Thursday: Intense offshore low to bring rain and cold winds to eastern North Island (+2 Maps)

Filed in:

A low off the east coast of the North Island on Thursday will see more wet weather and some windy, cooler, southerlies blowing through.

Rain and wind is most likely around Gisborne and East Cape with low daytime highs for this time of year, some areas struggling to climb above just 15 degrees with Gisborne's high on Thursday being only 16, while Napier has 18.

The remainder of today, Wednesday, will be mostly clear along the western coastline, and mostly sunny or partly cloudy for many others. Some chances of stray downpour exist over Canterbury, Marlborough and some northern eastern and central parts of the North Island.

Tomorrow the intense low pressure system will be consolidated to the east of the North Island, producing strong southerly winds to the area along eastern coastline tomorrow

Coastal areas in Gisborne and Hawke's Bay will be exposed by strong southerly around 40km/h and persistent rain. Temperatures will be significantly lower than usual in these areas. The stormy conditions will start around Thursday early morning and persist until Friday evening.
