Friday’s national forecast

A low moves over the North Island today while a ridge sits over the South Island. A front feeding into the northeast of the South Island eases during the day.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Early heavy showers with a risk of hail and thunder ease about the upper North Island then sunny spells increase, showers mostly clearing by evening. Southwesterly winds gradually freshen.
Highs: 16-17

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
A chance of low cloud or fog then breaking to some sun. A few showers develop again in the afternoon however especially inland with the chance of an isolated heavy fall as light winds tend south to southwest. Showers clear at night.
Highs: 12-15

Eastern North Island
A mix of sun and cloud, cloud builds in the afternoon with a few isolated showers developing inland about the ranges then showers becoming a little more widespread later in the evening / overnight. Light winds pick up from the southeast afternoon onwards.
Highs: 15-16

Wellington
Patchy rain, clearing in the evening. Southeasterly winds.
High: 14

Marlborough & Nelson
Morning rain eases to showers which clear overnight. Nelson sees any morning showers clear then sunny areas increase. Southeasterly winds.
Highs: 13-16

Canterbury
Cloudy areas, chance of a shower or two then clearing in the afternoon. North Canterbury sees morning rain with the chance of heavy falls, easing to showers in the afternoon then clearing later in the evening. Easterly winds.
Highs: 12-14

West Coast
Mostly sunny with some cloud at times after midday, light winds.
Highs: 17-19

Southland & Otago
A mostly sunny morning for Southland and inland Otago, a chance of early low cloud. Cloud builds a little in the afternoon. Light winds. Coastal Otago has cloudy areas for much of the day with the chance of a shower or drizzle patch, breezy east to northeast winds.
Highs: 14-17
