Friday’s national forecast

Today sees yet another front move in from the Tasman Sea, hitting the South Island from afternoon then the North Island overnight. Gusty northwesterlies ahead of the front then changing west to southwest in behind.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Sunny spells and a few showers, mainly afternoon onwards then expect overnight rain. Breezy westerly winds.
Highs: 15-18

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
The odd shower and dry spells, some sun possible. Showers more likely from afternoon then expect overnight heavy rain. Gusty west to northwesterly winds.
Highs: 10-15

Eastern North Island
Mostly sunny, high cloud increases from afternoon bringing the risk of a spot of rain spreading from the west otherwise mainly dry. Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-19

Wellington
Sunny spells, showers from evening. Northwesterly winds strengthen.
High: 13

Marlborough & Nelson
Mostly sunny about Marlborough with high cloud gradually increasing, a few late evening spots of rain. Gusty northwesterly winds from afternoon. Nelson sees cloud increase from morning, evening rain then clearing overnight.
Highs: 14-16

Canterbury
Mostly sunny with increasing high cloud, evening spots of rain with heavy rain about the high country for a time. Northwesterly winds increase becoming gusty for inland areas.
High: 16

West Coast
Showers then rain pushing northwards along the coast with heavy falls during the afternoon. Easing in the evening as freshening northwesterlies tend gusty westerly. Overnight thunderstorms may move in.
Highs: 10-12

Southland & Otago
Mostly sunny with increasing high cloud, late afternoon / evening northwest winds change southwest bringing a period of rain then clearing away.
Highs: 12-14
