VIDEO: Antarctic blast peaks this weekend with snow AND sun

Filed in:

Air temperatures are about to plummet - for some it will be the second time in 24 hours, but this second polar change for the South Island will be even colder and arrives Friday night and across Saturday and tracks north quickly.

It will then push into the North Island with a blast of cold air, some snow on the ranges and the chance for snow on the Desert Road and Rimutaka Ranges for a time.

Saturday will be a cold day across the country - it’s hard to really escape it. However some regions facing north east will have sunny skies for the most part, with the mountains and ranges further south blocking a lot of the clouds.

Conditions ease on Sunday as a high starts to roll in from the Tasman Sea - in fact some areas may be quite squnny and dry (but cold) on Sunday with possible morning frosts. On Monday a high covers all of New Zealand with frosts highly likely inland across both islands.

Warmer air returns to New Zealand next week - this cold blast isn't long lasting.
