Friday’s national forecast

A front moves northwards over the country today. Rain for most western regions and dry out east with high cloud. A few spots of rain may spread into western regions at times though. Strong northwesterlies in the east, especially through Cook Strait with a chance of gales.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

A few showers, rain at times about the Waikato and perhaps Bay Of Plenty. Showers / rain clearing in the evening or overnight as northerly winds change westerly. Northland is fairly dry for much of the day then expect showers later in the evening.
Highs: 20-21

Western North Island (including Central North Island)

Cloudy with the odd shower then some afternoon rain (risk heavy) which clears evening, breezy to brisk northwest winds.
Highs: 17-19

Eastern North Island

High cloud with some sun at times, there may be a spot of rain also. Late afternoon expect thickening high cloud then there is a higher risk of a few spots of rain before clearing away in the evening. Winds gusty from the north, tending northwest later in the day.
Highs: 21-22

Wellington

Areas of rain, clearing in the evening. Northwesterly winds becoming strong by midday with a risk of gales.
High: 17

Marlborough & Nelson
Cloudy with areas of rain moving in at times from the west, especially after midday then clearing late afternoon with northwesterly winds becoming strong and gusty. Some sun breaking through late afternoon also.

Highs: 19-20

Canterbury

High cloud, a few spots of rain possible late morning or around midday then clearing to a mainly sunny afternoon. During that same time (late morning / midday) rain will be heavy in the high country and spreading into the foothills. Northerlies tend gusty northwest after midday.
Highs: 19-20

West Coast

Rain with heavy falls and possible thunderstorms then easing in the afternoon as northerlies change gusty northwest. Showers clear later in the day or overnight.
Highs: 14-15

Southland & Otago

High cloud with northerly winds, rain west of the Queenstown area. Late afternoon or evening a gusty westerly change moves through, dry for most however Southland sees a few showers which then clear in the evening.
Highs: 13-15
