Thursday’s national forecast

A front moves off the top of the South Island this morning then onto the lower North Island in the afternoon, as it moves further north later in the day it weakens. Meanwhile a strong westerly airflow lies over the rest of the South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Sunny areas and increasing cloud, some rain or a few showers later in the evening or overnight as breezy northwesterly winds change southwest.
Highs: 22-25

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Chance of a light shower or two from morning, afternoon rain then clearing in the evening. Gusty west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 19-21

Eastern North Island

Thick high cloud, a few early spots of rain then again late afternoon / evening. Winds gusty from the northwest.
Highs: 25-28

Wellington

Rain clears around midday then cloud breaks to sun in the evening, strong to gale northwesterly winds.
High: 18

Marlborough & Nelson

A few morning spots of rain or showers then cloud breaking away in the afternoon and becoming mostly sunny, gusty northwesterlies.
Highs: 22-25

Canterbury
Sunny areas and some high cloud, there may be a brief isolated shower or two Banks Peninsula southwards for a time in the afternoon otherwise mainly dry. West to northwesterly winds becoming gusty after midday.

West Coast

Early heavy rain eases about North Westland. Showers then move in during the morning about South Westland and further north in the afternoon with a chance of heavy falls, thunderstorms and hail. Gusty westerlies.
High: 16

Southland & Otago

Morning sun, showers from afternoon some heavy with thunderstorms and hail then easing overnight. Showers may not reach coastal Otago till evening. Thunderstorms more likely about Southland and less likely about Otago. Strong west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 13-18
