Thursday’s national forecast

A front works its way north over the country today, rain for the West Coast of the South Island and patchy lighter falls for the west of the North Island. Dry out east although a cold southwest change about Otago mid to late morning brings showers then moving into Canterbury afternoon and Marlborough evening.

Auckland & Northland
Becoming mostly cloudy in the morning, increasing northwesterly winds. Patchy rain from midday about Auckland then Northland in the evening becoming a little more persistent overnight.

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island

Becoming mostly cloudy in the morning, patchy rain from midday (evening
about the Bay Of Plenty). Rain a little more persistent overnight.
Highs: 12-16

Eastern North Island

High cloud thickening from morning, breezy northwesterly winds gusty about
the Wairarapa. A southerly change in the evening about the Wairarapa brings
showers then overnight further north.
Highs: 17-18

Western North Island

Mostly cloudy with patchy rain from late morning or midday, breezy
northwesterly winds change southerly overnight.
High: 16

Wellington

Cloudy with patchy rain developing in the morning, strong northwesterlies
gusting to gale force at times. Winds change southerly in the evening with
showers.
High: 16

Nelson

Rain develops early in the morning then clears midday, gusty northwesterly
winds. Chance of a few sunny spells breaking through from afternoon otherwise
mostly cloudy. Winds change southerly in the evening, further showers
overnight.

Marlborough

Cloudy with strong northwesterlies, a few spells of morning rain then
clearing afternoon. Winds change southerly in the evening, further overnight
showers.

Canterbury

Areas of high cloud and a few sunny spells with northerly winds, a
southwest change mid to late afternoon brings showers which clear overnight.
Some snow to 800m from early evening lowering to 400m at night before clearing,
some small hail possible too.

West Coast

Heavy morning rain eases to showers in the afternoon as gusty
northwesterlies change southwest. Showers clear at night.
High: 14

Coastal Otago

Sunny areas and some high cloud, a late morning southwest change brings
showers which clear later in the evening. A few snow flurries to 800m around
midday then lowering to 300m by evening before clearing, some small hail
possible too.
Highs: 14-15

Central Otago

Rain, easing to showers in the afternoon with a southwest change. Showers
clear evening. A few snow flurries to 800m from early afternoon, lowering to
400m in the evening then clearing.
High: 9

Southland

Morning rain as northwesterlies change cold southwest, rain eases to
showers afternoon then clears evening. Chance of some small hail. Some snow to
800m late morning then lowering to 300m in the evening before clearing.
High: 9
