Saturday’s national forecast

A southwesterly airflow lies over the country today, showers for the lower South Island and western regions of both islands. Eastern areas mainly dry although a southwest change moves into Canterbury this afternoon bringing showers. Bay Of Plenty also gets a few showers moving in from the west.

Auckland & Northland
Cloudy periods with brisk to strong southwesterly winds. The odd shower at times, especially afternoon then clearing in the evening.

Bay Of Plenty

Cloud increasing this morning with westerly winds, a few late morning
showers then clearing in the afternoon. Westerlies brisk to strong this
afternoon.
High: 16

Waikato & Central North Island

Periods of cloud with brisk westerlies. occasional showers during the day
clearing evening.
Highs: 12-15

Eastern North Island

Sunny areas and periods of cloud, brisk westerlies tend southwest around
midday then ease late afternoon. Chance of a shower as winds change southwest
otherwise dry.
Highs: 15-16

Western North Island

Showers from morning with brisk westerlies, winds change southwest in the
evening with showers clearing. Showers about Taranaki clear in the afternoon
with cloudy periods remaining for the rest of the day.
High: 13-14

Wellington

Cloudy periods with strong northwesterlies, chance of a shower late
morning. Winds change southerly during the afternoon with the remaining risk of
a shower otherwise dry.
High: 14

Nelson

Mostly sunny weather, brisk southwesterlies easing from afternoon.
High: 14

Marlborough

Mostly sunny weather, brisk westerlies tending southwest by midday then
easing afternoon.
High: 14

Canterbury

Sunny spells at first with breezy westerlies, winds change strong southwest
mid afternoon bringing wintry showers and possible hail. Some snow to 600m for a
time. Areas of precipitation clearing at night.

West Coast

Morning showers clearing with sunny spells then increasing, brisk
southwesterlies ease. Clear skies by evening.
High: 11

Coastal Otago

Wintry showers with small hail at times (mainly late morning onwards), a
few snow flurries to 600m at first then lowering to 400m by evening. Strong
southwesterly winds gusting to gale force about the coast for a time till mid
afternoon.
High: 8

Central Otago

Wintry showers with cold southwesterlies, small hail at times and snow to
600m lowering to 500m early afternoon then clearing. Cloud then breaking away
with southwesterlies easing in the evening.
Highs: 5-7

Southland

Wintry showers with cold southwesterlies, small hail at times and snow to
600m lowering to 400m early afternoon then clearing by evening. Skies mostly
cloudy for the remainder of the day.
High: 8
