Thursday’s national forecast

A northeasterly airflow strengthens over New Zealand today with a large deep low gradually moving towards the western side of the country during the day, the low centre moves to become situated over the upper South Island overnight.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Cloudy with the odd shower, rain develops about Northland in the morning then spreads southwards late afternoon / evening before easing overnight, breezy northeasterlies change northwest. Rain may be heavy especially about the Bay Of Plenty and Waikato.
Highs: 16-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
High cloud thickens from morning about the lower North Island in the west, rain spreads southwards during the evening then easing overnight as breezy east to northeast winds change northwest. Rain may become heavy for a time about the Central North Island in the evening. Winds strongest about Taranaki.
Highs: 12-17

Eastern North Island
High cloud thickening from morning, rain develops later in the evening then clears overnight. Freshening northeasterly winds change northwest after rain clears.
Highs: 15-17

Wellington
Thick high cloud, some sun may break through at times. Rain develops later in the evening / overnight as northerlies change easterly.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson
Thick high cloud with northerlies, the odd shower or spit of rain about Nelson and the Sounds. More widespread rain develops later in the evening / overnight with a southeast change.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury
Thickening high cloud, overnight rain moves in with heavy falls possible as northeasterly winds change southeast.
Highs: 13-14

West Coast
Cloudy with the odd spit or shower, rain about Fiordland with heavy falls then easing from afternoon. Breezy northeasterly winds.
Highs: 13-15

Southland & Otago
Rain develops in the morning about Southland then eases from afternoon. Otago sees brief morning rain then mainly dry with cloudy skies. Light easterlies then freshening from the southeast later in the day.
Highs: 8-10
