Wednesday night’s national forecast

A ridge over the lower South Island brings clear or clearing skies tonight, getting quite cold and frosty especially inland. The West Coast of the South Island is clear, showers from about Mid Canterbury northwards affect various other parts of the country in a cold southerly airflow. Northland
Mainly clear skies, some cloud moves in overnight however bringing a few showrs mainly along the western coastline then clearing by dawn tomorrow. Southerly winds.

Auckland

Mainly clear and cold however some cloud may produce a brief shower or two
later this evening in the west any of which clear overnight, southerlies. Chance
of a light frost overnight in sheltered areas by dawn tomorrow.

Bay Of Plenty

Mainly clear this evening although some cloud does move in later bringing
the risk of a brief shower near the coast any of which clear overnight. Light
south to southwesterly winds.

Waikato & Central North Island

Some cloud this evening with the low risk of a shower, southerly winds.
Cloud breaking up overnight with conditions becoming cold. The odd shower with a
few snow flurries to 600m about southern parts of the Central North
Island.

Eastern North Island

Showers with breezy south to southwesterly winds, a risk of some small hail
at times. Snow flurries to 600m. Southern to Mid Hawkes Bay may be fairly dry for now
although showers should push in more overnight.

Taranaki

Areas of cloud with the chance of a shower (mainly for the southern half of
the region), then clearing away before midnight. Brisk southeasterly
winds.

Western North Island

Cloudy periods and the odd shower, mostly clearing away later this evening.
Southerly winds.
Tonight’s Low: 2

Wellington

Showers, some heavy at times with hail, some snow to 600m in the ranges.
Brisk southerly winds.
Tonight’s Lows: 5-6

Nelson

Mainly clear skies with southerly winds, easing overnight.
Tonight’s Low: 0

Marlborough

Clear spells and some cloud, a few wintry showers and brief snow flurries
to 500m may pass through this evening for a time. About southern Marlborough
(south of the Wairau Valley) expect showers, possibly heavy at times with hail
and snow to 400m then easing overnight. Cold southerly winds for all.

Canterbury

Showers with cold southwesterly winds, a risk of small hail at times and
snow to 400m. Areas of precipitation get more frequent and a little heaver as
one moves into North Canterbury. Areas of precipitation easing a little
overnight. Clear spells about the likes of South Canterbury with dry conditions
and colder overnight temperatures (especially inland).

West Coast

Clear skies, winds tend southeast north of Greymouth.
Tonight’s Lows: 0-2

Coastal Otago

Cloud slowly breaking away a little this evening, light winds tend
northeast overnight.
Tonight’s Low: 2-3

Central Otago

Clear skies with light winds, frosty.
Tonight’s Lows: -6- -4

Southland

Clear or becoming clear this evening, light easterlies ease. Frosty
overnight.
Tonight’s Low: -4- -3
