than the first sentence in a report/forcast next time...

That's pretty harsh

Out of the 3 weather sites I follow YR Wunderground and weather watch. I must say that weather watch this time as it is most times was the most accurate. It's pretty easy to sit behind a keyboard and bring people down.

Hi there - every one of our

Hi there - every one of our videos this week and many of our news stories mentioned that Auckland was borderline for rain and may even have a dry weekend. Our detailed Auckland forecasts also didn't say it was going to be overly wet for most of the week for today. We can't help you with the news last night you watched and the other weather provider that said that. We suggest you look at all our sources if you really depend on the weather that much. The bigger picture can help explain uncertainty which is a very big part of forecasting.

Your taxes actually pay for/own 3 other forecast providers (MetService, Niwa and MetOcean) which you're more than welcome to use.

Kind regards and thanks for using our entirely free service.

Wintery feeling

Amazing difference in temperature this morning. Feels very autumn/winter like in Newl Lynn. It is dry with a very chilly wind. Had to water pots and sheltered garden spots last night.

That's the freshening south

That's the freshening south to south east wind flow today (and tomorrow). Does feel Autumn like acually, a bit like around Easter time!

Warms up next week :)

Superb forecasting, Weatherwatch scores again!

Hi Philip and the Weatherwatch team - Congratulations, you have scored again! I wish more people trusted your forecasting, or even that more people are aware of it as an alternative. An outdoor activity for today north of Auckland was cancelled and now the sun is shining (watery, but it is there). Even if the sun doesn't last, cloud, wind and a little rain, as your forecast was saying all week, would be acceptable. I imagine the organisers are feeling rather frustrated about the forecasting on which their decision must have been based. Take an A+ Weatherwatch!

Hi there, wow what a lovely

Hi there, wow what a lovely message to get on a Saturday morning. Thank you very much for taking the time to write in. These set ups can be very frustrating to forecast but we've been established in Auckland for close to 20 years now so we're starting to really pick up in advance the systems that typically don't produce much (even though there may be a high potential for adverse weather). Appreciate your email - and word of mouth is the best thing you can do to help get our brand out there :) Thanks so much for your support!

Kind regards
Philip Duncan.

Sub tropical lows on weekly cycle

Am I imagining it or are these sub tropical lows hitting very early?? Normally if we get them I remember them hitting well after Xmas when things are hotter. Cant believe the upper North getting these weekend after weekend...2017 weather for Auckland has been just plain miserable. I really hope 2018 wont be a repeat - any positive news?

Hi there, no we can get

Hi there, no we can get sub-tropical lows in November as this is the start of the cyclone season so usually we start to see some life to our north. These lows are fairly weak and actually tie back into the pattern we were in back in early spring and winter. As for 2018 - yes can't lock in just yet! Stay optimistic if ya can!

Weather for Saturday

Hi, your rain maps are now showing rain over Auckland for Saturday, despite your weather video saying rain should dodge Auckland, we have our school fair from 11am to 4pm in Mt Eden....do you think it is likely we will see rain and if yes, how much!!??? Thanks
